Anyone get it? There is a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth among users (3-5.5 Meatcritic, 'mostly negative' on Steam), but it's 70-80 among critics.
I really like the setting this time around, but I will probably wait for patches and sales to arrive before I buy it.
We were talking about review embargoes in another thread and this seems to apply:

I haven't played an AC since the first one. What is this, like number 7. Talk about milking a series as fast as possible.

You want to hear something funny? The 11th actually saw the release of two AC games - Rogue was the other one. I guess it's more like Black Flag except you play as a Templar in the North Sea. It's only on 360/PS3 right now, but will be coming to PC next year. It's actually reviewing better than Unity.

I picked up Unity today and played about an hour. It is beautiful; the graphics and setting are great. I played a few of the previous AC games and my trick was to never sit down with them for more than an hour or so. They're repetitive games and more fun when you break them up a little. After the non-story of Destiny, it was nice to actually see people's faces when they're talking to you.

I've always liked the Assassin's Creed games. Mainly being able to explore the historical aspects to them. Gameplay is really a non-issue since it's just about impossible to lose any actual fight.
Having said that... I'm usually a year or two late in buying the games when you can get them for a substantial discount. I'm actually just starting to play through the story in AC 3 right now.

I've played and enjoyed pretty much all of them, though. "Milking a series as fast as possible" has negative connotations that I just don't feel apply, they're consistently good games.

I've enjoyed all the AC games. Milking is what Battlefield and CoD do. AC is not even nearly equivalent to that.

I'm betting you are using a count from the AC wikipedia page, which lists handheld and little mobile games as well as a couple of cancelled titles.
If you want to view an awesome series of games in a negative light because they've also released a handful of stupid little phone games and stuff, well, more power to you I guess.

Even if you count the ones on consoles/pc you're still looking at 8. 8 in 7 years. Milked!

I call it milking when the games suck and it is just completely the same as prior ones. AC has good stories and tons of content that separate them. You wouldn't know this, because you only played one of them.

Yeah it's kind of crazy keeping up with Assassin's Creed titles. I'm not sure which one I played but it wasn't all that long ago and it seems like there have been 4 or 5 releases since then.

Good thing we aren't using your bogus definition. It has nothing to do with quality and everything to do with quantity.

His definition isn't the bogus one. Milking it is a negative comment. It's negative because it implies it's just the same old crap being churned out again and again.
AC games don't fit that at all. What, should they just not keep making good new games because you feel they should only release X games per Y years?

Black Flag, Unity, and Rogue were released a little outside of 1 year of each other. It's pretty damn crazy for 1 series to have 3 major releases in that short of time.

I don't care how many they make, how quickly. I'm not saying anything negative about the series. But if you think the franchise isn't being milked you are naive. It's a huge money maker for Ubisoft and they are going to, and have been, milk it for all its worth.

Your mileage may vary. I thought AC2: Revelations and AC 3 were mediocre at best, and storywise Revelations did almost nothing to advance the plot. Black Flag was great, but remove the ship portions and I think I'd like it a lot less.
As far as milking it, there have been 8 main series releases in 7 years. There have been some minor modifications but all in all the latest releases follow the same formula as the earlier releases. I enjoy the series but I can definitely see why someone would view it that way. Also,
Asked about future of the series, Sébastien Puel from Ubisoft said that "[...] we could do 35 of these [Assassin's Creed games]",[35] while Laurent Detoc from Ubisoft said "we hope to reach Assassin's Creed 10".[36]

I spent some time with AC:U this morning: played up to sequence 5 of the main story, ran a bunch of side missions, and tried three co-op missions with a friend. I'm having a lot of fun with it.
An online article has a tidy description of my most serious annoyance, "Assassin’s Creed: Unity is over-burdened with extraneous, poorly-implemented features which draw attention away from the gameplay itself, are difficult to use or in some cases just don’t work – namely the companion app, Initiates and microtransactions."

There's a lot of stuff in the game that is attached to outside applications that are not clearly explained and, if reports are to be believed, quite aggravating to work with.

Got it during the Steam sale and an hour or so in it's pretty good. There have been some graphical issues and character glitches but I really feel like I'm in Paris and just want to walk the streets between destinations rather than leaping rooftop to rooftop. Controls I can see becoming an issue because it feels like Arno is attracted to pots and crates and stuff and tries to jump on them when I just want to run by. I'm running it on high settings, but I've got a new GPU coming in for Christmas so I hope to get it up even higher.

From what I've read, in the most recent patch they rebuilt the entire city of Paris.

Yeah. Also if you bought the season pass before a certain time (it's no longer for sale at the moment), Ubisoft is giving you a free game as a way of saying 'we fucked up'. Hidden within the legalese of the license agreement is the promise you won't sue them for the launch condition of Unity, lol.

Playing co-op with randoms is like putting your balls in a grinder. At least you can solo those missions, but screw running them multiple times.

Nah, it's because people aren't even trying to do anything but muscle through objectives. They'll jump into a courtyard filled with guards, everyone in the area is alerted, then snipers start taking shots at you from offscreen. It doesn't help that Unity is absolutely packed with guards.

Big news: Initiate and Companion App content is now available to all players. No more sidegame bullshit.
