So, in a more serious toned post and manner, I wanted to see what people's thoughts were on Simucon aside from the obvious "Oh man I felt the warmth of a real woman for the first time!" that I'm sure will come out.

I've never ever attended a convention in my life, since I'm not exactly a stereotypical nerd/gamer geek by most people's standards or friends but as time passed by I've learned to say fuck it and embrace and and not hold me back from doing things I wanted to do.

I've gotten back into visiting the comic shop that just recently opened at the mall nearby and attended DnD sessions and ponder starting to DM there myself weekends. I've always wanted to go to conventions but never had the thirst to do so, especially since most the time I'd be going alone since none of my friends are really into the things I am and that's something that has held me back in the past, like going to Wizard's Comic-Con here in philly that is like 40 minutes away and stuff.

Regardless, I'm pondering attending Simucon next year since I know quite a bit of people whom I speak to normally on a daily basis attend, and thought it may be an interesting vacation/get away to meet some people who play. As of this moment, I have only met one person in real life that also plays Gemstone, and that was fine.

So, thoughts? Opinions?

I'm curious to hear what people think about Simucon aside from the obvious.

I've never attended, as I figured it was for people who had friends among longtime staff and players who were also going. I imagined it would be somewhat awkward to show up and not know anyone, and not have anyone else know of your character(s).

If the above doesn't apply and/or bother you, I imagine you'd be able to have a good time.

I attended over 15 years ago and I went this year. I honestly thought it was better now then it was back then. Everyone was very friendly and within minutes of arrival I was sitting at a table with people I had never met having great conversation. You have total control over your level of involvement and only have to get as nerdy as you want to. 15 years ago the GMs were a somewhat separate group of people that only a small number of players knew well enough to interact with. Every GM I met at this Simucon was more than willing to sit down and talk with players about whatever they wanted to and it creates a much more inclusive environment. Wyrom, Estild, and Tamuz in particular were great and I came away from the con very confident in the people developing the game. Short answer is go, you won't regret it.

I never had the urge to go to one. I talk enough about GS here, I don't really want to go to Satan's Butthole, Missouri to do it in RL too.

Funny you mention D&D as an equivalent. I'm actually at StrateCon right now in LA. I DM enough that the convention is free and that still leaves me a good amount of time to play. Sure, there are a ton of antisocial types of people that are so beyond awkward you might think it's their first time out of the house...but it's no worse than ComicCon...minus the Cos Play.

I'd go to Simucon if I had the time, money, and a way to split the GF Aggro. That'd be an issue this week IF she wasn't off camping.

Yea on of the comic book workers and new buddy of mine turned me towards the DnD Adventurers League and gave me the password for it to login and check stuff out. It's pretty cool since it has seasons and literally follows certain quests/stories along in it, not to mention everything is already created too for you there.

Work was busy as hell and I just now am getting back into DnD and wanted to try my hand at DMing since now apparently it's easier than ever, I just haven't had the time to look at it much with working 12 hour days then GS being busy chock full of shit to attend and all.

Also, thanks for all the input guys on the Con so far

Hey do you have any info on that? Im in SoCal, so maybe next year would work for me.

As to Simucon, I would love to go and geek out with all the other GS players and GMs. When I was younger and didnt have any commitments i couldnt afford to go, and now that I can, I have other things so I cant get the time to go. However, in general I like cons, iv been to a couple of ones that were localish to where iv lived.
