Does using 403 or 404 negate posible rep opportunities for picking boxes? I am coming up on 15 and have been floating getting up to 404 to help offset picking my own boxes at least while 2x. I am curious if anyone is aware if using 403 while on LM picking reps will not work if I do in fact cast 403?

404 should never get in the way of lmas ranks
Pretty sure 403 might because sometimes you have to pick boxes that are a challenge for you so it's possible 403 would push your skills high enough that the lock is no matter a challenge. This all depends on the lock pick you are using and the lock difficulty.

If you use lore when you're picking for reps, that increases your max potential lock size and thus the minimum size needed for a rep.

so what I am hearing is use of 403 = direct detriment to ranks. Tg0 brings up an interesting point of mitigating with using lower level lockpicks, any messed with that and seen any results. I would much rather snap 100 copper locks than 1 of the higher end locks if the difficult balances out.

It also depends on the pick you're using like Tgo said, try to use the lowest pick that you can (which you may already be doing). You could have a box that's right at the top end of your range without lore that you get a rep for with 403, but another box that is in the low end of your range without lore will be too low with 403 active.

As you progress through the LM ranks, the baseline pick material increases so you will not be able to use copper picks for reps for very long.

This site: http://www.cmnservicesgroup.com/tsoran/lm.html has a ton of great LM information including the picks you have to use and such.

How many ranks of arcane symbols do I need to disarm scarabs?

I think once you have enough disarm traps skill you don't need any at all. At least I think...
But if you're still pretty low level then 15 should be plenty.

Okay. I haven't had any problem getting them off the boxes, it's disarming them on the ground that I've failed at. Thanks. Will 15 be enough for glyphs too?

You need 200 disarm skill to disarm scarabs once off the box, which can include the disarm enhancement bonus and your wisdom bonus. I believe AS is not a factor in whether you can disarm, but how well you disarm (IE how much the value of the scarab is reduced).

This all might have been true during GSIII or whenever you were a low level last but it isn't true anymore. AS helps you disarm while on the ground which in turn determines the value of the scarab as well as its difficulty. With leveling a couple of new locksmith characters I've found that 30 ranks of disarm and 10 ranks of AS was enough to disarm scarabs. At 8 ranks of AS I still failed at disarming but at 10 I didn't. Not an incredibly large sample size but it matches with the experience other people have had as well.

Jeril is correct! I've always had 12 AS for the last 15 years so that I don't fail neutralizing it on the ground and have never had any issues with one disarm.
Without the minimum amount of AS you take a risk you don't need to take.

I stand corrected. Yeah I was showing my age in my response. You young whippersnappers have to be right once in awhile :)

Yeah I remember the old days and when we switched over to the new system. I remember giving up picking from the path of destruction I left when it first changed... Went from 0 deaths to a death every time I touched a box.
Scarabs use to kill me every time... Didn't realize I needed AS back then...

I probably had 20 ranks in AS before the change and never noticed the difference. I've always used scrolls, so to me AS was an essential skill to learn early.

For my rogue, 2x+ in disarm until i was 3x. 5 ranks in AS was all it took when i was young i think.

I stuck with 10 ranks of AS and I've never had a single problem once my bug was out of the box. Eventually I bumped it up to 14 ranks of AS so I could read the runes and get into the Broken Lands, but 10 was always plenty for the bugs.
