A couple questions for the really experienced locksmiths out there:
As far as I can tell, OTF box traps go as high as -480 and locks go as high as -1270. This is based on three years of hunting the area.
1. Has anyone seen a trap from anywhere higher than -480? If not, I am having trouble seeing the need to train the full 3x in disarm skill. In fact, 2.6x would seem to be fine unless one expects to be able to always get a trap the first time, and can handle the very rare incident (perhaps once a year or so, at least with OTF boxes) of setting off a trap.
2. I am pretty certain that the Scattered area has tougher locks. What other permanent areas have locks tougher than -1270?
Thanks for any input.

Some extremely rare invasion boxes have had traps harder then -480. While being completely maxed in disarm isn't needed, it does give you a bigger buffer against mishaps. Scatter and Nelemar both have tougher locks, some of the boxes I've pulled from them have had 1400+ locks.

My highest Scatter was 1450. I can't remember the trap. I want to say it was 500? I can't exactly recall. I wasn't full in disarm then, and passed it to a friend to disarm, who was 3x and used enhancives.

Most difficult lock picked: -1285
Most difficult trap disarmed: -480
From OTF boxes.

-480 is the highest I've seen. I get higher reads at times but it's never updated my highest trap disarmed. I think Rlen's profile only list -480 too...
I dropped my disarm ranks down to 272 at one point to get up to 430 in spells. I ended up having my first awry message on a scale trap that was at 480. I had even put on my enhancives to be more careful and it didn't help. That was pretty rare... Now I'm working on capping it back out...
I've seen quite a few temple boxes above -1400. I rarely see a scatter box that high.

This must be it, because I probably got a higher read, and wasn't the one who ended up disarming it successfully. TY for clarifying.
It's why I don't put my rogue there *scatter or nelemar* anymore. He's parked and picks for OTF people, and I can just TPick it zombie style and not worry about blowing anyone up. Scatter and Nelemar sometimes have FUCKYOUINVASIONLEVEL boxes. =(

And is it just me, or do the boxes in warcamp boxes get harder the deeper you go. Kill a hundred mobs, get five boxes, sure not too bad. But I've had some really high warcamp boxes at the end of a 500 deep camp.

I've been tempted to try tpick but haven't brought myself to trusting it enough to try. I just use the function keys. I manually type out what pick to get and type out pick right to make sure I don't accidentally hit a function key picking a trapped box.

Tpick allowed me to do one thing.
Take a level 83 rogue. And a level 2 paladin.
Stock up the rogues entire premium locker in every town with boxes.
Drop them all at once at a table, once the paladin brings too many boxes.
Pick them all at once.
By the time I capped my paladin, the rogue had been capped for a while.
TPick helped me do that. SO. EASY.

OTF boxes, in my experience, aren't as hard as Nelemar boxes in general. From OTF my previous best was around -1285 I think... Then we moved to Nelemar and it's now -1400... And my best trap hasn't changed so -480 for OTF and Nelemar.
My best trap & best lock
Most difficult lock picked: -1400 (real box - From Nelemar)
Most difficult lock picked: -1405 (from a box-making machine we have in Shattered - was trying to see if it would contribute to my 'best lock picked')
Most difficult trap disarmed: -480 (also from Nelemar)
My Locksmith in Shattered has picked a ridiculous number of boxes - so -480 is probably the absolute max from Nelemar/OTF. I haven't tried Scattered yet, and probably never will.
I will say that he's fully trained for picking, and I tried to get a -1450 out of that box-making machine and even after MANY attempts I just couldn't get it. If I recall correctly, even the -1405 took an open endroll. Maybe if I found some enhansives I could pull it off, but I doubt they'd force you to be enhanced to pick a box.

Good to know, it's been ages since I had the -1270 box, and I can pick better.
I have doubts about being able to hunt the Scattered alone (will post about it), but I'll have to head to Nelemar to find some tougher boxes.

Oh man. In shattered I got my locksmith from ~50 to 100 on boxes alone. He just sat in a room, everybody dropped their boxes, and if he wasn't fried he'd pick one up and open it. Rinse/repeat.
You'd know the script broke in the night because I'd come back on to a room full of boxes, 'and some other stuff'... I think calipers might have a durability or something because by the time I was 100 I thought it was normal to have to calibrate calipers 2-3 times after every box. Then I picked up some fresh ones - turns out they had just been used so many times.
In Plat we did the locker trick. Scripts would all just locker our boxes, then every couple days we'd drop em all and get my picker going. Since I didn't care as much about the XP (since I couldn't just leave it going over night), I had another script... It would get the ID's of all the boxes dropped in a room. So even if it went to 'and some other stuff', it would know all the boxes in the room... Then it would disarm each one. Then pick them all at once rapid-fire with a Vaalin lockpick & 403. Open each one, and get all the stuff from them, then toss em...
Fun fun. I love picking - I'd say it's probably my favorite GS mechanic.

-480 is the most difficult trap produced by the treasure system doesn't really matter what from, even invasions but a GM can sneak in boxes with more difficult traps if they want.

Like the bee trap and sleep trap you can't actually detect....
