How often does this happen?

Not often that you get that many. 2-3 is common enough though. Any time you swing, there's a chance of a flare. And every flare counts as a swing.

Where did this particular coraesine come from? They were supposed to be edged weapons (with blades) only.

It looks like the old-style which had a number of blunts type weapons. The older style can flare more than once a swing, I don't believe the new ones can. I have an old coraesine flail and I've seen it flair up to 4-5 times but most stuff is dead before that.

This is an old impure coraesine weapon. It's non-attuning. There is also a morning star and a mace out there somewhere.

I've never been clear as to why they had rules on weapon bases for these. But remember that the old style stuff bears only a passing resemblance to the newstyle stuff.

Something along the lines of it being sentient metal and it requires a blade. According to Simu axes don't have blades.
