I have an up and coming ranger that will be picking a companion in the near future. I'd like to get some feedback from you guys about the type of companion you chose and your experiences. I was thinking of going with avian myself, but the mechanical advantages of feline/canine seem so superior its almost a gimp to choose avian or rodent. Would I regret going avian?

Personally I find the companions pretty useless. I picked a white tiger because I thought it was neat looking.

I chose a hedgehog - which is a rodent - purely for RP reasons. Hedgehogs are adorable and I always have fits of glee when I see my hedgehog ripping out a giant's throat or something.

Rodents are supposed to have superior attacking skills, or so they say .. I honestly don't use my hedgehog for attacks, though she automatically attacks if I am hurt.

Honestly I say choose what fits your character best, RP-wise. There were one or two times where I found a corpse somewhere and, being a gnome, wished I had a feline/canine companion to help in dragging, though that's such a rare occurrence that it doesn't matter much and I'm still very happy with my hedgehog.

My ranger has a feline (cheetah)... purely an RP choice. Otherwise, I would've found an eagle/hawk/falcon-sort of avian.

I'm going to get a mud-splattered mongoose purely for RP

Canine, a wolfhound. Super jealous when I saw people get altered dire wolves.

I picked a fox for RP reasons as well. ACs aren't mechanically useful enough to where one type is a must have. The dragging feature could be useful for the small races but really how often would you need that. Messages from the birds also sounds cool though not one I've used...so ya find one that fits your char.

I picked a Raccoon (Rodent) for the increased benefits (Logic and Wall of Thorns defense) when using Assume Aspect: Porcupine. Also she has people hands.
