Just from the forum posts on officials, Dragonrealms has like 5 times the number of posts and 600 people+ nightly?! Is it a more popular game?

It was way higher for quite a while. Their most recent expansion turned people off though obviously F2P is boosting both games. Forum posts isn't necessarily a good indicator because their unofficial forums basically died (Smelly Cat) and a lot of those posts are complaints about mechanics changes.

Not even remotely close. I play DR full time and most of my friends who have played both view Gemstone as more popular. If anything, Gemstone has far more unique players on at once time.

There is no unofficial DR forums. The officials are shit and shouldn't be used to judge anything besides the number of mouth breathers and white knights.

If you want a fairly good indicator take a look at merchant activity. Merchant activity is about 200-300% higher on these forums then our comparable "yahoo sales thread."

Also, the DevTeam in dragonrealms is about 1/10 the size of DR. I would say in DR we have maybe... 2-3 coding Devs. Maybe 2-3 coding like 1 hour a week. How many does gemstone have?


If anything, the number of official posts should indicate that people don't actually like playing DR. Or... they would be playing.

Jesus. The fact that there's stuff on GS that's valued at thousands of real dollars blows my mind. Nevermind that characters are what they are. Just ridiculous at times but that's another argument for another time.

Why does it blow your mind exactly? GS is a text-based role playing game, so it appeals to players who love to read and write for fun, or at least enjoy it on a level greater than a member of the general population. People who read and write for fun will be more intelligent, on average, and intelligent people tend to have higher amounts of disposable income, on average. GS can also be time-intensive, so its players tend to have flexibility with respect to their leisure time, another indicator of affluence and high amounts of disposable income. The phenomenon seems fairly unsurprising to me.

I don't know about intelligent but people have disposable money for all sorts of reasons and the Gemstone stuff seems to get traded around a lot. It's not as if your money disappears forever when you buy a Gemstone item -- you hope. I always wonder who will feel the burn the hardest if Simu just closed up shop without so much as a warning.

Well, you figure people have been playing this game for 15-25 years and have a lot of time and money already invested. Plus we are all older now and have been in our careers for a while, so money isn't -quite- as tight as it might be for a typical college-aged kid.
