Getting domain registration website when attempting to reach Krakii this morning. Didn't see any news post, but I've heard some talk around the water cooler about Simu trying to do something or other with Krakii sometime soon.

Anyone know anything, or is it just a local DNS issue on my end?

The person I talked with is a poster on the forums, so I won't state the individual's name, also I wasn't told too much.

I was talking with Goat's about merging his Melee Sorcerer info into my Sorcerer guide on krakii. While discussing my intent to write more guides, and spruce up some old ones (at least on the krakii side to properly reflect the posts on PC), I was told to refrain from updates for a little while.

I guess the fact that I even said this much means that I'm shitty with secrets :(


I was going to write up a newbie guide, as there's been a lot of buzz on the official forums from the GMs asking for what kind of advice they can offer new players. Plus, it's been about a year since I've written a guide

Just for the sake of clearing up some origin confusion:

GM Naos (Oliver) started Krakiipedia. Krakii is just the namesake since he (a player) always chimes in on the officials with things like "to my recollection those were sold in the herp derp shop at the blerp festival in 1992." My understanding was that it was a quasi-independent setup (who ever knows what that means, it always traced to a different hosting provider for what that's worth). His ability to do some back-end work is how the KP shops page was able to have something like 1hr updates and how it was able to display stacked quantities (and why the shops site became defunct after he stepped down). That's also why KP account names are the same as play.net account names. And presumably, that's why account creation is basically defunct now. Hopefully that's something that they're trying address by assimilating it? If something is happening, I hope it doesn't get messed up. In my personal opinion, it's probably the most important contribution to GS ever.

Who says they're buying it? Could just be transfer of ownership. Regardless, what they are doing is ensuring the availability of an important resource for the game. Also, if the website is GM run they can update it to a greater extent than non-GMs can. Think about the original playshops website. It was able to do what it did because it was in part GM run.

Now, what would be interesting is if they incorporated an official playershops search engine into krakiipedia.

69.163.160.164 is Dreamhost. I doubt Simu would pay Dreamhost to host that site when they have the technical people and hardware readily available in house.

It takes 24-48 hours usually for DNS to propagate around the world. That is the reason why changing the host file works. You are specifically telling your computer go to this IP when I use this domain name. If it ever changes in the future your host file will stop working.

The current name servers are

Name Server:NS1.EXPIREDDOMAINS.REGISTER.COM

So its going to just take a little while for it to update back to Dreamhost.

Did anyone contact Oliver or Krakii to see what they had to say?The hosts file tells your computer where to look for IP addresses. Right now it tells your computer to look to your provider's DNS server, which pretty much always works. If you put in the suggested line, it will tell your computer to look at that line ONLY for krakiipedia.org and continue using the DNS server for everything else. This lets you access krakiipedia.org while your DNS server is updating.

As Buckwheet says, in a couple days you should go back and take the line out, because the IP address is going to change again at some point in the future, and your computer will never look to the DNS server for krakiipedia.org until you take the line out.
