I need Sheldon Cooper to explain this to me.

"growing evidence" != one paper

This is pop sci getting a hard on for weird preliminary research papers.

This is true. But at the same time, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Hell, Mars One got "pop sci fiction" into the mainstream. All over facebook, news sites. You heard about it even if you never gave a shit about science or space or exploration. And while since its inception it was at very best super shaky science held together by fairy wishes and unicorn farts, it made space exploration "cool" again. Now we care about what Mars One did wrong so we can figure out how to do it right. We wouldn't have given it a thought otherwise. I cite Build The Enterprise as evidence (http://www.buildtheenterprise.org/). That one guy's been touting the idea for over a decade now. Is it ridiculous and completely financially insane? Absolutely. Is the science shaky and possibly impossible right now? Damn skippy. The only difference between it and Mars One is/was public support. It faces the same hurdles (a realistic pricetag in the trillions and science that may not be sufficient) as Mars One did. But Mars One got the money, and it renewed our interest in space exploration as a society of people who had generally stopped caring at all.

What I mean to say is...yeah, it's early scientific data probably based on a small handful of studies. No reason not to get excited about it. Excitement (and Boris the Blade) is what causes us to go to the moon. To a comet. To look at Europa, and Mars, and the universe as a whole. Excitement brings the money, and the money funds the science, and the science either goes forward when proven sound (Apollo), or stalls out when proven wrong (Mars One). But what it doesn't do is fall completely beneath everyone's radar (Build The Enterprise).

Excitement can indeed bring in more money. In other news the recent information about the EmDrive resonance chamber that NASA is working is beyond exciting. I can't wait to see what comes of that.
