This is an interaction I had with someone in the landing this evening. It's a good example of how scripting hurts the game, imo. You'll even see at least one guy come scripting in and out of there and the annoying screen roll in the middle of our interaction if you're bored enough to actually read this. Kudos to Truje. I was unexpectedly amused. :) And lol Katiesa.

[Locksmith, Backroom]
The backroom of the locksmith's shop is stark, and lit by a single tallow candle. A blob of wax secures the candle atop a locked case that provides the only seating in the uncomfortable room. A tall cabinet secured with a sturdy padlock occupies the far wall. You also see a dimly-lit doorway, Larton, a battered casket and a wax-stained counter with some stuff on it.

Truje put a plain iron trunk in his golden yellow pack.

Larton accepts your silvers.

I don't even know who you're complaining about in that log. A few people ran in, had boxes opened, and then left. None cause any sort of excessive screen scroll.

Are people expected to stop in any room they see other people in and be like, "I say, tis a lovely night tonight. How fare you, kind sir?"?

Besides, GS would be dead by now if it weren't for Lich.

Okay, guys, stay with me. I'll try and break it down for you. Concentrate. Ready? It's not about how much he did. It's about how quickly he did it. One moment you're reading the other person's dialogue and the next you're staring at a wall of text due to someone blatantly ooc "the flash"ing through actions. It's annoying. That's why it's annoying.

Nobody pulls the HULLO card anymore, because of ASSHATS who refuse to answer people, because they think high levels make them better than peons.

When I was level 12 back when I was a teenager, I greeted EVERYONE. And 'titled' folks snubbed noses at youngins like me. Not just me, but everyone untitled. It's a stigma that's stuck through the years. There's a reason people don't actively interact with complete strangers usually.

First he wants to regulate how a parent may discipline their child and now Wrathbringer would like to regulate the number of commands you can enter per minute in a video game.

But for real, I agree with him. Script spam is annoying and detracts from the game.

And Methais is right that tons of folks would quit GS (and have fewer accounts) if they have to manually enter commands. The GS population is not the least lazy group of people ever.

Of course not. I've got a script that "roleplays all over the joint" with them before selling my loot, running me in and out of that room 32523 times, sorting my gems into jars and then taking me to rest at a table and scream obscenities at script checks.

Haldrik

This was not the thread I was expecting. Wraith, set up a trigger to tell everyone about the "EMPTY" verb. That should help reduce scroll quite a bit.

Also, people going fast don't lose out on any interactions. Because they didn't want to interact. Doing it manually or not doesn't make someone want to interact or give a fuck about you.

Let's think about this from an RP or IC perspective:

My character wants to make a shit load of money and buy some leet gear so he stops getting pwned and having to spend more money on death potions. My character also knows how shitty boxes are and really hates going to the locksmith to get raped for half his silver. So he already hates going to the locksmith. Why in the FUCK would he want to stick around and bullshit with a random person about random shit, IN THE LOCKSMITH ROOM. WHERE ITS BUSY AS FUCK.

Go fucking talk in the garden niche. No interactions missed because of Lich. Interactions missed because no want to talk in the locksmith room.

Also, if you are RPING like a boss, why the fuck are you using the NPC locksmith. You might as well title this thread "WHY NPC LOCKSMITH RUINED GEMSTONE." Easy to blame it on lich then to blame Simu for making stupid fucking decisions.

NPC LOCKSMITH > LICH

This is an interaction I had with someone in the landing this evening. It's a good example of how scripting hurts the game, imo.

This is like one time when I went into a store. I went in and there was somebody else in the store, so I said hi because I'm polite and shit. THEN! Then some fucking cunt comes in the store and walks RIGHT BY ME, didn't say a word to me, almost like I was standing in a store and he was there to buy something and not talk to me. The arrogance. So he walks right by me, goes up to the counter, and buys something. Now, this is the really fucked up part here. After he bought something in the store I was standing in, he left. HE JUST LEFT, again without talking to me! I mean, what the fucking fuck!

A friend just randomly sent me a log of him being spammed. This seemed like an appropriate place to leave it. Or has WB already been shamed out of the thread?

Kthx

Now THAT is some annoying spam.

It amuses me because he generally announces on LNET that he is going to spam alchemy so others feel his pain.

What does WB think of Simu mechanics which force countless spamming lines and essentially destroy all possible interaction? DOWN WITH LICH! I MEAN... SIMU, WAIT NO... EVERYTHING IS LICHES FAULT.

No, I just have a life and turn in at a decent hour.

Get over yourself. No one has to interact with you because you want them to.

No, but if they don't I'll post about it and blame lich.

Complaints about lack of interaction. Uses NPC locksmith.

Actual attentive players still play rogues?

Do pickers hang out in a specific place anymore? The last time I was on the east tower was completely empty, you'd have to ask around for one on the amun- ahaha nobody uses that anymore either.

The only way to find a rogue is to ask an ma'er to log theirs in. :(

Truge says quietly, "He kept asking me if I wanted to see his polearm."

Lol

Video killed the radio star.

I am, as usual, drunk.... Saw the thread title again... Thought of that.

Am I the only one that used kill rat?

Let me tell you a funny something from back in the old days! (Begins to spin a yarn)

My first character in Gemstone was named Rathorn.

Yes, killed at least twice on accident at level 1-2 in rats.

Ever since then I tried to be VERY careful about what I named my characters!

Just to add my two cents here, personally I would likely not be playing GS without Lich. As we get older we find ourselves less able to keep up with the pace of typing with the speed required in most situations in GS, not to mention the repetitive nature of most of the commands. Lich makes it far easier to accomplish things that are trivial or repetitive and I am eternally grateful for it. I don't script hunt (unless its in Shattered) and I try to be respectful of folks but limiting any excessive spam actions to a private table. Lich helps me get from point A to point B without having to rely on maps. I've been to Icemule hundreds of times over the years, but I still couldn't get there without a map or ;go2 probably. There are times I'll forget which herb is for head scars and which is for major limb scars, so ;useherbs makes that part so much simpler for me. I think ;sloot is a godsend as well, as typing out the commands for each search and pickup of treasure adds a ton of additional work. These are just a few of the many reasons that Lich has helped make the game more enjoyable for me and far less tedious.

The true statement to this thread shouldn't be How Lich Ruined Gemstone. If anything Lich saved Gemstone. I'd wager that if Lich suddenly stopped working tomorrow and there was no replacement, forcing players to manually type out every single command, the population would drop by at least 25% if not more. How many of you would honestly stay if that were a reality? A few perhaps, but many would be gone.

And keep in mind, there were scripts LONG before there was Lich.

Bad players ruin Gemstone, not software.

I have at least 50 rep comments related to bowel movements of the solid, liquid and gas variety. I'd like my title changed to Flatuance Victim.

Lich didn't "ruin" GS but it created a centralized platform for scripting. That increased the frequency of their use dramatically and also, I believe, brought more people in our community into the fold of wannabe coders. Which is cool.

Before growing pains I was hunting Sheru in the monastery. There was a room or two up there that you could just camp in and they would swarm the shit out of you. You never had to move. I think that spoiled me in Gemstone far earlier than lich did.

After I leveled out of there, what basically saved me was wander. I had played for about a year in just camping that one room in Sheru and was just annoyed and walking around looking for creatures to fight. Then I was further spoiled with warcamps before the more recent changes.

;go2, ;wander, ;waggle, and ;voodoo are probably the scripts that "saved" GS for me.

Before Lich there was PSInet, and before PSInet there were complicated scripts that could be executed via the normal scripting engine. If such programs were to go away, I imagine people would go back to using the more simplistic forms of scripts as much as they could, as many did for years and years prior to the advent of these programs. A lot of people would probably quit too, because said scripts suck in comparison, but it is still better than typing out every single action in the game.

The argument that people spending all their time on Lnet as opposed to interacting/roleplaying is another tricky one. People went AFK and/or were completely unresponsive to their environment prior to Lnet and PSInet. At least now there are still actively engaged with another segment of the population, albeit not in character. I don't think the people that use Lnet would be roleplaying if Lnet wasn't around, I think they would be quitting out of boredom and isolation.

Heh. I was playing a mandolin with my Bard and got 'talked to' by a GM about it. All the time we were talking, a fountain in the room kept making messages and scrolling the screen, along with someone's armor which Simu created... I kept glancing at it until finally making a reference. It was considered 'ambiance.' I said, "so is my music."

What got changed with warcamps?

I miss the old Sheru monastery, those swarms were awesome. You actually felt like you were in a battle with some serious shit instead of just running around looking for random stuff to one shot. And if a harbinger showed up in the mix, shit was about to get real.

They should convert that whole Broken Lands/Sheru Monastery area into a capped hunting area. The theme of the place fits perfectly, and as far as I know almost nobody ever hunts there anymore and the place is basically being completely wasted.

The new shield mans and cmans or whatever are ridiculous now. At least for me since I don't have your awesome one shot POWAH.

If they turned the Monastery into the new capped ground I would re-activate in a heart beat to check it out. You would have the one room to rest in sort of like "the sands" and its far enough yet close enough to the landing.

A little off-topic, but - pro tip! You can just type PAY and it'll give him the amount he asked for. Of course doing that completely ruins your IC experience, so maybe that's why you didn't do it.

They really talked to you about using an instrument? It truly amazes me how text being generated in a text game is disruptive and leads to GMs messing with people, especially in light of all the bullshit items they've made over the years that do nothing but add more dreaded lines of text to the game. Makes me wonder how people are supposed to even interact without someone else being disrupted by all the horrid text on the screen that is irrelevant to whatever that other person is doing.

His post is unclear what the GM talked to him about - he was using a bard to play an instrument. It could have been an afk script check rather than disruptive scroll. As learning those ranks grant him a mechanical advantage I see no comparison between mood ambients and the fountain going off and the playing.

As he was talking back to the GM, if it was an afk script check he seems to have passed it fine and no harm no foul.

For the whole story... Yes, got caught script hunting with him long ago. Then was resting and playing for fun. Yes, the script hunting bust was legit and I owned up to it - had definitely stepped away from the keyboard/screen. But, the peg for playing the instrument, I argued, was not legit. I was already mastered in that form of instrument so playing more was giving me no advantage anymore. The GM hit me with an XP penalty for hunting (legit and no argument) but also took away a ton of my string instrument points. Argued my point and did get them back luckily. I reported that the scripting violation was legit on the hunting part but taking away play points when there is no gain otherwise was malicious. We had a good talk though and ironed it out. Glad the GM was nice that day.

Unless you also used the instrument during the earlier hunt? It would have a nice psuedo lore skill bonus bonus to your songs?

I was playing off in a place rarely visited by anyone. Wasn't at TSC or NM, or the dais or anything like that. I even asked the one other person who was there occasionally if it were alright that I played. I just liked the messaging cause I have played the guitar in the past (horribly), so I felt it took a bit of time to write out the script so detailed for it. And when you get to a high enough level, there's some interesting lines that come out. That's all. Wasn't bothering anyone aside from taking away from their 'ambient' room messages - which I thought were nice too.

GM ports down while I'm at a table unloading loot from the invasion critters.
Me: Yeah? Someone lose their weapon? I didn't pick anything weird up.
GM: No, I'm here because you cursed on the amulet. Said fuck multiple times, by my record. That constitutes a warning.
Me: No, actually I didn't.
GM: Yes, you did. I have the command log here in front of me.
Me: Oh? Then you'll know that my amulet wasn't activated, and it didn't go through. Yes, I entered the command. No, it didn't go through into the game in any way.
GM: I can't see that.
Me: I didn't say it ingame.
GM: You put the command in.
Me: OKAY! PAY ATTENTION! I KNOW I PUT THE COMMAND IN! BUT IT NEVER.... GOT..... TRANSMITTED!
Me: Doesn't your log show I didn't have my amulet activated?
GM: It doesn't show one way or the other.
Me: So you expect to enforce something when you don't even have half the story? Seriously?
Me: I miscommunicated something because I glanced at my inventory screen, got mixed up, and hit THINK instead of CHAT. It happened, sure, but since my amulet wasn't activated, you've got no leg to stand on with this, since it didn't go through to the game.
GM: Watch your language in the future.
Me: Considering I've never gotten a warning for language, and it won't start now since I DID NOT curse in the game, I'd say that advice is not warranted.
GM ports out immediately after I said that, less than one second later. Assuming he thought he got the last word.
Me at a table, clearly nobody around, defrying from the invasion, nothing to do for the next 20 minutes: Well that was just horseshit in a handbasket.
Grandma soap bitch walks into the table and soaps me for 5 minutes. I'm laughing my ass off in real life now since the soap chick doesn't come to tables, and the GM's pissed at me.

I go and make myself a burrito. Come back, go hunt, laugh all the while. Fuckin asshat GM's.
