Familiar Talisman from Spitfire

I have several "subtly carved wooden talismans" from the last spitfire. The way I understood it was that once you bind a familiar using a runestone, these would allow you to summon that EXACT SAME familiar, instead of just the same base type of familiar that just using a runestone would do.

I've also heard that only people who had customized familiars from the Sea Legs and Wings merchant at the Spitfire could use them to then summon those customized familiars.

Would someone who has some experience using this type of talisman mind clarifying? I appreciate the help.

edit: to clarify, the only difference is the spitfire improved versions are guaranteed, whereas the shitty non-spit ones just give you a very good CHANCE to summon the bound familiar.
