Why the preference for earrings plural over say a single earring or an earcuff?

Just curious. I know krakiipedia says that there are two earing slots, but I havent been able to wear more than one ear worn in any combinations ive tried.

my understanding is that you can wear one functional earring/earcuff and one functional pair of earrings plural. I've never actually seen an enhancive pair of earrings though. Doesn't make much sense but I'm just going off Krakii.
