View Full Version : Sonic Weapon Question

So, my sonic weapon is not as good as my +20 vultite ones.

When ... and how ... does it become so?

The cost in mana for using one is so high, I guess I keep having bigger expectations.

The bonus is equal to 10 + (Bard Songs / 2). The bonus will not be equiv to vultite until you have 20 bard songs. I've commonly seen bards only use them early in their careers for undead since they are permablessed by nature. Later on when mana and the multi-song penalty is lessened, more bards use them for the flares.

20 bard spell songs would be +20 enchant, sonic weapons are always +10 against undead.

Base enchant is 10 + 1 for every 2 bard song ranks.

The sonic flares is where sonic weapons shine but it is pretty expensive to upkeep the song at lower levels.

Every 2 songs known adds +1 to your sonic weapon (which starts at a base of +10), to the max of +35. All songs known, not just those after 1012. And it rounds up.

At 19 songs known it will be +20, 29 songs it is +25, so on and so forth.

It gets better the more bard spells you have, I think it's the same attack strength as vultite when you have 20 bard songs, also air lore will also grant it the chance to flare.

Well damn, it took 20 minutes but we're all here now!

You guys forgot that the bonus rounds up though, so I win.

I forgot nothing. I don't believe in rounding.

You might not believe in it but her sonic weapon's enchant does!

Thank you everyone! (laugh)

I think I know 25 bard songs, so I need to look at this again, because I distinctly remember it as not as good as vultite.

And if you train again past 25 songs, but, you know, the next one doesn't happen until 30, do those extra 'between' trainings count in the bonus? Or only the actual songs you know? (ohmygosh, you guys are bound and determined to make me do math, right?!)

One reason could be if you are using against undead? It will not flare nor will it get the bonus. Just a regular ole +10 I believe no matter how many trains. And certain Lore trainings help with the flaring when you do use it against regular stuff. Air lore maybe?

It goes by ranks not actual songs know, so yes it counts song ranks between 25 and 30. Also is it possible your vultite weapon is enchanted?

Maybe that was it. But a regular vultite gets the entire +20?

I'm pretty sure they are both just +20 vultite. I will sing to them when I get there.

You guys rock! I will go find something to hit and figure it out now. It is very close to time to train so I might do it again after that, just to see what the difference is. :)

At lower levels, when you don't have the mana, a physical weapon will be a better bet... especially because you'll likely be dedicating quite a few levels towards MnE training, when your weapon won't be getting anymore potent.

Consider it a short-term investment... you can always sell it once your sonic overtakes it, and you have the MP to keep sonic weapon song active.

Yea, vultite is +20 at base. But, it could be enchanted or might have been GM Treasure dropped and has been upgraded. If you sing to it, it should tell you what the (+) rating is. The only time I saw a drop with my Bard was hunting undead. Otherwise, it was really nice to hunt with the sonic weapon. Also, I believe TGO has a script or two that helps figure out what the best choice of renewal or stop/start of songs is. You get penalties depending on how many songs you're singing. Maybe a tweak with that will help you conserve some mana to keep your sonic weapon going.

I double checked, it is +20. And totally it might have been undead. I wonder why it does not count vs. undead when a regular vultite weapon does.

I don't think I need a script to figure out what songs at this point. I'm pretty sure that all I do and remain able to use Lullabye during hunting is Song of Luck, Kai's, and Song of Mirrors.

Even that ... does not get me through an entire hunt when I go alone without pausing to cover mana quickly on a node anymore. Or foregoing Lullabye for the duration. (a really scary thought, that)

It gets me _almost_ there :)

Sigh, I have been so proud of my almost 31 levels. And ... it is still low.

Unless you're fighting creatures that use combat maneuvers or boil/web/etc, you probably don't need to sing 1006 full time. I recall not being able to use 1005 constantly at that time, but I am sure I was singing 1003, 1007, 1010, and 1019 full time.

What are you hunting?

I've seen that lucky message so many times that ... I'm not sure I am ready to give it up!

When around the Landing, I hunt Ice Trolls and the nasty Snow Crones (ugh) when they interfere with my hunt.

The luck has saved me a couple times from a snow crone, for instance. And I need all the help I can get from them ... they send me fleeing back to town half dead all the time for healing.

But I'm willing to listen to a good case for doing this differently :)

I never hunted the glacier extensively! I believe we went from hunting roa'ters and rotting corpses to skeletal lords at Varunar. If you want to try Varunar, use 1002 to blow up the corpses' scythes and the lords' lances, and then you will have no reason to sing 1006. They DO swing very hard so make sure you disarm them as a first priority.

Of course, they are all undead so you'll have to use regular blessed weaponry... But IIRC none of them cast any spells except phantasmas but they are downstairs in the castle and not in the way.

I use to groan whenever I got a task to hunt snow crones. Damn things never spawned for me. I second the Varunar suggestion. One of my favorite hunting areas in the Landing area, after Darkstone.

Chiming in late, I realise. Around that train I used an invar weapon. Cast 411 at it and hack away, cheap way to have a flaring weapon. For undead yeah I'd use a sonic, or get a cleric to bless my 4x weapon. It's been ages, but I don't think I used sonic weapon til the 40s. 1002 was and is my bard's bread and butter. It's nice when you get a crit kill from a exploding weapon. I am with the above posters, Varunar was a lot of fun for disrupting the lords lances, and phantasms whips. Skeletal lords occasionally disarm, I think the worst part was skeletal warhorses and there damn kicking.
