I've never been interested in the games, but the lore for the Warhammer universe seems awesome. I like the story of the Emperor of Mankind. Is there a series of novels revolving around him, or is there a better starting point for the books?

I've been waiting my whole life for someone to ask something like this.

For starters you could read this entry.

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Emperor_of_Mankind

Book wise there aren't any that revolve around him. He rarely appears in the stories due to certain circumstances. I would recommend reading the Horus Heresy line however.

There is a series where one of the Emperor's sons gets a pear of anguish stuffed up his ass in graphic detail.

That wasn't wuite the LOTR.

Eh. Good enough.

Thanks tapatalk.

The Emperor is best seen far off. I'd suggest starting with the Imperial Guard and expanding from there.

A good place to start with IG would be the Gaunts Ghosts series. Me personally I started with the Omnibus books. Space Wolves, then Ultramarines and the Grey Knights. After that I started the HH series.

Yeah, I'd probably go with Gaunt's Ghosts.

Here's another avenue in.

Alright. I'll check that out.

If you like Starship Troopers then definitely give Warriors of Ultramar a read. Its like ST on steroids and crystal meth. And crack.

Doesn't that one start in the middle of everything?

I'd start with the first of the Gaunt's Ghosts or maybe Eisenhorn series. The Caiaphas Cain series is like 40k Flashman and worth a read too. For a standalone, Titanicus is probably my favorite 40k book.

Really, you can't go wrong with Abnett, McNeill or Mitchell. Counter is also usually good.

I'd like to read in some semblance of chronological order, unless that doesn't matter for some reason.

Doesn't really matter all that much. But if you want to anyways then absolutely Horus Heresy. The first 4 books will tell you all you need to know.

Whatever you do, do not buy the Wh40k ebooks on Amazon. They are not official and generally suck donkey balls. Black Library has their own site where they sell ebooks.

Of course, the physical books sold on Amazon are just fine... Just make sure the publisher is Black Library.

Or you could torrent the ebooks because fuck GW.

If you were a dirty thief that doesn't want to support the creation of books and lore for a series he professes to love, sure.

Shit. GW exploits customers even more so than Simu.

I hardly think the writers of the books exploit customers.

I wouldn't start out with the HH series. There are a lot of references you'll miss, and it's much more satisfying to read them when you've got a better grasp of stuff.

Yeah well you probably shouldn't read it because it's like Descent of Angels in that it shouldn't have been part of the HH series.

This was going to be a rep but it came out too long.

On a date with Trisket, her skin so fair
Spots her cleavage; goddamnit, Jack, don't stare!

Dinner is lovely, it's going so well
Then his belly rumbles and starts to swell

The girl just smiles and says, "I'll give you a tip."
"Don't be embarrassed, just let her rip."

Then she grunts and groans as if she's been hit.
Oh dear lord, I hope she's not taking a shit!

All throughout the night he thought he'd want a kiss
But now there is a foul odor, something is amiss.

His date leans in close, red lips parted
"Oops," she says, "I think I've sharted!"

You are writing poetry to Tisket on PC? Is the world coming to an end???

Did you read False Gods yet?

I haven't. In the middle of a monkey study and the last semester of school. I thought I was supposed to start with Gaunt's Ghost.

No to GG. Don't listen to Fulgrim, he lies and can't be trusted.

GG is a really good intro into how the Warhammer universe currently is but if you want to see how it started I'd read at least the first few books of the Horus Heresy series like PK mentioned. It'll tell you how everything got to where it is for the Imperium.

Edit: Almost forgot, for the love of god do not read the Squad Broken fanfiction.

A lot of good suggestions here, but I really liked 15 Hours for insight into the life of the common guardsman. Also, be sure to get the xenos perspective with Fire Warrior and Path of the Warrior.

You should probably just go listen to old episodes of Code of the Woods and enjoy Rogue Trader Tavern. The first couple episodes are meh, but after that they really pick up. Plus I wrote them, so there's that.

The first season of RTT is on there (the first episodes are kind of silly but after we put a real storyline in place, the finale is fucking epic). Season 2 only made it until episode 3 until my partner on the show had a baby so we've been on hiatus. We're recording our first show back tomorrow. Not sure if we'll be back on a regular schedule, but in any event our goal is to keep releasing episodes of RTT even if it is only mini-series style, a long episode every few months or so.

The show itself (36 episodes) is random nerd shit, 40k, D&D, video games, and some various random skits throughout. Sometimes I talk about gemstone. We even did some interviews at Gencon last August that I think are in there also, one with James Jacobs (various d&d titles, pathfinder, etc).
