I've been playing another 'free' MUD called The Burning Post II. It's probably more similar to GS Plat, in that it's a very small group of players and more RP focused. In fact, there's no grinding in terms of hunting, all XP is gained through roleplaying (basically their equivalent of 'act' in GSIV).
The theme of the game is similar to the Spanish Inquisition period of time in Spain. The Church is hunting/burning 'mages' in a relatively middle ages setting, and all races are human, no elves, dwarves, etc.
There are a number of guilds including The Holy Order of Dav - the religious sect of the game, based heavily on the Catholic church.
Knights, which are more like Knights Templar, and report to the church.
Brotherhood - Robin Hood types/criminals
Mages - The ones that get burned.
Troubadours - Bards/Spys
Merchants - Crafting (Armor/Weapons/Clothing/Jewelry/Cooking)
Chimerists - Academic types, doctors, alchemists, etc.
Reeves - Civil Law Enforcerers
There is coded crafting, alchemy, poisons and antidotes.
If anyone might be interested, please feel free to check it out. Contact staff at character creation, you can tell them I sent you (character name is Elior) and I'm sure they'll give you a hand getting started if I'm not around myself.
