The ex was initially proposing that she get 100% custody and take the kids to another state. I offered her the equity in the house to anchor her down. Plus of course, cash and prizes every month for 16 years, so sadly yes, it was pretty much a bribe, just to get shared custody.
Did you really have to offer her that in order to keep shared custody, though, is what I'm wondering. You were married, so it's not like you didn't have parental rights. I know the courts generally favor the mother, but 100% custody when you weren't abusive (assuming you weren't, of course)? That doesn't make sense to me. Then again I don't have kids and have never experienced it.

Well, three months before my divorce, my neighbor got divorced by his hot young wife. The same court allowed her to take their children back to Denmark, and gave him visitation rights, should he wish to fly to Denmark. At least in the 90's, the family courts were not male friendly.

Maybe things changed in 10 years but when my brother was fighting for custody they made it very clear to the mother that she could not move out of the school district their kids were currently enrolled in.
