Actually, the Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey was pretty damn smooth.

For vodka, I just buy the cheap shit in the big plastic bottle for like $10. Crown Rosse or Skol or whatever. I use vodka for mixing, and it is just a waste of money to buy good shit for that.

My family has always been able to drink any and all liquor short one.

Jim Beam. For some unknown reason, any male in the last four generations, including myself, and my brother ESPECIALLY, will vomit upon drinking it. My dad's the same, his dad's the same, and his dad's the same. No clue past that, as I have not asked.

So my favorite thing to drink is anything but that.

I'm trying to decide between knob creek and makers mark for a gift, I'm pretty sure MM is the preferred but I'm not sure.

As I recall, Maker's is a touch sweeter than Knob Creek - it has no rye in it, so Knob Creek might be better for making cocktails with a rye profile, like a Manhattan. But they're essentially in the same band of bourbon and you can't go wrong with either. Some people have a personal preference, neither is a mistake. Maker's also has the advantage of a nicer bottle design than Knob Creek, I guess.

For a gift, go with the blind nationalism theme, or the prettiest bottle. People just want to believe, give them what they want. All the hipsters were depressed when they learned that most of the local small batch boutique whiskeys they were raving about were all made at a giant factory in Indiana, and bottled in pretty glass bottles.

That said, my weird brand loyalties are
- Bushmills 21 straight
- Crown Royal for mixing , pretty bottle and little velvet bag.
- Mount Gay dark rum for fruity drinks, because I once toured the plantation place.
- Bombay Gin, because it has all the same herbals without being stupid expensive.
- Cheapo Vodak, it's freaking ethanol and water, and you're going to mix it, right? I'll occasionally spend the extra buck and get a pretty bottle of cheap vodka.

All this, and I probably have one or two drinks a month.

I do not like the blossom of melted ice. Stones seem like a possibly good idea. I've also heard good things about the ice spheres melting very slowly. I haven't bothered to check the science of that claim.

Spheres minimize the ratio of surface area to volume.
A cube with side length 1 has a volume of 1 cubic unit and a surface area of 6 square units. Ratio of surface area to volume: 6.
A sphere with radius .62 has a volume of 1 cubic unit and a surface area of 4.8. Ratio of surface area to volume: 4.8.
4.8 is about 80% of 6. The area where warm water can interact with ice is smaller by 20% even though the volume of ice is the same.
However, ice cubes tend to not be cubes and they assume progressively rounder shapes as they melt. The difference in time to being fully melted will not be 20%, and could be a good bit smaller.

My brother owns a few sets of special glasses. He too, has notions of concern for the 'blossom' of melting ice. He has glasses that have a small fan at the bottom that continually shifts the liquor and the growing amount of water to be properly mixed in the alcohol while being drunk. It's actually quite nice, and offsets the distaste of a watery sip in a particularly good brandy.

I thought they were neat because (other than being a d20) they do have that roundish shape like the whiskey sphere icecube tray things I've seen. My only concern is the "blossom". I tried to observe him drinking last night but he had wine, not whiskey lol. Whiskey is only for when he (rarely) loses in his hearthstone league lawl.

Glad to hear most people drink it straight anyways, it seems. They make the cute tiny bottles of Makers and Knob Creek so i might just do a little variety thing. I once made a valentine a "box of chocolate" with nips in it. I think it is a pretty clever idea---but I feel weird reusing an idea from a previous v-day. IT WAS SO SMART THO.

Blanton's is probably the best bourbon I've ever tasted. For something unique, Basil Haden's is awesome. Otherwise, if you're looking for something priced along the lines of Makers and Knob but better tasting, Jefferson's and Woodford Reserve are both good.

For vodka, Reyka is amazing. No kick whatsoever, so if you're a straight vodka martini drinker, you'll be hard pressed to find better.

For gin, they're all so different that personal taste makes the biggest difference. Personally, Sapphire always worked for me, and Hendricks is good, as well (though I have a hard time calling it a true "gin" when the flavor profile is nothing herbal or spice, and is instead rose and cucumber; it's incredibly smooth, however, so even if you hate gin, it's something you might enjoy).

I've always been partial to the Glenmorangie's for scotch, but Oban, Laphroaig (if you like smoky scotch) and Balvenie have all stood out as particularly good.

I can't not love Jameson for whiskey. Easy, smooth, drinkable.

Rum is whatever. I don't care much about liquor I have to mix to enjoy.

You're over-thinking this. Bacon, on a plate, still on the paper towel you used to blot the excess grease. Perfectly adequate. If you want to get all fancy, you could cut the paper towel into a heart shape.

Heart shaped roses are mean. They will inevitably lead to the comparison of "I spend hours dwelling, nay obsessing on every aspect of your gift" vs. the "I bought you these grocery store flowers and chocolates on my way home." Why are you trying to start a fight!?!?

Tullamore Dew is a true irish whiskey, if you're into that. Pretty excellent.

Stoli for vodka. Period.

Hendricks/Sapphire for gin.

People are gonna laugh, but Jose Cuervo Reserva del la Familia is phenomenal tequila. About 150 a bottle.

Amaretto sours are pretty good, I just don't favor the slightly syrupy consistency of them.

For vodka: Cîroc (French, made from grapes) and Zubrowka (bought outside the US)

Why? Cîroc is extremely clean and pure tasting. As to the bison grass, it's good anyway and has a distinct flavor: good on ice or even with apple juice (which is odd for vodka)

I don't drink liquor anymore. After the 2nd blackout, the smell of any alcohol content over wine (which I dislike as well) makes me gag. I stick to beer these days, and very little of that too.

I've never really been much of a drinker. 2 beers and an hour later and my hangover starts. If I'm not basically matching beer with water, I'm accruing a debt that will be hell to pay later.

Much rather just smoke weed... lots and lots of weed.

Beer is my favorite, especially double hopped IPAs and stouts -- I've been loooving Big Elm Milk Stout. More than one or two beers and I feel really sick though. This goes for most booze, JUST GETTING OLD I GUESS. CANT DRINK LIKE IM FIFTEEN ANYMORE.

Being from a region with a lot of good community but less in the way of refinement you might not understand the Derby Day Julep.

This is perhaps the greatest mixed drink recipe ever.

What gross shit did you drink in college/adolescence/wheneveryoudrankshittybooze?

I didn't much like beer as a Freshman in college and played drinking games with "mixed" drinks. Needless to say, I have had blackout nights on all the major alcohols and don't drink them much anymore. I'm primarily a craft beer guy.. but one of my new years resolutions was to drink red wine. Been drinking a glass or two most nights... but still mostly ignorant on the subject. So far, my favorite wine has been 14 Hands 2012 Merlot.

ETA: Worst gross shit I drank was a NY Brand called "Pub Club" They made every hard stuff type.. and it was all really, really bad.

Vodka & Red Bull. To this day if I drink or even smell a Red Bull I'm reminded of it.

Also my roommate was really into Bacardi Ice so he'd always buy that. I think they're called Bacardi Breezers now.

I'm a bourbon man myself, and I usually go Wild Turkey. Yeah yeah, redneck hillbilly blah blah...Wild Turkey actually has some pretty fine bourbon. The 101 and Rare Blend can punch you in the throat pretty hard, but the regular 81 proof is my usual go-to for shots between beers.

If I'm just looking for a scotch to sip on, I go Johnnie Walker. The rule of thumb with Johnnie Walker is black for normal consumption, blue for special occasions, and red for never.

That's actually pretty funny, I just had a co-worker suggest monkey shoulder to me a couple days ago. Haven't tried it yet, but it's on my to-do list.
