I'll do my best to give an overview of the event, hopefully others will fill in the details I miss/mess up.
Each trip to the Arena consists of 5 fights, assuming you beat each opponent. They happen immediately after one another. You have 5 minutes to defeat each opponent, or the event ends in a draw. At any point, you can surrender.
The key to the event is you earn more Bloodscrip the longer the fights last, BUT as you get later into your 5 minutes, the traps and such around you get stronger, and you start to get riddled with wounds.
Fight 1 - 3 are typical beasts that are some number of levels higher than you. They have increased health, and cannot be crit to death, but they can be maimed.
Fight 4 is a special set of beasts that are a little tougher and usually have some unique abilities. Same rules apply, higher level, increased health, etc.
Fight 5 is a Champion. Usually a humanoid, they are very challenging, higher level, and usually have some number of abilities. Depending on the race/class, they can have extremely high health pools. They can also be maimed but not crit killed.
Starting about 2 1/2 minutes into each round, traps will start springing around you, causing damage and wounds. They get stronger and more frequent as you get closer to the 5 minute timer.
If you win, you receive a prize package with bloodscip, 1000-2000 coins, and a randomly generated piece of loot. Some are enhancive. We've seen some pretty decent things generate. Typically winning ASAP is around 125 bloodscrip, drawing out the last fight 145ish, trying to maximize anywhere from 165. Our current record is 206 I think.
If you hit the end of the timer, you get a package with some bloodscrip. I only timed out on the champion, and got ~100 bloodscip.
If you surrender, you get a prize package with about half that in bloodscip and no piece of loot.
Die and you get about 50 bloodscrip and no package.
Dying will not strip your spells, and you'll be healed exiting the arena win/lose/draw.
Logs to come as soon as I can get them scrubbed.

Looking forward to this, sounds like to max you need to hold off your kill sometime after the traps set off, after gauging their approximate HP after a few runs.

Log of the first fight (Level 70 Warrior):
You hold out your dueling slip and an arena guard takes it, escorting you into one of the available arena.
[Duskruin Arena, Dueling Sands]
Spikes protrude outward from the crumbling stone walls that encircle the arena. A thin layer of sand covers the cavern floor, which has been stained with blood and littered with debris. Long shadows twist and turn, cast from the flickering fires high overhead, adding to the considerably oppressive atmosphere in the arena.
Obvious exits: none
An announcer shouts, "Introducing our new combatant, Vorks the Drinking Master, hailing from Wehnimer's Landing!"
>get my wara
You draw a double-bit hefty eonake waraxe from one of the weapon loops sewn inside of your thick woolen cloak.
An announcer shouts, "Vorks, you will have five minutes to slay each beast that enters the arena. There are a total of five rounds to make it through!"
You become solid again.
An announcer shouts, "You may use whatever means possible to do so. Some beasts may feign death and give the assumptions they have dropped dead, so be sure to keep a watchful eye on them!"

An announcer shouts, "Give us a good show, but be careful lingering too long. You will earn more bloodscrip the longer you last each round, but our beasts are trained to work better under pressure!"
An announcer shouts, "Combatant Vorks, prepare yourself for battle! Good luck and Godspeed. At any point you can surrender, but I would not recommend it if you want to be a champion!"
An announcer shouts, "FIGHT!" An iron portcullis is raised and a spotted tri-toed tegu enters the arena!

So is this a fully automated event? Will it be constantly available or is this just a limited time thing?

I don't think I missed weekends only but there was mention of live next weekend.
I assume it will be fully automated, once the kinks worked out. Possibly restricted by cooldown or in the Simustore as needed?

It's fully automated. I think the plan is to start on scheduled weekends and see what happens.
The place will have 200 arenas. The 201st person I think gets blocked from entering I think until a arena frees up. We tested this with 25 in Plat.

Is this all about armed combat or do I have a shot at this as a smite cleric? Those nervestaves get pretty expensive, As much as I'd like a high-end staff, I'd want that thing to jump back in my harness if I get disarmed before I'd spend that kind of money.

Our casters were doing just fine, though there are no undead for smite. They have lots of HP and pretty rough AS (though sometimes they spawn with dumb weapons like cudgels or rapiers). Really, the name of the game is control since they have relatively low DS and tons of health. I'm sure web or unbalance or something like that would work, but hopefully a caster will weigh in with details.

Vorks touched on the arena but didn't really go into the sewers.
The sewers, which require a rat token rather than a duelling slip, is an addictive little treasure hunt game. You get roughly 10-12 searches in the sewers. Most of the time you will find a bloodscrip parchment worth around 7 to 15 bloodscrip, with most in the 9-11 from what I've seen. About 20% of the time you will find a random item instead. These items are weapons, armor, shields or jewelry items generated by the treasure system. We have found some pretty fantastic stuff this weekend. My personal stash includes a 6x golvern morning star, a piece of jewelry with +13 pick pockets bonus and another bonus and a runestaff I plan to orb later with I think +13 Dex and +10 strenght (I want the dex). I have heard of others finding weighted and padded and sighted stuff both temporary and permanent. That said I've also found a haon light crossbow, 0x with nothing special.
On top of that you can, with a little luck or persistence, find one of the feisty pet rats that were teased by another plat player. These little guys were designed by the amazing GM Keios and they are quite a bit of fun. She really outdid herself on them.
I'm going to be honest with you all. I don't pay for mini quests and I won't pay for this. I simply do not like paying beyond my subscription price for mini events like this but that is my personal choice. With that said I have had an absolute blast this weekend between the sewers and the arena. I think the experience is worth the very low cost (we've been told somewhere around 100 simucoins per entry I believe) if you aren't taking a moral stand against that sort of thing. Just remember before entering the sewers casino to set a limit for how much you want to bet with. It really is addicting.

Can one of you ask if they mean to put tokens for this game in the treasure system? Also, are runs of this game unlimited on the weekend?
Roblar

Done
I couldn't wait till mid-week :)
Couple questions, will tokens to the ratacombs or arena be dropped into the treasure system? I think that doing so would make regular treasure hunting more exciting and provide a tease what is reported to be an addictive game, drawing traffic to the Simustore as well.
Also, are runs of this game unlimited on the weekend?

Prediction - wrong!
>>Couple questions, will tokens to the ratacombs or arena be dropped into the treasure system? I think that doing so would make regular treasure hunting more exciting and provide a tease what is reported to be an addictive game, drawing traffic to the Simustore as well.
I don't want to spoil it. But remember RtCF? Yeeeeah!
>>Also, are runs of this game unlimited on the weekend?
Right now, I need to focus it on my schedule to keep an eye on things. So weekends will be when it initial runs. We can keep it open longer once we've determined things are stable for Prime's player base.

As far as i'm concerned, pretty much everything in the Simucoin store should be automated drops in the treasure system. That doesn't mean frequent, just that a GM doesn't need to load them each time. Hopefully that's the case.
I'm happy Duskruin will be available via the treasure system. This help allay the concerns of those looking to enjoy these events without investing RL dollars.

Depends on the frequency.
If it's RtCF "lullz. opened 50k envelopes", i still maintain they can go fuck themselves.
If it's something closer to the shitty simucoin store drops no one cares about, that's a little better. "You currently have 20 enhancive pauses available.", but still mostly bullshit.

It's kinda funny how some people think all new content should be free cause they pay a subscription.
Was Warlords of Draenor free to existing subscribers?
Lets look at a F2P game.. like DDO, They require people to pay for a bunch of their new content.

I think this is a neat idea. The price to enter.. seems reasonable so far, we will see based on actual item prices. The fact that you can earn access for free randomly, not bad.
On a Rough guess.. avg 140 tickets a run, and it will take about 360 runs for the 50k runestaff. Or what, 360 bucks? MUCH more expensive then a "random" auction ticket.. but you would likely end up paying a lot more then 35 million for the slot at a service festival, or in an auction. Not to mention random other loot. I am sure out of 360 runs, a person would earn a few items that could sell for a shiny silver.
Also.. your bolded statement would make sense if they were charging 50 bucks to be able to use a new CMAN, or Sorc spell.

In both the Duskruin Arena and WoW arena/BG you are playing for the chance to win an in game currency of some sort then use that in game currency to purchase items and loot.
You know.. if you could enter the arena for free, you basically should just be handed a rot runestaff, and any other gear you want and clapped on the back.

I missed a bit but going back and reading that Blizzard and Simu are incomparable is fair.
If anything, Simu being compared to any modern game is a bit much, all things considered. Sure those modern games may lack an RP front but if you dig a little, you can find one. Does that really allude to being worth $15 a month though? Kind of feels like a hollow argument. Don't get me wrong, I have had some great times RPing with folks but that was when I finally got past the cliquish heavy atmosphere.

Scenario A
Every run costs $1.
Ten people run ten times each.
You get $100.
Scenario B
The first three runs are free, every subsequent run costs $1.
Those ten people still run ten times each.
But now twenty more people try it out.
Of whom ten only run the free ones and ten run ten times.
Potato clock.
You get $140.
For a fully automated system, you don't have to worry about increased staff time for running the quests. The only thing you have to worry about is apparently the total number of people in the system, and if Gemstone can have 200+ people logged in at a time JUST to play this mini game, Simutronics is going to be very happy.

Just like in life, I think we feel pressured to have the nice items, because other people do. Some people like to play games to be the most powerful <insert class/race> ever! It's like the whole premise of WoW. Ever just stroll through one of the major populated cities and see someone decked out in top gear on their one of a kind mount just sitting in the middle of the busiest pathway in the game?
GS is certainly no exception to this. Sure it may not be required to have all of that awesome gear, it's not required in WoW either, but nonetheless people still enjoy collecting all of the uber gear. Just check out the GS related threads on this very forum; how many of them pertain to awesome items, how powerful their character is in combat, spells, skills, classes, etc etc and how many of them are talking about roleplaying?
I'm willing to bet the ratio is 1 billion to 1 in favor of the non-roleplaying talk and Simu knows this which is exactly why they keep making these things cost money.
Thondalar
03-09-2015, 08:13 PM
Just like in life, I think we feel pressured to have the nice items, because other people do.
Just like in life, I think that applies to some people...we're all motivated by different things. For some, it is the "keeping up with the Jones'" mentality....we have to have a 10x perfect MCW lance because we saw someone else with one and thought it was the coolest thing ever. I think the vast majority of us, to varying degrees, just like to have nice things. Thondalar's entire outfit is custom altered for him, all of his containers are max light/deep (using the old rules, thankfully)...but I don't have any epic deepened stuff. I use a "nice" lance and "nice" armor, but neither is padded or weighted over heavy or enchanted over 7x. Could I afford these things? Sure. I could also afford a new lease on a Mercedes every year. Do I do that? No. I drive a fully functional car that is in good working condition and has been paid for for 5 years now. In neither scenario do I feel "pressured" to get nicer stuff. I have what I like.
Some of my alts have really nice gear, compared to Thondalar's "vanilla" stuff, and that's by design...I have a level 27 warrior with almost 300m worth of gear. Why? Because he has a very particular race/build that's kind of hard to pull off without nice gear. It's more to just experiment with new things and find new avenues to explore the game and the character creation.
But be honest, if you just had plain 4x/5x inexpensive gear, you could still do just fine in game and still actually be playing.
Totally. Some classes can do it easier than others, but for the most part, you could get into plain 5x gear for a few hundred K and augment it with some statues or scrolls or imbeds and be just fine even post-cap. But honestly, unless you're just blowing all your money on the ponies constantly, or selling your silvers off every time you get a 10m chunk, there's no reason you wouldn't eventually upgrade your gear as you have money to pay for it.
But if what you enjoyed about the game was having uber gear, then yeah, that costs money, you're right.
Well, not really...besides the sub price, I suppose. Tying this in with the quote you originally quoted, from SashaFierce, that the only way to obtain nice items was to pay $75 for a festival ticket...that's completely bogus. I was dealing in high-end gear back when I was on a standard account before going to any paid events...hell, my first paid event I bought the tickets with money I got from selling gear. The more correct statement would be "the only way to obtain nice items with minimal effort" is to pay for it.
While it's true that most paid events are money makers (I don't think I've made less than 50m each from the last 6 EGs), even that takes work. Plenty of people pay for tickets to events and don't get anything out of it. Like anything else, you get back what you put in. Personally, I prefer to make my own nice gear, but that does indeed take time and money for events in order to get services needed to make nice gear. Alternately you could buy PP from trusted sources for certain jobs, but a lot of services can only be obtained at these paid events. If you're ok with having other people make nice gear and you just buying it, there are always tons of nice things for sale here on the PC or on the merchant channel in-game. All you need to do is be creative enough to figure out how to make silvers to buy the things you want. There are innumerable ways to accomplish this without buying a single paid event ticket.

I'm with Thondalar on this, nice gear is fun, but it isn't the end all be all. I use a 4x runestaff most of the time and I do have HCP armor, but I don't need 10x to be effective, I'm using 8x right now. The only item that I ever really noticed that had a dramatic effect was FGB, and that's only like 4x. I used that for years until I was gone for a while and then came back a few years ago, and got some higher enchant. In fact, I was blown away by how much gear was out there because of all those Droughtman's runs. FGB really lost it's luster the few years I was gone.

One of the biggest reasons I quit playing is because I felt like it kept costing more and more money to do the things I enjoy in the game. I wanted to have nice items, but the only way to obtain them was to pay $75 for a festival ticket.
Just pay $1500 to a player, instead!

Some are. Check out Ardwen's Stuff thread. He can buy a car with his proceeds.

Easily. Ardwen just sold about $14,000 worth in the last two weeks? Something like that.
