Talk about a nail biter though. One of the best playoff games I've ever watched.

Best game I've ever seen in person. Will give Baltimore credit, they brought their A game. Lucked out (no pun intended) in not having to play Denver too. Luck might be playing better than Manning right now, but Denver has a muuuuuuuch better running game (Baltimore's gave us fits) and a better pass rush too. Pats match up really well with the Colts.

I don't know...we gave the Packers every chance possible to win that game and they still lost. Don't expect another four interceptions to help the Patriots.

Big deal or no?

Seems that the Colts would had lost anyhow, but I suppose 'it is the principle of the matter'.

Speculation = Kraft will fire Belichick if coaching staff responsible (after sticking with him after 'SpyGate')
Incidentally Goodell and Kraft are best buds, photos of pre-game party, and Kraft being a key supporter of Goodell.

Got my SB tickets!

Section 133, row 37.

Can't wait for the game. Hopefully this one will turn out better than the last time we played there. My thinking goes Detroit had a heartbreaking loss to Dallas, who had a heartbreaking loss to GB, who had a heartbreaking loss to Seattle...

First, they didn't cheat. They just exposed another stupid rule on the part of the NFL. The rules pertains to the air pressure two hours before the game. Two hours! Then they let the teams use any old ball they want (as long as it doesn't have corrugations.) They toss in a subjective proviso that the officials on the field can toss a ball if they don't like it.

Want a soft ball, use an old one, that rubbery material leaks. Any ten year old kid can tell you that. Heat the balls right before testing, to get them up to the minimum 12.5 pounds. Then wait. By game time, that ball is a squishy thing of beauty. Because science.

If they want the balls a certain pressure at game time, they should test them at game time, or just provide a big box of league scuffed balls at a set pressure.

Another rule is that the balls must be tested two hours before the game. This does not imply that the balls have to be at that pressure ONLY at testing, in the same way that your car has to have working tail lights at all times rather than only at inspection. Read (http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/rulebook/pdfs/5_2013_Ball.pdf) it for yourself.

Does it specifically say that it has to stay inflated? Get your imperfect tail light analogy out of my face. No one said ONLY. You're grasping. The tail light analogy is perfect for that reason. Nobody specifically says your tail lights have to stay working after inspection. The rule is "your tail lights have to work". Similarly, nobody specifically says the ball has to stay inflated after inspection. The rule is "the balls have to be inflated".

That you can read a rule that says "the ball shall be inflated (12.5 to 13.5 psi)", interpret that as "only at official measurement time", and accuse ME of grasping demonstrates pretty clearly which of us is the anti-, Auntie.

I'm not debating your crappy analogy. Link the actual law regarding tail lights, in each and every state, chart them out, and I suspect you'll see that the rules are far less ambiguous with respect to maintaining them in working order while on the road. I bet their are separate laws that discuss the period of time between inspections. Your analogy is crap.

The NFL rules state exactly what they state, you can interpret them how you like if it makes you happier, but there's a word for people who try to inflict their personal reality on others. But that doesn't change what they explicitly state. Shall be logically does not translate into shall remain, shall be maintained, it means shall be.

There has been zero information released on what temperature the balls were tested at later on.

JackWhisper
01-22-2015, 09:54 PM
Somewhere in this is a middleground that ought to be reached. Do any of you, who know that the Patriots AND Bellichick have a history of seizing any and all advantage, legally defined or not, if they can get away with it, think that this is the only thing they have done to try to eek their way into a win? Sportsmanship has it's place, sure, but if you need 10 inches, and you've got 10 slightly underhanded ways to gain an inch, you'd be using all 10 of those ways.

I got nothing for or against the Pats, the Hawks, or the Colts. Although the Colts oughta be ashamed at how their team worked together this year. Dogshit doesn't even begin to cover it.

The Pats, by proven history, repeatedly manipulate their environment to give them an advantage, in not-so-blatant ways that may or may not be against the rules, but are against the spirit of the rules. Penny pinch the logic if you want, but a fine is not enough, and a SuperBowl DQ is too much.

Middleground.

I say unto you that it is you who are the silly one. :)You should read the whole article you posted. It rules out the possibility of natural temperature change causing the amount of measured pressure loss.

I have no idea why you won't admit that I could be correct. Read my first post. I suggested multiple reasons why the ball could have naturally deflated. The article does indeed rule out that temperature change causing the full change. But surely you're aware of the concept of addition? It's pretty simple math, but I'll spell it out for you anyway. 1 + 1 = 2. So, what could possibly motivate you to make that statement? Did you think I'd forget that I posted a multi part theory? Were you hoping to score internet points with the audience trusting that they're too stupid to notice? Leak plus pressure.

You can type in caps all you want. I provided the article just in case anyone here didn't have a high school science education, and was unaware that pressure changes with temperature. I don't believe the NFL is unaware of this scientific tidbit. Thus, they would not have written a rule that the ball remain at a constant pressure, over the course of six hours.

Now, there still exists the possibility that they did cheat, they could have bribed an official, they could have paid the ballboys to deflate the ball with a mechanical device, Tom Brady could have been wearing a secret decoder ring with an attached needle. If you want to enlighten us with your theory of exactly how they cheated, please do so. If you don't even have a theory of how they cheated, then it's a bit weird to call them cheaters.

My debate with you is over. Now I'm just going to call you a dumb-ass, with no attempt to further my debate. You constantly obfuscate with bad analogies, changing the subject, creating straw men, presenting easy to believe lies, presenting illogical conclusions. Why do you do these things? Do you lack respect for your audience? Do you think we're all so stupid that you can put forth these kind of statements and we won't notice? You have your head up your ass in the real world. Please stop, it's not quirky and endearing, it's dickish.

So, Brady admits to liking a soft ball... so is it that difficult for people to understand that he probably instructs the ball inflation dude to only inflate the balls to 12.5lbs.. they are checked and verified by officials to be within specifications (which is inside a normally warm room) and when the balls are actually used during game time (outside where it's much colder), that inflation naturally drops (science) to where the balls are now below 12.5lbs. The officials ran the game for a full half before being told that the balls were "under inflated" and they handle the balls more than Brady does. How did they not notice how deflated these balls were?

People are making this a far bigger deal than it really is... probably the same people who would love to see the NFL knocked down a couple of pegs... or Raven and Colt fans...

Sportsmanship has it's place, sure, but if you need 10 inches, and you've got 10 slightly underhanded ways to gain an inch, you'd be using all 10 of those ways.Wrong.
Leak plus pressure.I don't know why you have this theory about internet points. When have I ever posted something that was well-received by the PC? My pharmaceutical analysis is universally distrusted, and my basketball analysis fares only slightly better. Anyway, to your point. All eleven balls simultaneously sprang leaks? In both the conference championship and the regular season game? But no other team has ever had a problem with leaky balls? Sounds like you're strainin' to do some explainin' to me.
Thus, they would not have written a rule that the ball remain at a constant pressure, over the course of six hours. They didn't. They gave an acceptable range.

The officials ran the game for a full half before being told that the balls were "under inflated" and they handle the balls more than Brady does. How did they not notice how deflated these balls were?As Ker_Thwap has proven, the temperature change was not enough to cause the observed pressure change. The relevant equation is the Gay-Lussac law: P/T = P/T. Keeping in mind that we have to convert to absolute temperature and pressure...

27.5 / 294 = 25.5 / x
x = 273 Kelvin
x = 32º F

It was in fact 50º F at the game, thus something more than temperature drop had to have happened. Also please note that this assumes the balls were inflated to the bare minimum 12.5 psi. If they were actually inflated to the average 13 or the maximum 13.5, the temperature factor is even less important.

Somewhere in this is a middleground that ought to be reached. Do any of you, who know that the Patriots AND Bellichick have a history of seizing any and all advantage, legally defined or not, if they can get away with it, think that this is the only thing they have done to try to eek their way into a win? I'm trying to avoid the media hype as we all know 1) these are the two weeks before the Super Bowl, and 2) these are the Patriots who unfortunately have a checkered history when it comes to these things and even if they didn't eveyone loves to hate the best. It's the perfect shitstorm. I'll wait until a verdict is reached.

Kerthwap - Latrin has never conceded in an argument so don't even bother. His logic is infallible.

I am glad Brady put himself out there and said he had no knowledge of this. So he's either clean or he's a liar. If he's a liar then I want nothing to do with him anyway so I'm glad there is a binary outcome. Doesn't change the fact that he's the GOAT, but I would be extremely disappointed in him as a person.

The silver lining is assuming he doesn't get suspended, Brady is likely to play between 30% and 50% better because of this. Nothing like Brady with a chip on his shoulder. I would not be happy about this if I was a Seattle fan, unless he gets suspended.

If he does get suspended, I'll be holding an auction for seven super bowl tickets.

Why do you insist on feeding the troll?

Here.. don't believe me... believe a physics professor.

A natural decrease in temperature would have caused the New England Patriots’ footballs to become under-inflated Sunday, a Boston College physics professor says. Michael Naughton, chair of the physics department at BC, said in a press release “it’s not possible for weather not to have played a role” in the DeflateGate controversy. He claimed footballs always lose or gain pressure depending on the conditions. “Say you inflate the ball to 12.5 PSI — the NFL minimum — in a room at 70 degrees, and then used the ball outside where it was 50 degrees. That 12.5 PSI would eventually become 11.5 PSI,” Naughton said. “If you inflate the ball to 12.5 PSI in an even warmer room where it was, say, 80 degrees, and then played outdoors at 40 degrees, that 12.5 PSI would become 10.5 PSI — a drop of two PSIs.” The temperature at kickoff Sunday in Foxboro, Mass., hovered around 50 degrees — not very cold, but presumably colder than the room in which the balls were inflated and checked by officials two hours before the game. As for the Colts’ footballs being within the legal PSI range, Naughton has an easy explanation for that, too: If those balls were more inflated to begin with (maybe even above the legal maximum), they could have lost air pressure and still stayed above the minimum. By the way, don’t accuse Naughton of being a homer, either: He’s a Buffalo Bills fan, according to the release, which means he’s also an expert in things falling under pressure in big games.

No doubt. Even if the score was close, it's still a fucking dumb controversy since it's been illustrated many times how this could happen.

And clearly it didn't make that big of a difference if the people who hold the ball more than anyone (the referees) didn't notice a difference until they were told at halftime.

What? Nonexistence? There hasn't been someone sporting that number on the Patriots since 1987.

They don't need a 12th man huh? I bet the owner would be really upset if the 12th man (ie the fans) said okay and all went away.

It wasn't even that bad of a throw, Butler was just moving faster than the receiver. Belichick will yell at him after the game for bringing it out to the two.
I was yelling at Tom for most of the game.

Win or lose, this was going down as one of the best super bowls in recent history. The refs didn't screw up anything critical, no cheap pass interference calls. Fun times.

Thondalar
02-01-2015, 10:32 PM
No idea what is going on, first thread I saw, but that was some bullshit. You've got arguably the best running back in the league, you're 2 yards from the end zone with potentially 3 tries...so you throw it? Seriously? This is bad on so many levels...let us totally ignore the fact that, empirically, running the ball with Lynch in that scenario is your best chance to score...let us also figure in the clock scenario. The quicker you score, the more time is left for the Patriots to mount some epic come-back. Passes are quick scores. Runs are slow scores. Runs might not make it the first time, but you have 2 more tries, and the clock keeps ticking. Passes stop the clock either way, at that point on the field. Either it's a TD which stops the clock, or it's an incomplete pass which stops the clock. Neither scenario was "best" on 2nd down at that point for the Seahawks.

IMO it's the single stupidest, most stupid, utterly stupid, stupid call ever in the history of the game. All previous successes should forever be overshadowed by this one stupidest call ever.
