"Nearly a century after their heroic efforts, two World War I veterans who may have been overlooked for the Medal of Honor because of their respective race and religion will receive the honor posthumously, the White House announced Thursday."
One of the men was born in my hometown of Winston-Salem. I think Americans often overlook the importance of WWI and it ought to have a larger share in our national memory. I was very happy to hear about these two receiving the recognition they deserve.

How shameful that they posted Senator McCaskill's quote attributing the lack of recognition to discrimination, immediately after citing new evidence of what happened and an intense lobbying campaign by the families. These awards are already subject to Army politics and many worthy men go unrecognized. The Senator insults all of them.

Probably because there was no ideological struggle that explained WWI. The simplistic explanation that we're given is that it had to due with various alliance treaties coming into effect after the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand. If I remember correctly, there's an even more complex explanation, but I can't recall exactly what it is at the moment. (suffice it to say that WWI is not an accident of history...it was bound to happen as the Austro-Hungarian Empire disintegrated)
Our military history, as taught in grade school level here, is taught with reference with to ideology. Thus the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, WWII, and Vietnam get the lion's share of teaching time. (I haven't figured out why the Korean War isn't included in that, but that's the anomaly.) WWI, with no ideological rationale behind it, doesn't get much....you're taught more about the League of Nations than about the actual war. Of course, in college, you get a much broader view.

Umm, McCaskill's quote deals with Shermin not getting the award after the war. As I read the article, there was no new evidence presented in his case. Since there has been one other Jewish soldier in the past who has not gotten the Medal of Honor because of discrimination and was awarded later, I think your outrage is misplaced.
Not at all. His award was also intensely lobbied for, which is the sentence preceding the quote. Sorry I didn't address each one independently.
