View Full Version : Looking for Sci Fi I missed

I'm looking for at this point, really really obscure sci fi I'm guessing. TV shows, miniseries', movies. Not necessarily set in space, but...sci fi. You know how it is. I'd go so far as to say something like Seeking a Friend for the End of the World would be on the outskirts of something I'd qualify. Anyway, doesn't matter on genre, comedy, action, drama..would prefer not straight horror as I tend not to like those as much, like Event Horizon or...what was that one with the spaceship where everybody went crazy? Pandorum? I've got a huge comprehensive list already, so chances are, if it's mainstream or out in the last few years, I've got it. Cartoons are fine (See Titan A.E.), but no Anime. I just can't. Dunno why. No good reason. What I'm looking more for is suggestions I wouldn't have gotten in the past, if anyone can think of any potentials. Things out of the recent spotlight, like Red Dwarf or Terra Nova for example. Recent things that weren't so well advertised, like Europa Report, Snowpiercer, that sort of thing are good too, though I'm fairly sure I've got most of the recent ones already. What'cha got? Thankya!

You didn't like Event Horizon!?
TV - Continuum, Orphan Black, Extant, 12 Monkies, Season 1 of Helix.
Movie - Automata
I'll add more as they come to mind.

Event Horizon was about the closest I can get to straight horror and still enjoy the movie. Beyond that, I wouldn't really enjoy it though. Things like Alien, those are great. They strike a nice balance. The first half of Sunshine was good. Then it got super stupid in the last 30 minutes.
Also, I have never heard of any of those you listed except Automata, which I have, just haven't watched yet. I'm gonna track 'em all down. Thanks!

You're probably aware of it, but we need to establish a baseline for where you're at.

Moon.
If Sam Rockwell's in it, I've seen it. He's one of my favorite actors. :). Though, Moon was just okay in my book. See Choke though if you haven't! It's not Sci Fi, but it is awesome.

Yeah he's awesome. I just watched "A Single Shot" the other day based entirely on the strength of him as an actor and having no appeal for the description. Turned out to be pretty good, gritty.
I've recently gone a bit crazy with pulling random movies based entirely on the fact I hadn't heard of them and whatever little IMDB teaser seemed interesting, and I've watched a lot of utter garbage in the process, lots of bad obscure scifi. Having a usenet account or not, just paging through this site: https://www.usenet-crawler.com/movies?title=&actors=&director=&rating=&genre=Science+Fiction&year=&t=2000 will give you enough of a supply of obscure sci-fi titles to keep you busy.

Oh wow. Great link. Thanks! I'm gonna spend some time going through that. The first page alone has 3 or 4 movies I've never even heard of.

Some of these I've seen but haven't thought about in yeeears, like Steel Dawn with Patrick Swayze. And some of them are a spectacular cache of comedy gold, the descriptions:
"It is 2020 and the impending apocalypse is inevitable. Due to a rapidly growing Black Hole headed straight for the sun, "
This will keep me occupied for weeks. Thanks guys!

You can sort by rating too.

I've really never been big on other people's ratings. Don't get me wrong, usually they're spot on, but I (and I can't for the life of me think of an example right now) know for sure that I've seen a few movies that have like 10-30% on rottentomatoes that were just spectacular. At any rate, I try to have ratings blinders til I see movies now so I can be unbiased on the first watching. Damn, now it's gonna bug me that I can't think of an example.

The mix of the way things are just naturally is great, there's "Cool World" right before "Interstellar". And then there are random movies from the 60s in there too. Hungover Sundays have gotten very entertaining for me.
I find myself compelled to watch the really bad ones based on their descriptions being just so bad. Typically I don't browse by just Sci-Fi, but it's usually the bad sci-fi movies that pull me in.

One Star. ONE STAR!! Are you insane Comcast!?! (Not my screenshot but I *knew* someone else would have noticed that horribly incorrect rating and put it on the internet).
I'm with you, ratings don't typically work for me, I subconsciously ruin movies for myself if they get over-hyped too.
I will occasionally browse "lists" on imdb that people make that the list contains a movie I like or am in the mood for something similar. Occasionally I'll see an Imgur/Reddit "You haven't lived if you haven't seen these InsertGenre movies!" and they're generally awful lists, like really awful, but there might be one or two in the list of twenty that pique my interest.

These are far, far from great examples here, because each had its own issues, but I enjoyed them enough to considered their ~30% ratings on rottentomatoes flawed: Click - Sure, Adam Sandler doing tired Adam Sandler gigs but this time with a magical remote control, but a touching story underneath. Jersey Girl - Seems to have been rated (and had its box office tanked) specifically by the fact that it had Jennifer Lopez in the preview, and movie for 30 seconds. People assumed it was Gigli 2, and rated it accordingly. But the movie was good. The story was good. George Carlin was awesome. Kevin Smith is awesome. It was a good, not great movie overall. But it was far from a 30%.

Off topic a bit, but Jennifer Lopez was in a few movies I liked. "The Cell" was an awesome movie (slightly "torture porn"-ish during a few scenes but a good sci-fi, kind of "Hannibal" w/ more science - speaking of that TV show is ungodly good). Parker was a good movie too, she was fantastically over billed/under represented, think Steven Seagal in Executive Decision, not that bad, but still (I'd compare it to a "typical Statham flick", but he's had some nasty duds, fucking Blitz).

Billy Madison sucked.
I suggest:
2001: a space odyssey
The thing (sci fi-ish/horror)
Dune (one of the most sci fi-ish stories out there)
Blade runner (assuming you've seen this)
Ghost in the shell (movie and TV series. Season 1 at least)
Pacific rim
I could keep going.... Neuromancer is on my list of books to read in kindle, just haven't gotten too far into it. Supposed to be deep sci fi and an early inspiration for the matrix, along with ghost in the shell and others.

Have all of the above except Trancers, which I remember vaguely something about. I'll check it out! Thankya. Oh, and Ghost in the shell. Isn't that anime though? That's what always stopped me from ever considering it. It looked like anime.

It is anime. That and akira are 2 must watches if you're into sci fi. Or just wait for the live action versions of both, but I doubt either will be anywhere near the originals in quality.

Some that I actually enjoyed were the Final Fantasy CGI ones - The Spirits Within was a good starter. It has some voices you'll recognize if you haven't seen it already.
And you've probably seen it, but I always loved Farscape. Oooh, and a classic which is terrible and good all in one - Flash Gordon! He'll save every one of us!!

I loved FF: The Spirits Within. It was such a beautiful creation and the music was amazing. Still one of my favorites.

I was definitely pleasantly surprised. The CGI is awesome (And is just as good as Advent Children) and surround sound is pretty intense too. Plus, couldn't belive some of the actors that had signed on to do the voice overs.

Spirits within was pretty good. Steve Buscemi's in it! On the subject of CGI ones, the 2012 Starship Troopers from Japan was pretty well done as well. It's not great by any means, but certainly more watchable than the live action sequels.

Though it only lasted 1 season, Almost Human is worth a watch IMO

On the video games front, if you've never played through Bioware's Mass Effect series, you've done yourself a great disservice. Though at this point you'd likely be best off waiting for E3 to see if they announce a remastered trilogy.

Equilibrium, I enjoyed that too. My favorite part was the sword fight. Sean Bean .
If you don't mind losing some IQ points "Buckaroo Banzai", "Wing Commander", and "Alien from LA". Kathy Ireland at her finest in that one.
Disney's old movie "Black Hole".

Man, I missed way more movies than I thought when I made my big list to make sure I'd seen it! Thanks guys. And wow, Seizer. I had totally forgotten about Wing Commander. That's treading on dangerous ground though, because Wing Commander 3 the game was a movie in itself, and I might have to figure out how to emulate it after watching the movie. I'm sure gog.com has it. Haha
Edit: Just gonna HAVE to watch Equilibrium too. I've always teased one of my best friends that Boromir was truly the villain of The Lord of the Rings, because back in 2001, before extended editions and all that, they just flat out made him a superdouche without explaining how or why he got that way. At any rate, any chance of him playing the bad guy is further "proof" I can stick in his face that Sean Bean is ALWAYS the villain. Plus he's a good actor, so y'know...there's that.

Equilibrium is another great movie. Im not a Christian Bale fan because I think hes a prick (E news has dirt on him claiming that his an egotistical actor who thinks hes better than everyone else.) But he played a great role and the fight scenes were great.
