What are the thoughts on spell training up to level 50?

40 ranger
7 minor spirit

Balanced approach, strong ranger ranks and still get deeps for TD. Great DS. Spare points from not fully 1x goes into MIU, SMC.

or

50 ranger
3 minor spirit

Assume aspect with one double spell train. Most point intensive and mana intensive to use aspect at 50. 150 mana at 50, 50 to cast for 2 minute, 25 for next 2 min. Maybe not feasible with level 50 mana pool.

or

25 ranger
25 minor spirit

Largest utility, able to open boxes with call lightning. No animal companion (unsure on usefulness), least DS due to low ranger ranks. More utility = more fun however. Next 5 spell ranks likely to get fog greatly slowing the ranger ranks even more.

I've never played a ranger, but doesn't your animal companion attack critters for you? That's pretty badass.

Yes. Your companion can basically take down creatures.

I had a Lion (because I'm a generic jerk) and it was great! It could pounce, which results in knock downs, as well as double attack. Canine companions can disarm. Birds can do wing buffet, which I believe causes RT and knock down. Rodents can hamstring, which causes a knock down.

Oh and the large companions, canine and feline, could drag you and corpses out of dangerous places.

I find companions rarely do anything of value, but give you the added RP of having an animal!

Up to 40 in Ranger, than switch to MnS, and keep training those until you reach 120 or 130 (or even 140, if you want that high), at 1x spells/level.
