I'll admit it, I wasn't fast enough on the refresh and click last night and now am left with 150k scoins on my account. The properties sold out in seconds. I know I paid a lot of money for a chance at something, but knowing there's a chance I might not be fast enough on the refresh and click next time is disheartening. Simu now has my money and I may not get a property for some time (if at all). I'll chalk it up to a lesson learned and will steer clear on future high-priced and extremely limited items sold from the simucoin store.

And that is the exact reason people were upset about it being a "refresh fest" and "the fastest fingers win" thing. And why people asked what would happen if they bought the coins and didn't get it. They said no refunds and you would be stuck with the coins.

It isn't like people were hiding the fact that they wanted to know the overall risks. I mean even people here were saying things like "If you don't get your house I guess you can just buy potions and sell them.". Additionally, Solomon made it sound like there would be big announcements when these things went up for sale. It sounds like the most recent two were not like this.

So what if you were someone who had paid your 1k, missed the click fest, and then also missed the second release? You would be even more pissed off that you didn't even get a chance to buy round two. So while I understand Simu working with players that should have just been the message from the start. To APK's point, it would have accurately gauged interest and given them some idea of how many people wanted these things.

Edit: On an unrelated note, GM run weddings used to be fairly expensive and required a lot of alterations/QC right? How did they handle signups for that back in day when they came out? I would assume lots of the more wealthy people tried to sign up right away?

A few months ago someone was bragging on the official forums that during the CCF event (whatever it was called) when silvers were selling for 14 dollars per million he was afk scripting 24/7 and made 1000 dollars a month per character and no one even batted an eye at his comment. And people call me a bad guy. I didn't even make 1000 dollars per character per year when I was "afk" scripting.


I really don't stand the outrage here. The only concern one should have about them opening additional slots is if you were one of the first 2 buyers and you think adding more will slow the creation of your purchase. Otherwise, why complain?

I suppose it all comes down to quality, but it's an interesting question to think about. I wonder if events like the krolvin ship thing are bigger money makers. Events like the last RtCF make bank, but I think they cost dollars in the long run too, since a major force in why people play the game is that they have goals to achieve. Simu has never been good at the long term. That's why there's no real dev, and only 200-300 logged in at peak or whatever it is instead of 600+ i'm entirely confident they could have maintained with even a little foresight.

I disagree. I'd love to see an estimate of GM man hours to code, QC, and run a festival like Ebon Gate. This is of course setting aside any and all new products/services which are released in support of this festival.

With events light Droughtman's Run and the Krolvin ship, I believe we're starting to draw closer to actually getting a high dollar amount for GM hours, but you're still releasing many items and silvers into the game. You are also spreading out your income from these festivals over a greater period of time. These home sales are an instant 1.2k

We'll never have access to their numbers or workloads so it's all speculative, but I just don't see anything as competing with a service that can likely be banged out in a week raking in 1,200 dollars.

Hell, for Ebon Gate auctions I think property deeds were actually 1 of 100+ items released to support the event.

I'm not sure how involved you are in MHO/CHE's, but the nexus services, house improvements, and MHO structures were often built by a very small amount of GMs, often at a fairly quick turnabout. I think once you have the hang of these things, it's copy/pasting descriptions and messaging into a script.

I think it's worth noting that the annual subscription fee is the biggest cash gainer for SIMU.

All of this stuff pales in comparison, even a $1000 purchase of a private property. Also, this little cash grab will reach its limit before too long. They'll run out of people willing to pony up a grand for a text home before long. In part because it's non-transferable. Unlike most stuff in GS, you can't sell a text home to someone else and at least break even or turn a profit.

Also, for the record, I'm not at all against this, so long as they don't entirely flood the landscape with these things, but I think that won't be an issue, not at this price point.

Yes. I know of several people who have quit over this. Not just because of the houses, that was just the last straw in a long string of Simu putting more and more resources towards paid shit and less and less resources towards developing shit.

Like I said in another thread; GS supposedly had at one point 150 GMs. This was many years ago. While I'm sure there was paid shit back then it was nothing compared to what the game has now. The game has more resources devoted to paid shit than at any time in the past and the game has far fewer GMs, 60 I think? Which is probably the fewest number of GMs ever on staff, or close to it at least.

So fewer GMs yet more resources going towards paid shit means less people working on development. Maybe you still enjoy what is already in the game so you don't understand why people are upset that less development is being done. That's fine. To some of them the only thing they have to look forward to is more development and when they see more resources going towards paid shit that they don't care about it makes them wonder why they are still playing this game if they are unlikely to see development that they want.

Like I said in another thread; GS supposedly had at one point 150 GMs. This was many years ago. While I'm sure there was paid shit back then it was nothing compared to what the game has now. The game has more resources devoted to paid shit than at any time in the past and the game has far fewer GMs, 60 I think? Which is probably the fewest number of GMs ever on staff, or close to it at least.

So fewer GMs yet more resources going towards paid shit means less people working on development. I disagree. I'd love to see an estimate of GM man hours to code, QC, and run a festival like Ebon Gate. This is of course setting aside any and all new products/services which are released in support of this festival.

With events light Droughtman's Run and the Krolvin ship, I believe we're starting to draw closer to actually getting a high dollar amount for GM hours, but you're still releasing many items and silvers into the game. You are also spreading out your income from these festivals over a greater period of time. These home sales are an instant 1.2k

We'll never have access to their numbers or workloads so it's all speculative, but I just don't see anything as competing with a service that can likely be banged out in a week raking in 1,200 dollars.

Hell, for Ebon Gate auctions I think property deeds were actually 1 of 100+ items released to support the event.

I'm not sure how involved you are in MHO/CHE's, but the nexus services, house improvements, and MHO structures were often built by a very small amount of GMs, often at a fairly quick turnabout. I think once you have the hang of these things, it's copy/pasting descriptions and messaging into a script.

Another thing to consider is that there is a very strong percentage of the regular populace that gets awesome things just to hoard them, for whatever reason. I know for a fact that they keep track of what "awesome" items are in the game, and where they are...you have to keep in mind that the current GMs were almost all players once, and have been around as players just as long as we have, and know what goes on. A ton of awesome shit went out during the last CCF, but probably half of it will never see the light of day.

We have to understand that the people putting the most money in to this game are different from your average person dropping $150 on a "free" MMO and then not playing after 6 months...the core supporting this game has been here for years. And years. Paying for multiple premium accounts faithfully every month. The events make the money they're slated to make....consider that most of the "coding" involved in running an event like Ebon Gate only needs to be done whenever they change venue...which only happens every several years. The vast majority of the areas are already done, they just "turn them on"...I liken it to our Paupers Haunted House every year. The coding for that was done years ago, the current GMs just "flip the switch" to change the room descriptions and interactions in all 100+ rooms of Paupers. Laying the ground work takes some time, but once it's done, it's done.

The code used for "creating" gemstone is rudimentary and advanced at the same time. Your copy/paste assumption isn't too far off, but it's actually easier than that in a lot of ways, depending on the task at hand. There is still only one MHO guru, and that GM does all of that stuff for all the Houses, and is able to do it pretty quickly in the vast majority of cases.

Accounts open and close all the time. Long-term players leave every month. I think the more important thing to consider is, who gives a shit?

On the outside, we can assume (rightly so) that Gemstone has a comparatively small player base in general. The logical conclusion there would be that losing the income from 7, 15, 30 accounts would hurt them. We know from the data we've collected that the average of logged-in players has dropped overall in the last 2 years, but not by a statistically significant amount. I think the thing to consider here is that the people leaving, when they announce they're leaving, is a known quantity...we can look directly at it and say "ok, there's X accounts no longer being paid for".

What we can't see is how many new accounts are made. We assume this number is low, because it's a (lol) text MUD in 2015. I personally know of three actual completely new accounts attached to completely new players that have already paid for at least the next 6 months. While this, in and of itself, is statistically insignificant, it speaks to the fact that the numbers we've tracked over the last 2 years follow a pattern....overall, holding steady.

This is just me, but, if I was Diethx's roommate, and I was party to her IRL sexual frustrations, be it through a wall or whatever else, I would drop the "no strings" offer on her.
