I'm afraid I don't know much about clerics but I'll throw out the usual advice for newcomers/returning players: download Lich if you have not already. Even if you're not big into using scripts the ;go2 script and the maps available are invaluable. Also you can use the lnet/prime channel to talk with just about every person playing the game at that particular moment and they are usually friendly and will help you out.

I probably phrased that badly. When it comes to helping out newbies they are usually friendly and will answer questions. Otherwise, yeah, Lnet is a cesspool of dread and despair and hostility, part of the reason I like it.

hey there
you have a few options, I wouldn't recommend aiming..
1. use a claid for your first 30 days. get 307 right away and enjoy the AS boost. if so max strength, agility and dexterity for first 30 days, then do your perfect stat build for level 100.
2. using 1700 and 302. you'll want to focus on spellcasting. drop the spell aim, triple in spells for CS. if so max wisdom and whatever else is needed for first 30 days.
bolting will be slow, imo, and too mana intensive this early.

What he said. You can't bolt with 1700 it is just too weak past rats. I also didn't like the claid options since I couldn't get my AS high enough.
I just finally today settled on the CS path for leveling and adjusted my skills/stats accordingly.
A heavy quartz orb is a must have item, you can buy them precharged to 30 uses for 25k and they give you a necessary boost to your CS to survive the low levels. Its unfortunate they don't get a duration boost at those levels and show up in the treasure more often.

I'm doing it all sorts of wrong then. I spell up, get masses and just 1700 the shit out of stuff at level 5. I'm halfling so the bolt is way stronger than CS right now.
I do the bounties I'm assigned then go fry off rats
Like the kids did in the olden days. Level 9 might be time to move to hobgoblins.

Yah the bolt is easy to get a high AS with since you can double spell aim, but the damage it produces is laughable. Jack up your CS and religion and watch 302 lay waste to stuff in 1 cast. If 1 cast doesn't finish it follow up with the CS version of 1700.

Honestly, the best route in your early trains is to abuse the free 30-days of instant skill migration, swing a two-hander, and then switch to pure caster around 15-16 trains when you can actually have mana to support 302.
All this talk about religion lore, 302 laying waste to stuff, is very unrealistic for a new player. First off, this forces you to decide on Bane or Smite as 302 does nothing to any target until you Convert. Secondly, you don't have points to both "jack up your CS" and train in Religion lore at the same time. Thirdly, you have basically no mana for this supposed domination via 302.
At right around 16 you can start to be an efficient 302 hunter with mana, and even then you'll probably need 2x in HP unless you choose COL and master it ASAP. You won't really start seeing any power to Religion lore until you can put 20+ points into the Lore.
Once you start pure hunting, my rotation was very simple. 302 twice, then 1700. 5% of the time you'll instant-kill with 302. 20% of the time 2x 302 will do the trick. The rest of the time you'll need either 2 or 3 casts of 1700 to finish "plinking" the target to death.

>stance off
inc 302
You are now in an offensive stance.
>You chant a reverent litany, clasping your hands while focusing upon the Bane spell...
Your spell is ready.
You channel at a spotted lynx.
A sickly, violet haze encompasses a spotted lynx.
CS: +87 - TD: +18 + CvA: +25 + d100: +67 == +161
Warding failed!
The violet haze furiously swirls around the lynx, striking at a spotted lynx with small flashes of plasma.
The spotted lynx is hit for 45 points of damage!
... 25 points of damage!
Muscle and blood explode from the spotted lynx's abdomen in a steaming spray!
The spotted lynx lets out a final caterwaul and dies.

The violet haze quickly swirls around the shaman, and the velocity causes large pieces of a hobgoblin shaman's skin to peel off.
The hobgoblin shaman is hit for 31 points of damage!

Skin and muscle roasted away leaving the ribs exposed on the hobgoblin shaman's back!
The hobgoblin shaman is stunned!
** Your rowan runestaff glows intensely with a cold blue light! **
... 20 points of damage!
Icy bolt to the left eye! Ouch! Ice cream headache!
The hobgoblin shaman screams up at the heavens, then collapses and dies.
The deep blue glow leaves a hobgoblin shaman.
The dim aura fades from around a hobgoblin shaman.

What level are those screen caps from? I think I have 40 CS at level 5 with 3 over level spells. Is that with an orb?

Its level 7, with the mighty quartz orb. Its what I'm hunting right at the moment. I'm also at 103, 203 and 313 for spells with 2x religion.

The advice of using a two-hander is the best for the first 30 days. A cleric will actually be a pretty bad ass two-handed weapon user up until about 30, then you start losing ground because of the single train issue. The spell aiming can be ok, but what can be done with those training points in other areas probably outweighs attempting to use bolts. First aid can be a huge bonus to a Cleric, nothing more awesome than not having to worry about finding a healer at 3 am in the morning. Clerics can make good bank skinning as well.

bolts can work, but right now you're 5. have fun with it until it isn't viable. at 10 it's going to be too mana intensive in my view, and your AS won't scale high enough vs the HP / armor of the critters you'll face. I'd fixskill to a claid around 10.
make damn sure you fix your stats around day 28 just to be safe. skills are a bit more fluid now with yearly fixskills.

Sorry for the thread hijack. Fortunately as far as stats are concerned, a cleric set for growth is already set for low level swinging. I don't change my stats for the30days any more. I've been burned too many times.
