its been awhile since i've played and i was getting e-mails about F2P and thought what the hell. So i made a F2P account, rolled a tried and true rogue and got rather frustrated when i couldn't pick other people's boxes. so im like alright, well lets DO something else with those TPs then and just have one of the 5 bored locksmiths pick my boxes. so i decided i wanted to go a different route, prolly more of a warrior route, i don't know.

here's my character as of level 15. he's still in his first 30 days, so stats can change. i was trying to keep growth in mind without totally gimping myself early on. i'd like to one day get into the later levels but i don't want it to be a pain in the ass to get there either. rethinking i maybe should of tried to optimize for level 40ish growth and then assumed i'd fixstat later when it became more relevant. hopefully earning enough silvers at some point for one.

the plan here was to get into brig as quickly as possible. then drop it all together and rely on 3x dodge for DS. going forward, not training in armor will free up some TPs for some other skills.

i've been training trip and had some success with it, but i haven't had a lot of stamina(i'm at 47 stamina.) i'm not too sure about what factors into aiming in the open with a lance either. i've read about 30 ranks of ambush should be good, and then cm and perception factors into it? i don't know.

i've also considered dropping ambush and perception entirely and putting those points into MOC instead. which would give me about 7 ranks of MOC at level 15. i should be able to train it more going forward since i'm done training armor? the aim being to get x.9-x1 at cap or maybe stop at 60 or 70 ranks.

am i overlooking anything major? is this going to work and be effective? any advise welcome.

THANKS!

I'd suggest you drop dodge down to 2x and put those points to MoC. Lances are the most difficult weapon in the game to aim you are probably going to want more ambush if you truly plan to do that. For open aiming melee weapons the two skills you need are combat maneuvers and ambush. If you are doing it from hiding it only counts your ambush skill, perception does nothing in either case. If you plan to hunt from the open you will probably want more armor and PF.

Something else to consider is if you want to pick peoples boxes, although you likely can't work with too many people right now by 20 if you are 3x pick/disarm you should be able to handle boxes almost twice your level.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't polearms not be used to ambush from hiding? I mean, I'm sure what you're aiming to do is viable, but it's just so infinitely more viable as a warrior. Your goal essentially is to stand out in the open, multistrike, and wear heavier armor. You've effectively removed all the rogue-ish traits from your rogue and become a more expensive, less effective version of a warrior.

Only spears and tridents held in one hand can be used to ambush from hiding.

You left out pilums! You could also use javelins. I will agree though, it sounds more like what he wants is to play a warrior unless he plans to revisit the whole picking thing later on down the road.

this is pretty much what i've gathered. so i'm gonna switch gears on the rogue and try archery or twc or something other than polearms and at least be able to pick my own boxes. and then i guess i'm gonna roll up a warrior and see how that goes.

Seems like a solid plan. Below 1x CM was gonna be grim for melee.

made the switch to archery today and picked up a ruic long bow. i did a little under hunting to feel it out and was impressed. i could mostly stay hidden and just snipe away. got a little out of hand when i got ebladed arrows and wizards strength. granted i was under hunting, but it was pretty effective. currently i'm looking like...

working on getting 1.5x-2x ambush as points free up, but i'm not sure if i should push for 3x s&h first. aimed sniping causes an 8 second rt. 7 with surge. i'd consider this a bit long, but feels safe in hiding. should i switch to smaller bow for better rt? what about cmans? i'm current rank 2 or 3 in smastery and rank 1 or 2 in surge of strength. not sure what else i should be looking at, archery options seem limited.

RT will go down as you level up and stats increase...don't depend on hiding after about level 60. It's still viable in some hunting areas, but the closer you get to cap the harder it will be...even with 3x hide and max Smastery you'll still get found by a lot of critters (especially undead and animals) and some higher-level areas (like certain areas of the rift) will just drop you out of hiding at random, or make it nearly impossible to hide in the first place.

RT is based on strength bonus (every 10 gives -1 to RT) so you might want to raise that depending on how fast or slow it will grow. Also perhaps switch to a short bow to drop a second of RT until your strength is high enough to get the desired or acceptable RT with a long bow.

You need vanish, the best cman out there for a sniper. Get vanish before surge, and like others have said change your STR bonus to a multiple of 10.

Then get 2x ambush.

Personally I had other priorities before going 2x-3x on S&H. MIU/AS might be helpful for spell access, or 3x picking will really extend your range if you are into that. Depending on society some HP, and you will need climbing/swimming and survival eventually.

Hiding works very well at cap and certainly works from 60-95ish, arguably the best time for hiding is after level 50, so I'm really not sure why this is your position.

The vast majority of the creatures on that list are pretty much blind.

There are caveats with hiding in the Rift, and a lot of undead in the Scatter/Plane 4 which are annoying, but it is still a very effective offensive and defensive tactic.

However, OTF, Elemental Planes, Bandits, Grimswarm, are all relatively easy to hide from.

The best defense is never facing an AS/DS or CS/TD resolution and hiding is one of the best ways of insuring that as a rogue

The second is ewave, which is slightly less effective as you gain levels because nearly all monsters "move fast".
