Just curious how many of the folks on the forums play tabletop RPGs. If you play, which systems?

I used to play a lot of tabletop games: Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, Cthulhu, Vampire: The Masquerade, and Mage: The Ascension. I recently ran a one-shot Cthulhu game for some friends and attended a Pathfinder Society event at a gaming store a few months ago. The Pathfinder Society thing went surprisingly well. I've walked into gaming stores where the stench made my eyes water and it wasn't like that.

I tried D&D for the first time a few years back. It was alright, but the group's DM had a lot of health problems so it ended up falling apart. I can see the appeal if you have a good group of friends, but i'm not so sure it is enough fun to try to organize something with a bunch of strangers. The "eye watering stench" was a bit of an issue even amongst people I knew casually, let alone complete strangers in the back of a comic book store.

Funny you should mention Pathfinder Society. I'm the Venture Captain for Pathfinder Society play in Kentucky. These days I run more games than I get to play in, but I'm able to play in a bi-weekly game on Fridays that gives me a chance to sit at the player's side of the table. I've toyed with the idea for a while of trying to see if there were enough RPG folks on the boards to warrant trying to set up a regular online game using Roll20 or d20 Pro. Kinda testing the waters.

I used to but I haven't had people to play with for a long time now. I've tried to do some online play before but it just never worked out.
I've played D&D, Vampire, and Amber but my favorites are Shadowrun and Mage (in that order.)

Holy shit, someone else who played Amber. I thought I was the only one :)

Amber was great, had a lot of really cool things about it. Conjuration Magic plus Logrus, yes please!
I still have the giant tome that is all of the Amber books in one as well.

I never played it but I owned the core book for Engel and it seemed like a cool game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engel_(role-playing_game)
Same for Ars Magica. I owned a bunch of the Rolemaster books for Gemstone reference back in the day too. Sadly, I never bought the book for the Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai game.

I actually played Rolemaster and that is what led me to GS way back when. A friend said they had made a MUD using the Rolemaster system and I was all over that.
Thanks Kevin, wherever you are. You are the single reason for this addiction! :)

This is my story as well. Rolemaster was a complicated system for table top play, but the d100 system and complicated combat resolution lent itself very well to computer.
I also played a host of other games back in the day, including D&D, Boot Hill, Gamma World, Gangbusters, Traveler and Squad Leader.

Who'd have thought that GS players were a bunch of nerds.

I used to play 3.5 D&D and Shadowrun with a group a few years back, but I wound up moving and never found another to replace it.

played 2nd edition AD&D, the rolemaster rules for lord of the rings (MERP), shadowrun, Cthulu and a few other odds and ends, mos of the people I played with left for college and that was that. Have to say most fun may have been Paranoia though, had a ton of fun with that when we needed a break from more serious stuff

I have a bi-weekly game going out here in Hollywood. We tested 5E. It's a great system.
Sorc 5, Fighter 5, Lock 4, Fighter 6...haven't figured it out from there.
I'm gonna pick up the DMG soon and start running games more than bi-weekly.

Legend of the 5 rings, star wars, D&D, cthulu, spysomething? (cthulu and something else combined), hunter the reckoning, shadowrun, some pirate game...
Hunter was a LOT of fun but it was a lot of getting shit on 24/7.
Legend of the 5 rings was pretty epic.
Shadowrun is straight epic.
I don't play much anymore though.
Any groups in San Francisco?

Iv played DnD ADnD to 3.5, pathfinder, shadowrun (probably my favorite), various superhero ones, various WoD, various 40K. Most recently iv been playing the dresden files RPG, its great fun. I have numeria and I cannot wait to actually play it.
Unfortunately I havent had a steady group for a long while due to people PCSing and such. The last group I ended up quiting since there was a player who was on his 5th character in 12 sessions......
Anyone run any games on Roll20 or something similar?

I should. I just never do. If we do distance we videoconference using more traditional tools.

You might want to head over to Kickstarter, then, because they're rebooting Paranoia. Even got the original designers to help. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1990654819/paranoia-rpg
For myself, I'm lucky enough to have a weekly gaming group meeting every Sunday. We're currently playing base New World of Darkness with some homebrew rules thrown in to add the supernatural, and it's been an insane amount of fun. We've also poked around on different systems like Vampire: the Requiem, Mage: the Awakening (obviously, we like our nWoD), Savage Worlds, FATE Core, Legend of the Five Rings, D&D 3.5, D&D 4, BESM, 4th ed Gamma World, an Attack on Titan system based in FATE, Piledrivers and Powerbombs (pro wrestling!), Teenagers from Outer Space and Maid RPG (don't ask).
Outside of my weekly group, I've also played AD&D, D&D 5e, Werewolf: the Forsaken, Spirit of the Century and a game system that a friend has been developing for over 10 years. There's also a local charity that holds a yearly fundraiser where we get together and hold a slew of one-shots for people to drop in on over a weekend. There I've played Call of Cthulhu, Early Dark, Scion: Hero, Deadlands, Fiasco, Song of Ice and Fire... maybe others, but I can't remember. I blame lack of sleep.
My current favorite systems are FATE and D&D 5e. They both give a decent amount of structure while allowing the story to take center stage. D&D is more crunchy than FATE, but it's not nearly as bad as 3.5 was. I also really enjoy nWoD for the flexibility of the system. But really, almost any system is fun with a good group.

I like my heroic postal worker rigger and my street sam who has to hear a soundtrack at all times or his implants break down.

The closest I've come to tabletop gaming is the board game Heroe Quest :(

Of all the many systems I've played, original Deadlands was by far and away my favorite. Not even close to balanced, but the flavor of the setting and the way game mechanics fit the setting were incredible.
Also, fuck yeah westerns.
I wish more systems had the "Failing Forward" mindset that 13th Age incorporates.

Deadlands and Fading Suns are some of my favorite totally unbalanced systems.

I'd like to take a moment to talk about drones. Strictly for my riggers.

Pathfinder and Shadowrun were absolutely the favorites of our group, but it's not all that easy to find a group for either in this town.

I never did get into play with a rigger but they have some fun potential.
My favorite is a sneak-thief mage focused on illusion and manipulation magic.

So...update.
I've actually become pretty active in the Adventure League community as far as conventions go and it's rather surprising who's coming out to play organized D&D 5e. People you'd never think by the look of them. The game isn't perfect but WotC seems pretty damn adamant about making it as good as they can, making it simple for incoming players, and the class balance. I'm very happy with it.
Anyone else try out ADVL?

I've been to Pathfinder Society a few times and the games brought in a diverse group. I would probably try it again but I've been running a Mage: The Ascension (Technocracy) game since July for some of my friends. Some of those guys have a different roleplaying game going for every night of the week but I don't have the time or the desire to saturate myself like that. Running a game from scratch like I'm doing with Mage is enormously time consuming. It's a lot like trying to prepare a class session when I'm teaching -- ton of fucking work.
