I just wanted to go ahead and make a new thread to officially welcome all of the new F2P characters that have been lurking around the forums. I've been doing my best to make the rounds between the cities, handing out 902s, claids, whatever you all need to get up and running.

A lot has changed over the years. The first thing that I'd like to do is recommend Lich. While there is definitely a stigma attached to... well... basically mods... Lich offers a series of nice features that assist in returners, but the main things that I'm going to highlight are Narost, Go2, and Lnet.

Narost (Tsoran backwards) is a map integration script which pulls down all of the most updated maps created by the player community. As you move around Elanthia, Narost will automatically re-center and adjust to ensure that you can see the rooms around you.

Narost directly interfaces with Go2. Clicking directly on the map will input all of the movement commands to reach the destination room. Additionally, Go2 comes with pre-programed places. So you can simply type ;go2 town to return to TSC, or ;go2 bank, ;go2 pawnshop. It just takes a lot of the redundancy out of it.

You may realize shortly upon returning that the crystal amulet is nothing but crickets... even with the introduction of a global thought amulet. A lot of socializing / merchanting occurs on Lnet / Merchant channel nowadays. Don't think of it so much as breaking the third wall so much as being a replacement to signing into AOL Instant Messenger and talking with your friends through something like that.

If you do feel like any of these features breaks your immersion in the game, you can always disable subsets of them. Or don't install it at all. Really the intent of this post is to let you know that it's available to you, and that you'll have a great support team that will be able to assist you in re-integrating into society. I'd hate for someone to give up on returning to gemstone because they felt isolated and couldn't get any help!

That brings me to my last point. I know many of us are doing our best, but if anyone ever needs any help, whether it be training advice, simple command information, etc... Please don't hesitate to reach out to me and ask. I can also provide claids or other less basic starting equipment. Like I said, I'm just happy to see all of the new blood out there and such interest in returning.

Have definitely been enjoying hunting rats (and punching them to death) with my cleric. Almost level 3, woo!

Thank you, Whirlin, and all the other people who have been putting to much energy into welcoming all the new F2P characters, whether they're old people returning or actual new people to the game. You're all what makes GemStone amazing. It's been amazing, seeing so many old-timers and new-comers come out of the woodwork to help the influx of newbie-characters. :)

Keep an eye out for me in game as well. If I can help at all, I'd be happy to.

My advice so far for new/returning players: Do not stick with the web client to play. It is glitchy and limited. When you log in on the GS4 website, you will see a OTHER CONNECTIONS link under your character name. https://www.play.net/gs4/play/home.asp

Your choices are Web Client, Stormfront, Wizard, or Java.

I would personally recommend Stormfront. It is like a better version of the Web Client. However, if you wish for a simpler interface, The Wizard removes all of the hyperlinks and some functionality from the Front End (the program used to run the game) in exchange for less performance issues and a bit more stability.

Tip #2: Make frequent use of the SERVICE SHOW verb to find players who are actively looking to provide services that you will find useful.

After forcing guilds on us forever.

Thread: Welcome to all our new F2P players

No one is forced to join a guild.

Why yes, anonymous neg repper, no one is forced to join a guild. But we could have had all of those benefits without something that doesn't fit modern GS at all. The game would be more welcoming to all without the guilds.

As a f2p, Thank you for the welcome. Also, Lich is GREAT! Installed it today and still figuring out everything. By the Gods does it make finding areas so much faster!

Doesn't the CMAN system do just that?

For some of the physical skills in the Rogue and Warrior guild, sure. Not alchemy, LM, etc.

Fair enough. I guess I still don't see the guild system as a horrid blight upon the game. I've gone through illusions and while annoying, it was nice not to have to spend TPs. If I could actually make combat gains without spending them I'd definitely do it.

Supa fast. Narost is also excellent for doing it kind of the old style way of walking around too just so you always have your bearings.

With Narost I'm still finding areas and secret paths that I didn't know about in hunting grounds I've been messed around in for years.

I'm returning after over a 10 year hiatus. What's the main differences between the F2P and P2P models? The site says some obvious limitations, but what critical or nice to have items do you miss out on in F2P?
