On Thursday, November 12th, at roughly 10am ET, we will be preforming a server upgrade for GemStone IV. During this time, the games will be taken down completely as we make the transition to the new hardware. We're estimating that this downtime will be around 4 hours (until 2pm). Please plan accordingly!

With the new servers, it should address some performance issues we've been noticing, so this is definitely a good move for us.

By "new" do they mean "new to us?" Some previously owned claptrap?

If this is the server upgrade they had been talking about before, the specs were posted in one of the HSN threads. It was some strangely high end stuff.

They mentioned it at SimuCon. Supposedly DR got theirs installed first. It's supposedly nice hardware. I don't know how much it'll improve game response. The programming language and XML output are more of a limiting factor.

Bullshit.

Supposedly nice hardware, huh? Like what hardware, do you know or just saying that you heard its good? Are we talking imflass capactors, or what?

From the simucon notes thread:

Solomon:
Server upgrades!!
Major upgrade, hopefully making things be quicker!
8 core CPU, with space for another 8 core CPU.
Starting with 1TB of ram, and space to upgrade more.
Also switching to SSD from HDD. (Mirrored/Striped/Don't know enough about this!)

There was another thread that had slightly different info.

Well the RAID sounds pointless, especially given 1TB of ram!?!

EDIT - I meant raid striping sounds pointless.

Mirror RAID is duplicating the data on two separate HDDs/SSDs. Multiple ways to stripe RAID, but you're more at risk of losing data because the data is split between drives. The hardware specs are nice, and it's great to see Simu spend the money on it. The software is a bottleneck though.

The real question is ... can it run Fallout 4?

Alastir didn't report that correctly, or misheard what was said. The server GS will be running on HAS those specs, but GS will not have those kinds of resources allocated to it, not by a long shot.

all that simucoin money going to good use

I'll admit a large solid state drive and 1tb of ram is pretty pimp. 8 processor cores is weak by comparison.

Depends entirely on workload; I expect there's a lot of caching and loading from disk (I/O bottlenecks) currently, and storing as much as possible in that nice chunk of RAM speeds up memory paging from milliseconds to nanoseconds. CPU may not be entirely important given that it's most likely not heavily multi-core optimized.

It's all about Quake 3.
