I followed the instructions on the website and was able to install everything except gtk2 and I was able to launch lich through the terminal application and it seemed to work fine. Probably coincidentally I was trying to setup a desktop shortcut to initiate lich after not running it for a few days and started to get the following error when I tried to connect using Avalon:

Pretending to be dr.simutronics.net
Listening on port 4901
Waiting for the client to connect...
Connection with the local game client is open.
error: Connection refused - connect(2) for "dr.simutronics.net" port 4901

Avalon reports this error:
I have lost the connection to the Simutronics server due to "Socket: Recv failed: Connection reset by peer". Please check your network connection. If this problem persists, please contact your ISP or file a bug report in the Help menu.

Once that error occurs I cannot connect with the server until I reset my computer (presumably because lich is still running in the background). I have tried this with the new and old versions of Avalon (both of which I have downloaded fresh versions) and have used it on two separate networks and the problem has persisted. I have also, to the best of my ability (which is fairly limited) uninstalled and reinstalled lich and all of the other components without effect.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Yeah, download (free) Virtual Box and install Windows and Stormfront.

This, coming from a stubborn mac user who used avalon/lich for a long time but found it increasingly more difficult then impossible to get it all running correctly with OS X and lich updates.

Just do it. You don't have to use it for anything else but SF and Lich.
