What is the consensus on the appropriate level to start the various major projects for a generic enchanting build (1x Wiz / 2x Spell, 1x MIU/AS, +20 bonuses)

5x - 25?
6x - 40?
7x - 60?
fusion - 75?

I think 7 would be possible before that with that build, I am working on one at 50, one cast to go right now with no issues so far. As for fusion, not even close with that build, you need 150 ranks of MIU to guarantee to not fail the pre-temper pour, so 75 is possible with 2X MIU otherwise you will be failing pre-temper pours, which reportedly are not cheap. I could not say since I am not there yet.

You need about 160 ranks to pour 100% of the time but if you are willing to put up with failures on the pours you could start enchanting fusion sooner then that. Material is also a lot more important when doing fusion. As for just how early you could do fusion, I don't think anyone has done any extensive testing of the limits.

Not sure what makes that an enchanting build. What is "spell?" What is "+20 bonuses?"

For non-critical projects, my personal minimum skill set rule of thumb for non-fusion is the final bonus in wizard ranks (i.e 25, 30, 35) and twice that for fusion. This is with a bolting build: 1x HP (higher at lower levels), 2x SA/MIU/AS, ~0.75x wiz, 1x EMC/MjE/MnE.

I've done 3 recent 6x enchants (final step on the 4th project) without incident with a level 45 wizard with 32 in wizard base. I had some minor 6x fusion temper reset troubles on a level 75 wizard with about 55 in wizard base. Now above 60 wizard ranks, I've done two 6x fusion projects without issue. Haven't done 7x fusion yet. That said, I paid someone else to do the 6x enchant on my 3-slot fusion bow.

Recent success stories aside, I started enchanting with those rules of thumb and have completed many other non-fusion 5x, 6x, and 7x projects.

Successfully did a 7x enchantment on a blink weapon last week, 63rd level, 62 wiz ranks, 63 minor ele, 40 major ele, 2x in SA/MIU/AS, 50 ranks EMC

It's my pocket wizard and the goal is 75th level, so I can have 100% success on pre temper for fusion weapons.

Wouldn't hurt to add INT and LOG enhancives before your pour. Finding a +40 to INT set is probably the easiest early on.
