I think you old timers will love this link. It shows a time of the beginning of the ICE age in '92 or so. Its quite interesting. (you might have to download the following link) http://www.geocities.com/gshistory/downloads/soulstea.txt

The link shows about a unique soul stealing blade, back when items like that were made readily.

Also, here's the webpage:

Enjoy !!

You forgot the /sarcasm, Celtar. I mean Backlash. No, I mean Celtar.

The roleplay was nothing special but the sense of community was rarely seen again, excepting a few short periods of time. I found something similar in Pinefar and Solhaven after they opened up and the initial crush was over. Those who decided to make it their home - especially Pinefar - had it close.

Note to those searching for a tight-knit community without wanting to shell out $50 extra a month: I've gone hours without seeing another person in Zul Logoth.

Heh. I hadn't seen Manny's page in years. I'd forgotten all about it. It does bring back some memories, eh? :)

I recommend Solhaven for the roleplay and community atmosphere but it can get a bit cliquish (sp?) and can be difficult for an evil character.

Edited to add: Nice page, btw. This shoulda been posted in the websites folder though, WC. ;)

I found a table at Frith's Inn with my other Multi-Accounted characters to be as tightly-knit as I needed it.

Indeed. Fairly good one. I'm a little sorry he never had a capture of my PC from back then. I'd be curious to see it again since Ravenstorm was quite different before the thaw. If I remember right, he was elven too. And hadn't acquired quite so many toys.

I remember the first time I tried out gemstone, back in the days when it was still free on AOL. (Circa 1990's) At the time, I had just rolled an empath as my first character and spent a good amount of time sitting in town square listening to lessons taught by Wisteria. Not knowing much of anytime, I often waundered and one time found myself stumbling about in the then very active thyrils. What an experience THAT beating was!

Another found memory was a 4th of july invasion of red and blue orcs dressed in various New English gear. (Think Patriots mascot).

Back then it seemed like *everyone* picked their boxes at the Tartifacts tables. Several times a day I'd make a raid through the abdoned boxes, finding zircons here and there, along with a few quartz's and corals. My first 10k was a fortune, and with it I bought a mithril sword I wasn't permitted to wield.

Ahh, the good 'ole days. Wisteria, I miss you!

Yeah. And one's monitor didn't self-destruct when one "looked" at him.

It went unlimited around Xmas of 96 or thereabouts.

Back in the old old days, there were no age limits on magic metals.

Actually there was. I forget exactly what the wording was, but when you tried to wield a weapon you weren't old enough for, it resisted your attempts and remained in your hands.

Actually there weren't. After they tried fixing it so you couldn't pick them up, you could always stand in your locker and equip any weapon you wanted. I hunted from ages 0-10 with a +20 greatsword.

Abusing a bug is completely different than there not being mechanics in place that did not allow characters to weild magical weapons prior to a specific level.

Yep, you just wouldn't get the full benefit of the weapon until you reached the approrpiate age. Much like how e-bladed arrows and archery work today.

I always thought that change was annoying, but I guess it helped stop the theft of weapons. I don't really see the point of the rule now.

Didnt see too much evidence of roleplay in the first log there, as the word "NPC" was used readily, that, and "rdy". I didnt catch onto this game until much later, of course. Very interesting read though, any other cool old GS pages out there?

92...wow. I didn't know it went that far back. I thought 94 for some reason.

Odd, I remember gaining the benefits. I'm 90% sure of this, but who knows, I am going back about 10 years.

Actually, 1992 was far from the "beginning of the ICE age"...GS3 was ICE from the beginning.

Also, that soul stealing sword you see was FAR from common...items of that nature were hardly "made readily". In fact, there was no such thing as "altered" equipment much less having a scripted weapon that was easy to get, rarely was there a merchant and everyone was running around in "heavy hide" which was storebought.

I love it when people don't know their facts and continue to talk about them as if they were there.

Warclaidhm aside, is my recollection off? Didn't you used to be able to use enchanted weapons regardless of age with a workaround?

If you're referring to the beginning of GemStone, you're still years in the future.

Yes you could.. but it wasn't a 'workaround' it was a simple bug that was abused.

What I was talking about was you could use any weapon regardless of age, but you'd only gain 2x your level enchant up to the actual enchant of the weapon.

I remember being really pissed when they changed it because I had just rerolled (for the umptieth time) and I couldn't use my mein falchion anymore.

Anyway getting altered stuff was tough, not like today. I got four items done the whole Ice Age and when I got a real pocketed cloak I damn near shit myself. That was kinda a big deal then.

Thanks for confirming that, I was beginning to think my recollection was off.
