just in case someone wanted to do the math.

x10 Tower shield (x2 shield) (x2 dodge) 125 bard ranks

or

x7 sonic tower shield (x2 shield) (x2 dodge) 125 bard ranks 101 air lore ranks.

Which gives more DS/bolt ds?

You do realize that a 10x small shield will give you more DS then a tower? 10x tower vs 7x sonic, of course the sonic. Penalty of -20% dodge DS or 50, .6 per rank or .375. That's 120 vs 75 for dodge DS, and that isn't counting dodge from mirrors because I'm too lazy to figure it out. Sonic with the lore is always going to give you the best DS, the kicker is you can't ensorcell your sonic gear. Bolt DS sonics wins even more because towers get a hefty bonus as does dodge. Too lazy to look that up and give you exact numbers though.

According to ;magic I am getting 113 dodge from tonis and mirrors. So I guess the bonus on dodge would be 415 total.

73 from 1019
40 from 1035

I always figured bolt DS would be higher with a tower than a small shield no matter what. Good to know that a small shield would give more DS though.

If its close maybe there would be times the 735'd x10 shield would be come in handy is what I was thinking.

Dodge DS:
Dodge Rank + AGL bonus + Trunc (Int bonus/4) = Base Dodge
((Base Value * Armor Hindrance * Shield Factor) - shield size penalty) * Stance Mod = Dodge DS
Shield Factors:
Tower .54 10
Stance Mods:
Offensive .75

Base Value: Shield Ranke + Trunc (STR Bonus/4) + Trunc (Dex Bonus /4)
((Base Value* Size Modifier * Stance Modifier)/1.5)+20 + Enchant Bonus

Tower 1.3
Offensive .5

are those the two formulas I will be using if I decide to plug in numbers?

You're a bard, with a sonic shield.

Sonic shields are different based on air lore. As you get more air lore, you can sing a higher tier shield, with less penalty. At 100 air lore ranks, the shield penalty is equivalent to a small when you sing a tower.

So you're comparing a .78 penalty on your dodge DS, regardless of small physical versus sonic tower, but on the dodge DS side, you're looking at a .85 modifier versus a 1.3 modifier. The only time these would be equal is if you were comparing 10x and 7x... and you had ~33-34 shield ranks. Any higher than that, the sonic will yield higher results.

Oh well I know this. I was completely immune to bolt and physical attacks self cast at x2 shield x1 dodge with a my sonic tower shield. But with a 735'd shield I might even be able to go self cast vs td in the OTF, but not the against sentries in nelemar.

This is a very different question than what was asked in the OP. Every question until now has been purely about DS maximization, not specific DS losses from sonic to physical to gain TD.

Shield ranks = 202

Dodge is going to be the same, due to sonic tower shield = small shield hindrance. So the delineation is in the Block DS equation

Offensive, against melee targets:

202*.85*.5 = 85.85/1.5 =57.2 for a Small shield
202*1.3*.5 = 131.3/1.5 =87.5 for Tower Shield

Static shield bonus of +20, with +15 for small shield enchant:
82.2 for Small Shield
107.5 for Tower Shield

Losing ~25 DS in offensive for converting to physical

Ranged DS Offensive:
Small: 202*1.2*.5-8 = 113.2/1.5 = 75.46
Tower: 202*2.1*.5+16 = 228/1.5 = 152
Static shield bonus of +20, with +15 for small shield enchant:
Small: 110.46
Tower: 172

Losing ~62 Ranged DS in offensive for converting to Physical
