View Full Version : A general polling of interest, and a Gemstone staffing question

So, my company makes tabletop RPGs, and I've entertained the thought of approaching Simutronics about a Gemstone RPG. Is this something Gemstone players would have any interest in, specifics-aside?
And as I've been away from Gemstone for awhile, in the current staffing structure who is in charge of Gemstone? Still Eric? Someone new? I know staffing changes all the time around there but it feels like Eric's been stable in his position for some time, unless I'm totally off base?

Sure, but multi-accounting would probably be impossible.

You gotta buy a multi-account pass in the Simu store.

As much as I'd love to see a Gemstone tabletop, from a marketing standpoint, I've got to say that it doesn't sound like all that profitable an idea. You license a property because it has a widespread draw..Simu has never really been one to market its products beyond word of mouth. Our small community grew based on us convincing each other to play, and in the grand scheme of things, that community is still very small. Nobody's going to walk into a hobby shop and say "Oh man GEMSTONE! I've got to have that!". Well, some might obviously, but compared to if you were to say, license and develop an Adventure Time tabletop (which judging by Adventure Time Munchkin would be immensely profitable), there's just not a candle held. I'm probably on the way, way high end of the estimate when I say that I doubt Gemstone on the whole has never been even tried by more than 100,000 unique people, much less played, loved, and widely accepted culturally enough to be a draw.

I dunno what'd make it truly different/unique from gemstone proper though. I mean, mechanics the game relies heavily on d100 rolls, you're just altering that for a d20 roll and changing it from text to speech.
If it floats your boat, go for it.
If it really takes off, I'll GM the first event of the Griffin sword saga at a table at the Wayside Inn... bring your parchments and dice.

Use d100 dice.

Gemstone was originally based on a tabletop RPG: Rolemaster's Shadow World campaign setting. I can imagine a Gemstone IV campaign setting for use with Pathfinder or whatever as a labor of love but I don't think there's any money in it.

I donno WTF you guys are talking about. I'm still trying to convince Ardwen to buy the Rolemaster books online so we can play an in-Gemstone version of Gemstone using the ICE rules, and a thrak inn table or something. WOO!

That's awesome. I can't do it with Silvean because he has too much dignity to play a roleplaying game but I could definitely make a F2P alt for this purpose. I even have the Shadow World atlas in a box somewhere.

It wouldn't be d20, and it wouldn't necessarily have to mirror the same mechanics. It'd be more about capturing the feel of the setting that having identical mechanics. To a degree, yes, you want them to sync up, but it's more about building a fun set of game mechanics for the setting.

A bunch of us want to do it just... because. It would be hilarious. GM's would no doubt sit in and watch, invisible, while we created and leveled characters inside the game where we created and leveled characters!

I think they're still talking about them playing an RPG in-game, and I'm trying to talk about making the game I started this thread in regards to.

That's because you are not invited to RP in our RP RPing. Or XZibit.
