View Full Version : Questions From the Newbie

I'm sure this will be part 1 of many.

So, I'm wondering a few things!

1. Where can I find something to write on in GSIV? Paper, etc?
2. How can I change the color of the pack I started with?
3. Many people use Lich, but is there a Real Human's guide to it? Until a couple people gave me specific things to enter into it, I couldn't even figure out how to make the maps appear.

I'd like to thank everyone who has been so kind to me both in Ta'Vaalor where I started, and in the Landing. I will figure it all out, I promise.

And as soon as I can figure out the questions to ask, I'll be back with some others!

I know there's a rainbow tent in the Landing that can change the color of your items, I'm pretty sure there is one in EN too. No idea where exactly.

I'm not aware of any sort of guide to use Lich; mostly you just have to ask specific questions or use the lich help.

Things you can write on are pretty specific items...I know of some chalkboards, some ledgers, some books...but they're not generally released items you can just go pick up somewhere. You might want to post a "looking for" thread in the market here and see what comes up.

Tg covered the rest. There is some basic information on the Lich website you downloaded it from, but for the most part you're going to want to just get in it and ask specific questions either here or on Lnet in-game.

The rainbow tent looks like a ruin on the inside. Alas. I don't think it's doing any business.

Is this just a bad time to start GS or what? :(

the rainbow tent is open, I used it the other day. you have to go down a tunnel I think.

http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Category:New_Player

check out those links. I don't think there's a step by step guide to Lich but http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?81229-What-Lich-Scripts-Do-You-Regularly-Use is an excellent thread

For writing, the Wax Eloquent shop on Stearriza Var in Ta'Illistim sells paper and parchment, as well as quills.

[Wax Eloquent, Correspondence]
The front wall of the small square chamber is taken up by a narrow door and a single tracery window, which is paned in pale blue stained glass. A matching silken rug covers the stone floor. The counter that runs the length of the room is topped with a slab of labradorite, though a copious amount of dried wax covers its surface. You also see Polimynia.
Obvious exits: none

>order 2
You ask about the price of a piece of ivory parchment.

Putting on your best poker face, you begin haggling with Polimynia about an appropriate price. She must play poker, too, for at the end of your bargaining it's hard to tell whether she likes the settled price of 250 silvers.
Polimynia says, "Since you're a citizen of this town, I'll drop the price to 237."

You may order a QUANTITY of this item, ORDER something else, or BUY this item.
>buy

Polimynia exclaims, "Sold for 237 silvers!"
Polimynia takes the 237 silvers you offer in payment.
She hands you a piece of ivory parchment and says, "Here's your purchase. Thanks for your patronage."
>glance
You glance down to see a thin white raven feather quill in your right hand and a piece of ivory parchment in your left hand.
>speak elven
You are now speaking Elven.
>
>write ivory parchment; Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet
The parchment before you fills with Elven, as ink flows smoothly from your quill. You regard the parchment, and your words, critically.
>read my parchment
The page, written in Elven, reads as follows:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet

Thank you! Someone in GS tonight patiently took me to the tunnel under the dyer's tent and (all in-character, I might add) got me getting it all worked out. It was awesome.

Thanks everyone!

And I will try to figure out this Ta'Illistim. maybe next week. :)

Can you write linebreaks on the paper, or is it all in paragraph form?

~L.

Silvean

Here's an excerpt from a conversation I had on the officials explaining line breaks:

>Whilst you cannot correct or re-use the stationery once written on, you can use | for line breaks.

The vertical bar character you get with a shift-backslash? How 'bout that:

You remove a silver-tipped raven feather quill from in your writing case.
>get parch from case
You remove a piece of ivory parchment from in your writing case.
>write on parchment;This is a test of penmanship.|Behold.||Behold, Behold.
The parchment before you fills with Common, as ink flows smoothly from your quill. You regard the parchment, and your words, critically.
>read parch
The page, written in Common, reads as follows:

This is a test of penmanship.
Behold.

Behold, Behold.

Here's a PC post explaining verbs for writing and signet rings:

And from Periope, the merchant who sold the signets at EG, comes the following demonstration.

Periope says, “You’ll first want to write your note.”

Periope removes a piece of white paper from in her linen shift.

Periope removes a plumed quill from in her linen shift.

Periope focuses all of her attention on her paper, writing carefully with her quill. Satisfied, she considers what she’s written.

Periope says, “Then, when you’re satisfied, close the note shut.”

Periope folds shut her paper.

Periope put a plumed quill in her linen shift.

Periope removes a leaden grey wax stick from in her linen shift.

Periope says, “Heat the wax between your hands.”

Periope says, “But you’ll need both hands, to get a good friction.”

Periope drops a piece of white paper.

Periope warms a leaden grey wax stick between her hands.

Periope picks up a piece of white paper.

Pressing her stick to her paper, leaves a blister of leaden grey wax, ripe for sealing.

Periope says, “Push the stick, against the paper.”

Periope says, “That will put the wax on it.”

Periope put a leaden grey wax stick in her linen shift.

Periope removes a thumb signet from in her linen shift.

Periope says, “The push the signet, against the paper.”

Pressing her signet to her paper, her makes a lion rampant impression in the leaden grey wax.

Periope says, “That will stamp your seal into the wax dollop.”

Periope opens her paper, scanning its contents.

Periope says, “And if the message is to remain a secret...”

Periope rips and shreds her paper. The paper is soon merely a pile of confetti.

Periope throws a handful of confetti up into the air, and it floats down in a cloud all over the area!

~L.Your gain training points based on your stats, so if you have higher physical stats (str, con, etc.) than mental (wis, int, etc.) then you'll get more PTP than MTP. You also get double weighting on your profession's prime stats, so if you are for example a warrior with high str and con you'll see an even bigger disparity. This usually works in your favor.

I am using Krakiipedia to come up to speed on the volumes and volumes of lore (oh my gosh, there is SO much to learn!) along with what is at the GemStone web site itself.

I notice that Krakiipedia phrases all the articles about the pantheon(s?) in the past tense. IE:

http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Ronan

Are these gods/goddesses of the realms no longer active and were replaced by some others? If so ... a heads up to what happened, and who the new folk are would be appreciated. If not ... why are they in the past tense?

~L.

Taernath

No gods have died as far as I know. Some people just really enjoy writing wiki articles in the past tense for some reason.

Huntress died. Long live Arachne!

The website and Krakii don't make any reference to her death. She was stabbed in a lore story about the creation of Arachne, but I think that's it.

(also lol @ me assuming the website is current)

the people who set up the 'pedia decided that talking about everything in past tense was the correct way to go. I don't exactly do that with my pages but i'm not going to go back and change them all. you can see many of the towns pages are like that, too

In terms of magic development, I call them the arcane masters.

The only other sort of IC GM is the CHE House Controller, so I call them the House Controller.

Otherwise "powers that be" works.

Now we just refer to them in game as "Wyrom and a bunch of faggots".

That's what I heard anyway.

Luxelle, I just noticed early on in this thread you asked if any of the arkati have died and I'm not sure if you ever got an answer.... sorry for reaching back like 2 months.. There were likely plenty of arkati casualties during the Ur-Daemon war, but that was before they were "gods" per se, but were rather servants of the drakes.

More recently, there was a goddess called L'Naere, who was the patron of the Aelotoi race. She was executed by the other Arkati for whisking the progenitors of the race away to another world. No specific deity has taken her place.

Congrats on your speedy progress!

Luxelle

Seomanthe, my original question was more confusion because all of the explanations of the pantheon listed at Krakiipedia are in the past tense. So as I read that, I wondered if there were newer ones now, or what, but couldn't find any.

Someone came along and said they just wrote it that way, and that the names are current. They're just written in the past tense for some reason. But wow, an executed one, that sounds like quite the mess.

Thank you :)
