So... the wife and I are pondering a return, with new characters. She's intrigued by the idea of a Paladin, but it's one of the few classes I've never played. I'd been hoping to stumble across a Whirlin (tm) guide, or something similar, but haven't had much luck. Is there something out there that I'm missing? And, in lieu of that, is anyone willing to help out with a rough primer (spells/skills to aim for, avoid, generic builds, that sort of thing)?

I'm not sure how many people have used this, but it's something. This guide was intended to be for very new players

paladins are pretty simple, more a holy warrior then divine spell caster. you will focus on weapons and armor, spells are a back up till higher lvls. at 25th spell rank you can bond to your weapon giving it sancted returner and flares. there alot of fun and hard as nails.

The hardest choice to make for a Paladin is, are you going the offense is the best defense route aka Lance or big ole two handed weapon or defense is the best defense and use some of the awesome shield skills. Neither is wrong, just a choice, I like offense, so I swing a pole but a Paladin can be an awesome tank to a party with their buff spells, get them and a bard together in a party and you have a pretty potent combination.
