I thought getting a read on a lock size with a pick would be fool-proof, but this happened to me today:

You make a poor attempt (d100=30).
You are not able to pick the box, but you get a sense that it has a moderately difficult lock. About a -580 difficulty lock (in thief-lingo).

Same box, new pick:

You make a good attempt (d100=71).
You are not able to pick the box, but you get a sense that it has a difficult lock. About a -665 difficulty lock (in thief-lingo).

That is odd, I cannot recall a lock ever giving me two different values when picking. That could make getting reps for lock mastery a bit of a challenge.

Was there another box in the room? I have never seen that happen at all. It only typically happens with traps.

Was it a soul golem box?

I thought this seemed familiar. You posted about this 2 months ago, chief. http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?95811-Calipers

Easy trolls. While I'm not sure if it was a soul golem (could be, and I do remember them changing lock size), I didn't get the usual "tripped trapped message" when measuring it.

Using your precise vaalin calipers, you carefully begin to measure the lock...
Roundtime: 9 sec.
Measuring carefully, it looks to be an extremely well-crafted lock.
