Generally, the lower your level, the easier getting a rescue is.
The places that are the worst to get rescues are places in isolated towns at the top of their level ranges, because there aren't many qualified people to perform the rescue. Like the Marsh Keep and Citadel in River's Rest. But being say, lower 70s hunting in, I dunno, the Krag Slopes, getting a rescue is pretty easy. What's this 80+ cut off? Are rescues in the Bowels and Rift really that easy? I never thought so!

They were always fairly easy for me... What makes the RR ones harder is that you have to have water walking to drag to town from those areas. Bowels were super easy. Just run in, grab corpse, leave. Minotaur maze rescues used to suck though, find bodies and all.

This..makes no sense. I likely spent more on Death Sting potions when capped than 99% of the game's population. It's more of an issue in hunting areas with corpse looting and a lack of rescues, which occurs at later levels more than earlier ones.
But at the same time, Yeah! Fuck those snooty, snotty fucks. Fuck them right in the ear.

Marsh Keep needs 112 to drag across Maelstrom Bay. Normally people would call this a "fogging area" though I've since solved the Miasmal Mazes so dragging around the trunk isn't quite as insane as it once was.
The Citadel, however, has many exits, and is a strictly easy dragging location. If you don't get sheer feared to fuck because you're not a Citadel hunter...
Always appreciate the replies about RR though!
Speaking of rescues that suck, how about the Jungle? It can be fogged to so, for some not too bad. Miasmal Mazes are pretty awful. And the worst of Miasmal is bog trolls that bury your corpse from location. Like, seriously. Nasty.

I see what he is saying now. He is saying it is harder to level up if you're constantly getting reduced EXP absorption due to Death's Sting, something older characters didn't have to deal with when they were leveling up. If they get DS now, they're already high level so it doesn't slow them down as much in progressing through the game.
Not saying I agree with the sentiment, but I at least understand what he's saying.
Roblar
10-07-2014, 05:26 PM
Except, he's incorrect anyway.
GSIII had flat (I think 50K exp needed towards next level) penalties for depart (decay too?). Also Death Sting now has four ways around it (if you include chrisms for CON loss).

This is not really fair. Death sting was introduced in 2005. You need to go back and see what death was like PRE 2005. At one point decay/depart would make you drop all your items. That is pretty bad too.
Also, how high were levels in 2005 anyway?

I remember the totals went from upper 500's to maybe slightly above 700, with the higher numbers being exponentially more difficult to get. It was trying to crack 700 that took so much time. I think 650 was considered solid, and my ranger had roughly 670. Nowdays everyone starts with 640, but I think it's a better system because even if you lose out on total numbers it's a LOT easier to place for growth. No more 5 90's and 5 30's.
And yeah, when they pushed through those changes you had to reallocate. People who had the best rolls were raging.

Amen to this. Can you imagine trying to place stats for growth at level 1? Or try to hunt as a pure from level 1.

I could go on and on with the "way back when" stories, but I can second the pain of hunting as a pure at level 1. Before you had the benefit of retraining, ever. You didn't take spells for granted from the wizards who went through that pain. I recall buying disks with fresh wands and paying 1000 silver for an Ebladed falchion from figures back when that was the end all be all of hunting areas.

Mana Leech didn't even exist yet.
Mana leech did rule for a while though when it had no cool down and you could leech forever if you had the CS for it, which was mostly only useful against things too low to hunt for exp since you needed a high endroll to be worth it, since it still cost 16 mana no matter what, with none of this only costing 1 mana on a successful warding shit.

In all my years I've never found a boxfound item worth mentioning. I must be cursed with the unlucky or something.
My most cherished item came from an HSN auction way back in like 1994 or 1995. I was the only rogue in the tent for my level range and won "a lockpick case". Inside the case were four picks, all with unique looks. One of the picks which was something like "an emerald handled gold lockpick" was determined to have been the highest rated known pick in the game after Sagan and I tested it on tons of boxes. I broke it several months later. Back then when a pick was broke it vanished. I was crushed.

That...is extremely disheartening. There should be a system and a GM who tracks that. Not sure how they're systems work, but would be nice if SIMU had a way to flag an account that hadn't found a random keep-worthy item in a box in X amount of years and they were then able to trigger an event that would put such an item in the next box you found. I would imagine if someone come code that, it wouldn't take much time or effort as the system would just be on autopilot to monitor the account activity and create a report every week of any accounts that had reached that X years mark without a really nice boxfind. Of course you'd have to code the really nice boxfound items to then somehow be linked to the history of the account in some way.

While a purely awesome idea, and probably very easy to implement, I highly doubt it would ever be approved. They are taking steps forward this year by monitoring how many services an account gets, but I think this one will happen about the time Savants hit the table, which is to say...never.
Of course, I'm one of the bitter folks with no boxfounds, so I could be biased. :)

Would you folks consider Enhancives as boxfounds? I forget what year they were introduced, but I think there was a ton of them dropping soon after the release.
I still remember this beauty from 2009, the first words out of Stunseed's mouth were "son of a bitch":
a gleaming vultite greathelm
weight 3 lb.
The magical harmonics reveal that the head and neck are better protected when wearing the vultite greathelm.
The greathelm resonates with your voice, indicating that it enhances its owner in the following ways:
It provides a bonus of 3 to Elemental Lore - Earth Ranks.
This enhancement may not be used by adventurers who have not trained 21 times.
It provides a bonus of 5 to Logic Bonus.
This enhancement may not be used by adventurers who have not trained 21 times.
It provides a bonus of 4 to Constitution Bonus.
This enhancement may not be used by adventurers who have not trained 22 times.
It provides a bonus of 3 to Shield Use Ranks.
This enhancement may not be used by adventurers who have not trained 12 times.
The greathelm looks to have a lot of charges remaining.
You sense that the vultite greathelm will persist after its last enhancive charge has been expended.

Hahaha... they've taken some baby steps towards actually listening to their customer base, and while I hope it's a continuing trend I don't really think they're going to 180 their business model after 20+ years regardless of how bad it is.
But I can fix it, hulk smash

I think enhancives like the one you mentioned count as a box found, within the parameters I think we are thinking of here in this thread. But not necessarily like the ones I've found so far: a <insert item name here>: it provides a bonus of 1 to <swimming, CON, hiding, etc.>
I'm not complaining, I'll still take the 10k from the gemshop vs. the 2k they would have normally given me.

Its probably from Simucon 2013 based on the technology they are using today.

Good eye!
That picture was taken at the old King Henry VIII hotel (torn down for an airport runway addition) in St. Louis during the 1999 Simucon.
:D
P.S. I still have that t-shirt. It's one that Simu sold with the GS3 logo on the back, and my wife embroidered the Askip on the front using the same font in the logo. She also added the crossed sword and bolt below the name. Love that gal.

How about all those snooty level 80+ that never had to experience death's sting? Geez..
I didn't expect so much response to this. I really had no specific profound point to posting it. I should say that I'm sorry if it sounded like I was implying that all high level characters are snooty. I've encountered plenty of very friendly and helpful high level characters. The snooty few seem to have a way of making me storm off in a fit though.
I will also concede that death was hard before death's sting. I did play some way back when and I do remember getting my equipment scattered all over the room. Strangely, I have fond memories of that. For some reason, death's sting just seems more annoying to me. Just IMO.

Always have deeds. Using dwarves cut rubies that you can buy is a great way to stock up on them. Stock up on some high grade chrisms as well and get yourself a chrism holder.

It's more a waste to hunt with a high death sting, not to mention more dangerous with the CON loss.

Salve?
Real money item that costs 1$ in simucon store.
It's only worth it when the silver cost equals the real money cost.
And holy shit running around with no deeds when you are obviously prone to dying? That's like wearing no shirt in a gay bar and then complaining when you keep getting gropped by gay men.
There is system mechanics in place to mitigate death sting. Use those.
Step 1) Get deeds
OR
Step 1) No deeds? Get a chrism. Death sting is reduced.
OR
Step 1) Stop fucking departing. I'm going to assume you are departing because you are doing everything else wrong. Departing increases deaths sting.
AND
Step 2) Buy death sting potions. Hunting with 75% exp reduction means you are hunting X times longer then normal. This results in X more chances of dying. And the cycle repeats and only gets worse as your death piles up. If you bought the potions, you would be leveling faster and hopefully moving past your recent deaths because those also increase death sting.

it's two rubs to clear all sting effects. you get 5 or 6 rubs per purchase. Even at the $1.00 cost (most expensive), it's worth it for a vast majority of characters

The magic roll was indeed a 700 but the odds were really bad. In high school I remember having calculated it, and assumed 3 rolls per second, and I think it required like several years in the autoroller on average. (I can really try to make the estimate again if anyone wants, but I'd have to remember all the roll ranges. I had the program on a graphing calculator. The odds are definitely atrocious though and I doubt more than a few people ever got one in the game's history. Not to mention like, are you really going to by-pass a 690+?)
Kaldonis had a 672 which was the best I ever personally saw. I think it took 3 days of rolling to get it. The worst was coming to the computer, seeing a good roll, but your modem having dropped the connection. I know I lost at least one roll like that.
As far as the 30-days, why should I feel snide towards the younger folks? I saw that system and when I make a new character I just abuse the unholy hell out of it. I'm talking, fixskill into buff spells and mana (on ANY class), spell yourself up, fixskill out of them, go hunting. Multiple times per day. I figure, sure it's got this "insane cheating" feeling but, it's how they implemented the system and it's only 30 days.

I had a 678 after 20 minutes of rolling. Then I demoniced at level 14 right after mastering CoL, because fuck deeds. My poor little character, Constan. :(

Rolled the autoroller for 3 weeks straight. Used the enter key glitch to make it go faster, even though it skipped every like eighth roll. Ended up with a 684. Was very happy.

Everytime I'd roll for too long, it'd find a roll while I'd be gone, and then the game would idle out. I was also using a super fast, blazing speed demon 14.4 modem.... Because fuck 28.8, even though they were the popular ones at the time.

How long do the "recent deaths" last?
From Krakiipedia: Recent Deaths are defined as the number of deaths that occurred within the last month or 50,000 experience, whichever comes first.
Personal note: I think "last month" means 30 days.

As far as boxfounds, while I am a bit confused what this thread considers a "boxfound" item, if I understand the definition correctly I have found perhaps half a dozen in my time. But nothing was especially awesome - the best two were probably a 4x vultite shield that added 4 to TD (temporary) and a set of crit padded studded leather. I don't remember the amount of crit padding, but it wasn't high. I still have the shield collecting dust in a locker.

I never had any okay box finds until War camps came out and I soloed them.
The better stuff was still almost always weapons the critter genned with.

Although I rarely do warcamps, that is also my experience. I have found a few 5x weapons, one 6x weapon, and two 2x claids off critters. Too bad none of the weapons above 4x were OHE (which is what I use).
