These things are so awesome and it was so worth the wait to have one done. While I was hoping for one alter, I'll have to get that with my spirit beast (if I can ever catch Ilixil), but what I got instead was pretty damn awesome:
A sapphire-eyed silvered arctic fox

a black and tan wrinkle-faced bloodhound.
A potential girlfriend for Winston. Lulz
The wrinkle-faced bloodhound sniffs at a droopy-eyed tan bloodhound.

Wow. Are these new to this event? I remember there were items which allowed you to summon a specific looking familiar. Very glad to see wizards having the opportunity to get this done.

It is very new and while it's iffy if there will be permanent talismans available any time soon, having a binding rune and stocking up on the talismans at Sea Legs and Wings will allow it be be "permanent." Only works with the talismans in this shop, though.

To get a familiar altered, should we have more or less picked a familiar we like? Does the alterer make suggestions or do you need to have the exact look in mind? I'm level 36 and don't really use a familiar much yet, but would like to take advantage of this if I can as I may not get the chance for quite some time.

As I was told, the familiars have to be representative of animals that could be summoned from the wilds, so it can't be like... off the wall ridiculous. No purple wolves, for instance. The merchant was great about making suggestions for me. Whatever you do, get as many blank talismans as you can so you can keep that baby bound or else you lose it.

That's another question I had. I bought 4 talismans. About how many should I buy?

Each one has 20 uses. I'm shooting for 10, personally, before they close but I imagine it depends on your spell duration and how often you intend to use it.

You can keep casting Call Familiar, too, so there's that.

Roblar informed me the talismans may be 10 uses. Too lazy to double check on that, but I'd go with Roblar's info.

I am a pretty full-time, always-has-the-same-familiar kind of wizard. That said, I plan on buying at least 100. (Which I know will take me YEARS to go through.)
That said... Owly has now augmented his plumage a bit. He's gone from "a barn owl" to "a pale-faced coppery barn owl"

Are these just common runestones or are they at the shop also? I've had familiars but never used a runestone to stave one.

You need to put the binding rune onto the runestone in order to bind the familiar to the talisman.

If you need to learn the binding rune, I'm sure one of us can make it happen for you.

I think I may have to take you up on this, I don't seem to know the rune. I only have the one that lets you unlearn an uncommon one - and the gate rune also.

a long-bodied stocky herding dog
.. I wanted to get an actual corgi, though she said "no breed names". I suppose bloodhound/foxhound/mastiff are allowed since they're fairly standard.

if you take another talisman and bind your altered familiar to it, can someone else than cast at that other talisman to get the same familiar? I know it works for the original wizard, just not sure about others.

The merchant should be back today. Their auction for a permanent talisman with a special monkey attuned to it ends today. Believe they said they'd be around for more alteration work today. They did a ton of a people, and were basically trying to get everyone there.

I was wondering this as well, i'm assuming not otherwise the unique familiars from auctions aren't very unique (obviously owning the permanent talisman is a boon)

You cannot bind to another wizards casted familiar. I already tried and it won't work.

no, but can you cast from another talisman that has been bound to the familiar? I figured someone would know since they've been released before, but I'll try to test tonight. I got a house themed one I'd like to offer to house members.

Talismans themselves are not bound. If a wizard makes a talisman from their altered familiar, they can hand that talisman off to anyone.

can the talisman be "written over" after being bound?

You see Ship's Alchemist Thris.
She appears to be a Halfling.
She is tiny and appears to be young. She has sea green eyes and ruddy skin. She has cropped, sun bleached tawny hair worn in tangled, bead-weighted locks. She has a dainty face, a crooked nose and wild smattering of freckles. The skin along her cheekbones and nose are peeling from what appears to be a recent sunburn.
She is in good shape.
She is wearing a sunbleached kerchief, a knotted sailcloth haversack, a soft linen bodice, a layered handkerchief skirt, and a pair of twisted rope sandals.
>gld initiate thris
You invite Thris to become a member in the Wizard Guild, saying, "Thris, by applying to the Wizard Guild, you swear by this oath:
"I solemnly swear to continually strive towards greater knowledge and understanding for the good of all Elanthia. I promise never to misuse the knowledge I gain for personal gain or to bring harm to others. I vow to accept this greater responsibility that comes with such power."
Do you agree to abide by this oath?"
Thris giggles at you.
(You earn 450 silver, 200 experience, 2000 fame.)
Thris agrees to the oath and gives you the required 4500 silver initiation fee.
"Welcome to the Wizard Guild," you say and shake her hand.
>grin thris
You grin at Thris.
