Had some bad news tonight, Simu is shutting down the Modus/Alliance of Heroes servers. Some of you may be surprised that those games were still actually running, but they were, though not for much longer. November 2nd is what I hear for their last day. Most of you won't care, but personally I came over from HX(AoH) and probably wouldn't have ever played GS if not for that introduction. I met my husband there. We've been married for 12 and a half years and have two kids and we're even still pretty happy with one another. :) I made so many friends there, people I've met and partied with in real life (and not just at Simucon either, people who have been to my home, or me to theirs), my maid of honor and so on.

I can't say I'm really shocked or anything, the place has been a ghost town for years, but it still makes me sad. Whenever people worry in GS that they'll shut the game down, I always used to think "No way, they keep AOH going and they only have like 5 subs!" But now, who knows? I'll miss the idea of it, the community of it, and my hoard of text that is now completely irrelevant.

Man, that sucks. I remember being in the beta for HX(AoH), oh so many years ago. I'm surprised they were still running after all these years.

I find this oddly sad.

I posted in another thread that GS wasn't going anywhere because H&X and Modus were still around, now I'm... a little worried. And yeah, it is kind of sad because that's 20something years of people's memories vanishing. I know Modus at least had a small, tight knit fanbase. RIP you crazy knife-fighting archaeologists.

Looking at the Modus page there hasn't been anything posted there for over a year (H&X about 6 months). Is Cyberstrike 2 still floating around or are they getting the axe too?

Speaking of which, where is the official announcement for this? I'm not seeing anything on twitter, the main pages, or in their respective forums.

I will proudly tell you that I was played Modus hardcore and loved every minute of it. I found it when I was looking for something mentally stimulating. I had played this somewhat graphic mystery game and thought, "That was fun!" Doing a search I found Modus, made my character and later, when I realized it was another REAL person talking to me, immediately hit exit. Like the curious cat I am, I did go back about 4 days later and there began my first rpg/mud. Yeah some of the systems there were crap.. but it was an very creative place where I had my own multi-room house, complete with a revolving shoe rack-yes barbie heaven, mined for gold, killed other characters at a fun PvP event and learned to RP, which I still enjoy doing, however poorly.

I hadn't been back in years, but it was always cool knowing some of my contributions were still there.

RIP MO

Where did they announce this?

Where did they announce this?

The GameMasters (including the PM) made the announcement in game (In AOH) earlier this evening, as well as on their AOH Alumni page on FB. As far as Simu goes, as far as I know, they haven't. Active accounts won't be billed for this month and will get a $30.00 Simu credit (as if that could begin to salve over a decade of gameplay, but hey, I guess something is better than nothing). I wish they would make the last month free for everyone, so people who haven't played in ages or who can't otherwise afford it could come and say goodbye, but that's not really how Simu does things.

That would be a really really cool idea. Have a goodbye party/celebration right before they pull the plug with everyone invited for free.

Think of the old names who might show up if they did it GSIV!

I wonder how many active accounts there were. I can't imagine running the servers cost all that money.

I bet it was all of the developers that they were paying the big bucks to that really caused the financial crisis over there in those other games.

I played Modus not long ago: http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?94712-I-Played-Modus

This is sad news. Modus had a really interesting aesthetic and a potential that was never realized during its prime. I really enjoyed exploring Morada (its setting) when the game was first released. It had a sense of humor and overall charm that I haven't forgotten.

I imagine the cost was more in upkeep and GM time, but I don't know, haven't played there in years and no idea how active the GMs were.

How many active GMs were there for MO, and how much do they pay them? Likely the answers are a. very few and b. very little.

Just a thought that if there were any cost, that would be where it would be.

No one onsite was qualified to be PM of their two biggest money makers. I highly doubt these games got even a blip of attention, or had enough off-site GMs. Something was mentioned about new equipment at HQ during SimuCon, if they were on separate machines from GS/DR, I bet those were being retired and no replacements were ordered. Or even if they were on the same servers, no one wanted to use any new resources for them or take the time to set them up. Hopefully this is a good thing for GS/DR, although I'm sorry if other people enjoyed the three games.
