So my mother found this among my grandfather's things. It's a money clip with this design on it.

7466

It's clearly some kind of military thing, between the wreath and the crown ensign and the soldier looking guy in the middle. There's a little bit of an optical illusion: the person is in profile with the face on the left, then a helmet above. The person is not facing down and to the right, with mouth agape, wearing one of those plumey hats from 1500s England. I've put it into google search by image and not had any luck. Is anyone familiar with this, or know a good place to look?

edited to add: it was acquired at some point before the 1980s for sure and almost certainly before the 1960s. My grandfather served in Korea but the clip was found next to two souvenir lapel pins decorated with symbols of the Order of Henry the Lion.

We need a thread for helping ID/value real life items. I have a sketch but I can't make out the artists name. I'll try and remember to get a picture and post it.

Looks like it is the military unit cap badge insignia from a British or Commonwealth country.

You could spend 45234523 years trying to figure out which one, because they have so many former and current units.

I think that is possibly Athena in the middle.

Or it could just be a Queen Victoria money clip with her styled as Athena and not be a unit at all.

Where is Antique Roadshow when you need them.

post it to reddit's subreddit "whatisthis" and you can get some surprisingly good/interesting answers. Another section seeks to identify antiques.

Well done Gelly, that is clearly the right track. I will look into Reddit as well.
