So, I'm considering switching over my newly re-discovered ranger from TWC style to bow and arrow style. I like TWC much much better (as that's how I see him in my head) but I do want to use this guy for skinning. In that regard, I've heard stories that if you just randomly strike the critter (especially where the skin area comes from) the skin's value decreases dramatically. Is this true? And by how much % wise does it decrease? Do you think in the long run, hunting with bow and aiming for eyes (usually a clean kill in terms of the skin) better overall? Thanks for any info.

Depends on the skin type. If the critter produces an eye when skinned then hitting the eye will indeed mess with the value. This is true for whichever body part is hit that is skinned when said critter is dead.
Honestly I wouldn't build my entire character around this though, if you 1x FA and survival then around level 50 you'll be skinning just about everything like a pro and if you use the Ranger's skinning spell and get the associated lore it will be even sexier.

It's true, and the drop in both value and quality level can be pretty dramatic.
