I believe it will allow a tanto as well, and I suspect it would have specific messaging for PUT and GET like wakizashis and katanas do. I do not have one, however. If I can track one down I'll test and update here.
And that was a quick update! It will accept a tanto, but it does not have unique PUT/GET messaging but shares with wakizashis instead.

I know they can be altered, and that includes the scabbards, but it is a complicated one and some merchants will probably not be comfortable with it. Ebon Gate is probably going to be your best bet. Which, lucky for you, is right around the corner!
