Hey Family,

Like so many of you I came to GS just post ICE in the 90's at the invitation of a friend. He warned me that this World would turn into an addiction before I ever logged in. And it did. A day or so later I hooked my computer up to the phone to my then 9600 baud modem and set to work rolling up my first character; a ranger. I played him constantly for 2 weeks and racked up a HUGE bill and promptly lost the account. Names I remember that were big then: Dartangnan, Mendi, Winterborn, Thalior, Kree, Sagan, Blades and many others I'm sure you all could add to that list.

My first real incarnation was as a sorceress (yes, a chick) and it was funny to watch the interactions. Although I have to admit it didn't make alot of dudes happy when I finally broke the news I was a guy. Some of you might remember Xyalia. My best of friends were - Ziinntt, Valdarrow, Bronnwyn, Grimbold and a couple others. She saw the change over from AOL to the Web, double exp during the swap, many many nights of getting booted and sitting in an AOL chat room. Xyalia finally went the way of all DE sorcs that early and I retired her to a reroll and never kept up with it.

My second incarnation was as Luxian. A TWC rogue that I really enjoyed playing with my first great theme of eahnor-edged steel implements. It was a time of implementing the cmans and silent strike became one of my favorites. The Juggernaut was still running; the Ilyan Cloud took her first flight; Ebon's Gate was new. Those massively pocketed eelskin items came out along with those ridiculously deeply-pocketed pinworn yellow silk satchels. It was the first year I'd ever gotten sooo many merchant services I ran out of stuff to do and thus pay events were inaugurated. Along with that came Hot Summer Nights and many other big changes like breakage were being discussed and bemoaned. Some of my best of friends became: Amerek and Wintergreen and Menos. Menos I met while playing an Ardenai warrior Fralcon. Fralcon was my first character purchase and he wielded a fantastic eahnor katana. Eventually Fralcon got sold. And I sold Luxian after I got married in 2003.

My third great incarnation here was as Oreh. I got him from a friend after I returned to GS in 2009 and I took him from the low 40's to near cap since then. Oreh started out an elven warrior and eventually morphed into a Paladin. Paladin's were still fairly new and I just barely got into the conversion right before they were no longer available. This by far has been the best time of my GS career. Getting into the Vaalor culture and roleplay. It was also during this time I rolled up Glimfeather my Vaalor ranger. During this time I owned all of the fantastic weapons and armor I ever wanted: 6x Blink Claid, Ranger elemental Vaccum flaring bow, 10x HCP impact resistant plate, exceptional sets of enhancing stat/weapon bonus items, 10x spiked, flaring, weapon holding shield, 2x DB ring and oh so many wonderful things. My best and longest lasting friends: Menos, Nihrvanah, Rysali, Kakoon, Aize, Telare, Durgrimst, Garrett, and sooo many, many wonderful RPers that ever I found. Trully alot of fun.

Which leads me to my bittersweet goodbye. I've lost a good majority of the sight in my right eye due to a weird disease called NAION. It's made looking at a computer screen pretty tough for any period of time.

So long Gemstone! Its been a great ride.

Grace and Peace,
Matt

All the best Matt. I always appreciate people who bring more to the game than they take from it, and you are definitely one of those.

That's rough. People like you add to the world. Good luck with everything.

(Glimfeather will remain one of my favorite Vaalorians ever.)

You have been a dear friend since we started playing together a few years ago. There's not much more I can add to what we talked over earlier, but you will be dearly missed in game. I'm glad we've built a friendship outside of the GS world and will continue to keep in touch.

You are truly one of the best and kindest people I've met and played with during my time in GS. Wherever the adventure of life takes you, I wish you and your family the best. Much love bro, you'll be missed.

We didn't get to play together too much, but when we did, you were a cool dude. All the best, Matt/Oreh.

So sorry to hear about your diagnosis with NAION. It sucks, but I'm sure you are at the least glad that so far it has only affected one eye. That is something to be thankful for.

I enjoyed the interactions we had, and always took pleasure in watching you build cool stuff that was often outside the realm of what others could envision. Thank you, for being an entertaining part of Gemstone, who could always be trusted and was always polite, and a pleasure to be around. You will be missed.

Peace be with you.
