I have gotten this message several times recently when measuring locks with calipers:
You place the probe in the lock and grimace as something feels horribly wrong...
My problem is that none of the boxes have actually been trapped. Picked and opened no problem. What am I missing?

I don't think I've gotten that message. Hmm... Do you regularly calibrate your calipers?

Yeah they are perfectly calibrated. Recently has happened to about 3/4 of boxes I pick.

Hmm I'll have to pay more attention. I have ;calipers running all the time for getting lock sizes and color code traps so this part might not stand out to me if I received the message. Is there any possibility that you can fumble measuring a lock?

Have you tried other calipers?

Picked many many boxes and I've never seen that message.
I have some calipers that were broken by trying to alter them to 'a long measuring stick' (shattered). They are only calibrated for a single measurement and then they go to 100% uncalibrated again. And I've never seen that message with it either.
How much picking locks & disarming & perception do you have? 1x? 3x?
Can you post a little log of it happening? Would ;calipers still give a response?

This. They are soul golem boxes.
For what it's worth they are unaltered calipers from the Spitfire, I am 3x in picking.

All soul golem boxes have no trap but. .
They have a unique lock that increases in difficulty any time you fail a picking attempt. That is the 'trap' and reason for that calipers message.

I'm not certain that the lock size always increases, I believe it just fluctuates after every attempt until you're able to crack it.

Just reinforcing Rolfard's comment here that the message in the original post occurs when you measure through a trap which can be set off by picking. I think it's the same message you get when picking through a trap (just with "caliper" instead of "lockpick"), right?
As for the information about soul golems in particular: Interesting stuff. Didn't know that!

Correct.
