It was sarcasm.

Although I AM beginning to slightly doubt it's wordship.

It's gotta be man, don't you remember that childhood poem?

"Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider..."

Uhm, I think that's a childhood poem.

John is the stupidest guy I've ever met.
John is the most stupid guy I've ever met.

Sometimes you have to take the word in all three contexts to see which is right.

Stupider is a word.

Who is stupidest?

That just sounds dumb.

John is the stupidest guy I've ever met.

That sounds like you are 3.

I do not believe it is a word, sorry.

Sorta like ''ain't". It's pretty accepted, but it still isn't a word.

I'm just going with the two biggest dictionaries that I know of, and the majority of dictionaries that I found online. It is not a word.

It made it into a dictionary ... big whoop.

There are plenty of words in various dictionaries that have made it for one reason, popular lack of correct grammar.

Stupider is as much a word in the English language as the word "dawg".

In a few years "dumberer" will also be a word in an English dictionary. Doesn't mean anything other than the erosion of a language.

The rule was that most words with two syllables, and all words with more than two syllables, should be prefaced by "more". In recent times, that rule has been set aside and words like "stupider" are accepted. They are not preferred, but they are acceptable.

While looking for the answer to this question through Google I stumbled onto Klaive's other board (http://www.ninjachat.com/forum/)

<<There are plenty of words in various dictionaries that have made it for one reason, popular lack of correct grammar.>>

Does the language not evolve, making that the correct syntax?

Stupidier is not in either the oxford dictionary, nor the websters, case closed. As if the question even needing asking.

You're stupider than the average person if you don't think it's a word.

This helps out 0 because it's in some, and not in others.

If "stupider" was a word I may be insulted, as it isn't I am not. I think it has been used incorrectly for years by ignorant people and some dictionaries have pandered to the ignorant and included it. Whenever I have a question about the English language I go to those people who invented English. My Oxford dictionary British edition does not list stupidier, case closed.

Stupider is in my Oxford English (UK version of course) so I think we can safely say its a word.

Artha is wrong

Chadj is right.

Some (most) [all] girls are also retarded

Given the evidence, I would have to deduce that stupider is not a word.

I had a quick check, and my version of the Oxford dictionary of current English was edited by a male so... You lose. Thanks for playing though! ;)

Chadj

It was a female with a male name, OBVIOUSLY.

I did a search at onelook.com dictionary which searches up to 971 dictionaries and found stupider listed in only one dictionary, dictionary.com, as an adjective of stupid. It wasn’t listed in the either the Webster’s or Oxford there.

I stand by my initial statement that stupider is not a word. The correct way to articulate that sentiment would be “more stupid”, as in "anyone who thinks stupider is a word is more stupid than words can express".

Oh, because it's not on the internet version of the Oxford dictionary, it obviously isn't a word. Even though it's in the printed version.

xtc
10-17-2004, 04:31 PM
It isn't listed in my oxford nor my websters. I also asked an English teacher who scoffed at me derisively for asking....Man I have to much time on my hands.

Rule: One syllable words get -er, multiple syllable words get more.

Correct: More stupid
Incorrect: stupider
