It honestly looks like a mix of Kingdom Hearts style "action RPG" gameplay and FF12's gambit system. I'm optimistic about the gameplay even if I have misgivings about the world, which calls to mind FF8.

FF needs another game in the Ivalice setting, or something similar to it, IMO.

And Yeah, the FF series has gone downhill ever since they started introducing more and more guns.

I mean think about it.

When it was just 1 guy with a gun in the series, it kicked ass.

Vincent in FF7. Kickass.
Irvine in FF8. Kickass.

Vincent and everyone's mother in FF: Dirge of Cerberus. Terrible. Why? Because FF isn't a FPS. Shaddup!

And then slowly but surely more and more people got guns and shit. Ugh. Stupid.

Lame!

1 was just amazing fun.
2 was an expansion on the dynamic and offered a LOT of gameplay hours for it's time.
5 was great because, for the first time, it offered a lot of gameplay secrets, easter eggs and all that.
6 was hilariously playable because there were so many different ways to play the game, how YOU wanted to play it.
7 was the first game to use polygon technology in the entire game. Plus... Snowboarding game. Mother. Fucking. Snowboarding. Game.
8 Was an amazing story, I thought, and, like 5, it had an insane amount of gameplay secrets while offering a very long storyline.
10. One word. Blitzball.
12. It was just an all around badass game. Plus, yeah, the bounty system ruled.

Something that I miss, literally MISS, from the oldschool FF games is airship exploration.

It just is sad that, in a great game like FFX2, you got an airship, and your entire experience with the world was a jump line from one destination to the next.

Searching for four hours in an airship to kill Doom in FF6 - Yeah. Way better than jump lines.

Oshit. This thread just got real. Okay! ::cracks knuckles:: Here goes, from best to worst! In my humble opinion, of course:

6: Quasi-steampunk; Ninja with a spaghetti Western inspired theme song; motherfucking Setzer; that Opera House scene; huge, endearing cast. What can I say?
9: Just plain endearing story. Vivi <3. The first FF world that felt "lived in" to me. Random airships passing overhead in the sky. Oh, and chocobo Hot & Cold. Most addictive minigame ever.
4: Kain, inspiration for would-be edgelords in all forms of fantasy media. Classic tale of overcoming one's inner darkness. "YOU SPOONY BARD!!"
5: The story is mostly throwaway, but this one's system of job changing made the game. I still play this one every year for RevenantKioku's Child's Play Charity Event
12: Once you get past the shitty Vaan, and realize that the One True Protagonist is Basch, this game becomes all the more enjoyable. Also, as mentioned, the bounties were a wonderful addition. I hope North America is one day graced with the International Zodiac version of this game. Because it is beastly.
Tactics: More underhanded political maneuvers than a season of Game of Thrones. Also the best Tactics Ogre game that isn't called Tactics Ogre. Too bad the "Advance" sequels didn't do it justice.
7: Enjoyable, even if I never quite got the hype at the time. I felt it was a step down from FF6 in most ways. The blocky 3D characters did nothing for me; at the time, I found games like Breath of Fire III with its beautiful pixel art much better looking. I did like the Materia system quite a bit.
10-2: Spice Girls: Final Fantasy. Fun battle system with the dresspheres, but overall "bleh" in terms of plot.
8: Fun to break. (Enemies scale with character level. Get your pay grade up early, break down tents into Curagas, junction to health pool. Win game.) Otherwise not so great, outside of Irvine being a pretty cool character. Oh, and the Triple Triad card game.
13: Incredibly boring all the way up until you get to Gran Pulse, where it opens up a bit. Until that point, all of the internet criticism of it being a game of "push joystick up to run through corridor" is almost entirely valid. I will say that in some of the bigger boss battles, the battle system manages to shine. Random encounters make it a chore, however.
10: Meg Ryan wields a sword, plays underwater soccer, dies at the end.
3: Mm, the NES version is okay, the DS/PSP/PC remake is fairly decent, but overall I'd rather play FF5 and its similar system of changing jobs. Plot is throwaway.
1: Tons of fun as a kid, but like the first Dragon Warrior, just doesn't hold up that well. Remains challenging, though, as long as you're playing the original NES/Famicom version
2: Eh, the idea of a level-free game is novel until you realize you're attacking your own characters more than their enemies because you want to "train" their HP up.

I didn't include the MMOs in the main list, but 11 I played through Chains of Promathia, mostly as a Samurai. I have fond memories of the CoP plot, but the leveling process involved a LOT of WAITING for a party to form. Healers were always in demand, but nobody ever wanted to play them.

I played 14 in 1.0, and it was a terrible game. A Realm Reborn has turned it into one of my all-time favorite MMOs, and I don't see myself getting bored of it any time soon.

I played 8 when it came out and I remember breezing through it. I remember stealing Magic from enemies and it made the game incredibly easy. Fighting the magic creatures like Diablo was fun.

9 was largely forgettable too. Horrible villian.

To me, 6 and 7 were epic adventures with incredibly threatening villians. Not to mention the gameplay, which I enjoyed very much. Both 6 and 7 are very dear to me. 8, 9, and 10 just couldn't match any of that.

10 had a fun bounty system and then 12 expanded on that into something much more. Would like to see a hd version of 12 released someday.

The Gambit system in 12 was amazing to me. I spent tens of hours perfecting a gambit system where I had to do absolutely nothing. Why? So I could teach my then 3 year old son to run around and fight shit. He never even had to click anything. He just ran around and the gambit system did the work. He picked up the loot.

BEST. GAME. EVER!

I did it because he steadfastly wouldn't stop bugging me to play. So I set him up with an unkillable crew so he could act like he was POWing everything. He was happy. =)

I've been enjoying it so far, despite the obvious departure from traditional FF mechanics.

I didn't play 13, so I have no idea to what extent it's an evolution. The last linear FF game I played was 12, and this has a fair amount in common with it from the perspective of combat and exploration, I think.

On a personal level, I'm pleased I can keep the original Japanese dialog and use subtitles. If you're a Fairy Tale fan, Natsu's VA is Prompto.

I haven't gotten a chance to get into it yet. It's funny how it got accused of "being sexist" but my girlfriend won't put it down. I think "Boy Band Final Fantasy" might honestly be a genius move for marketing to women. From what I've seen it looks fun though, which is what matters. I've heard that there are more female players of FF than male players (citation needed), and this might be a move toward to them. As far as it being sexist, the previous games had female party members, leads, and X-2 was all women IIRC.

So, i'm level 55ish at Chapter 3. The game reaaaaallly doesn't force you along in the plot, which I highly appreciate. I have a feeling that once I finally run out of side quests, bounties, and explorable areas, i'll blow through the main storyline at a very fast pace. That being said, I still haven't managed to see all the land they've given me access to, and there are a number of creatures and quests that were outside of my ability that I can circle around to in a few more levels.

I heard a while ago they are 'remaking' the game, and that future patches will add characters, weapons, and fix plot holes. The impression was that this would not be DLC or a Season Pass thing. I'll see if I can find the article.

Even with the plot holes and underwhelming graphics performance (XB) in certain scenes it's overall a good game. As with most games though I've found it to be a bit repetitive after completing it. I'm at 80 hours into the game and now only randomly pull it up to either do a few quests or hunts save and then quit. With that being said I'm still only at 68% completed when it comes to achievements.

The game definitely feels unfinished. The first 7 or 8 Chapters are great, but once you hit Chapter 9 it just turns into a waterslide to the end. Almost no deviation from the main plot, and the areas that are introduced are completely unexplorable. I can definitely smell the incoming DLC (Gladio's journey, World of Ruin, Niflheim, etc). I think it's a bit too optimistic to think that we'll see new content provided for free, however.

For all that, thoroughly enjoyed the game. Beat it at level 46, and it was a challenge, and since then have been having fun with "postgame" content.

Yeah, going from the open world feel to spending the last few hours basically running down corridors fighting single enemies at a time was...underwhelming doesn't quite cover it. I've basically put the game down at this point with the plan to give it about a year and see how much updating and DLC content there is, and once the main planned ones are out, start over with a NG+ and give it another run. Hopefully they will be able to do a lot with it by then.

My impressions:

Story/Plot -- It's like God of War had angry sex with Xenoblade and gave stillbirth to a bad Resident Evil game for the last 4 chapters. I really just have no idea what the fuck happened, why it happened, or why I should care. I didn't have time to appreciate the characters, their motivations, or any of the other aspects of the game that were in theory meant to draw me into the world. The actual story is really very short, and you can probably just straight-run it in like 30-40 hours, with the bulk of that time being eaten up by some really bad conveyance starting around chapter 10.

Gameplay -- This was actually mostly enjoyable, and the most enjoyable part of the game for me. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the live action aspect, having played 12 as my most recently finished FF franchise game previously. I liked the combat system sans waitmode (I never actually tried out waitmode), and I really appreciated how tactical the action could feel at times. When you have the ability to drive around most of Leide and do bounties and explore the area, it's a lot of fun to look for the other Armigers and appreciate the vastness they attempted to achieve. Though, on the flip side, sometimes it's really just as simple as holding circle down. Other times it's just fucking weird, like that fight with Leviathan, where you're not even sure what exactly is going on or how to achieve what you need to achieve.

Sound -- It's a Squenix game, so while I don't really think I need to say much (because this is a department they never leave you wanting), there's a lot of positives here as well. Being able to have soundtrack samples from all the other games while you're driving around or walking with your MP3 player is really good nostaliga. They put effort into the soundtrack for the game itself, and gave us plenty of options to enjoy their compositions from days gone by. Though, I will say I disliked the English voice actors and switched over to original Japanese with subtitles after about an hour of playing.

Overall -- The game was enjoyable to play right up until it wasn't. Fortunately I'd put around 80 hours in by the time I was at chapter 6, and then I just powered through the rest of the game from there because things just got more and more weird with the story and I just kept hoping I'd get some answers (SPOILER -- YOU DON'T). I don't know if that chapter 13 patch I read about was in effect or not, but I sure hope it wasn't, because it was miserable and if that was the improvement, I feel terrible for those who played it pre-patch.

This was the worst Final Fantasy game I've ever played aside from Mystic Quest, and I think that one gets a pass because it was ACTUALLY a Final Fantasy game for first-timers. As far as 'for fans' goes, the music was where they got me. Referencing magitek and making Ardyn out to be like Kefka or some shit really just didn't grab me at all. Having a meteorite like FF7 didn't evoke any feels there. Riding a train like FF8 felt asinine and forced. If they paid fan service to any of their other titles, I missed it. I did name my chocobo Boco for some FF5 nostalgia though.

Don't buy this game. I've never said that about a FF game before (and I've played them all except 13), and it's pretty disappointing to feel it merits the caution. I bought this because I heard it might be the last Final Fantasy franchise game, and frankly if they spend another 10 years making a pile like this one, it might just be.

Don't buy this game.

Well that's just silly. You enjoyed it enough to sink around 80 hours into it before it even got to "the bad part" but people shouldn't buy it? Just what is your standard for a game being worth recommending?

That it be more than Side Quest, the Video Game. I sunk 80 hours into it expecting to get more than I did out of the 'rest' of the game up until that point. When things continued to spiral into madness, I basically bootstrapped myself into finishing the game because I knew if I didn't then I probably never would.

I haven't read Ceyrin's post as I am still avoiding spoilers, but I agree with your stance, Tenlaar. I never came close to beating the game, but I put a massive amount of hours exploring the open world and felt I got my money's worth and more from the game. I think the game will only increase in value as the DLC continues to add options and expansions.

You could wait for the "Complete Version" to drop in 1+ years, but there is more than enough game there to justify a purchase today.

How do I get the Kingly Raiment for Noctis? I keep being told it will unlock during the course of the story but I still haven't come across it and I just exited the train after defeating Leviathan (chapter 10?) but I swear I've seen video of him wearing it from earlier in the story line.

Also, is there a way to make his bros hold still so I'm not constantly tripping over them while exploring?

It's not unlocked until near the very end of the story, but I think it was offered as a pre-order bonus from somewhere or as part of one of the special editions maybe.

You get it further on but you can use Umbra to travel back in time.

I noticed that. Does that mean I can do quests and other things when I use him to travel back? Or is it a linear kinda thing?

You can do side quests that you didn't complete but can't re-do story quests. And yeah, the lack of outfits was kind of a bummer for me playing it. I figured you would at least pick up two or three outfits focusing on different attributes through the game.

Chapter 14.

It's because of Umbra, the magical time travelling dog. I would've liked it more if he was the power source of some temporal dirigible.

Let them die and don't phoenix down them?

Serious question, as I've been out of the console market for years until I recently got a PS4, but was it really too much of an expectation for a complete Final Fantasy game for $60 at the outset?

That's a loaded question. How many hours of entertainment did you receive from the game? Was that amount of entertainment worth the $60 dollars to you? It sounds like you believe not, despite playing for quite some time. Lots of games are far shorter experiences that cost just as much.

I understand not liking a game because of it's ending. Mass Effect 3 immediately comes to mind. That being said, I got 50+ hours out of the campaign and untold hours out of the multiplayer. Was it worth the money? Yes. Was it too much of an expectation for the ending to the series to live up to my standards?

I think one game separate a game living up to one's standards completely and whether a game was worth the money for the amount of entertainment provided.

It wasn't intended to be a loaded question, honestly. My inquiry was about the completeness of the game, not whether I enjoyed what I DID pay for. I did enjoy many hours of the game, and I will likely try out finishing the side quests (I want that murk grouper).

One thing I didn't mention that also soured the experience for me is at some point about 65 hours in my save files all deleted themselves. Fortunately this was while I was still playing and so I could save again and not lose EVERYTHING. I did lose about 110 of Prompto's pictures, and that was kinda annoying since they have relevance to the gameplay (at the end) and the overall experience.

I've had fun with it so far. Currently on Chapter 8. It's not my favorite game in the series, but I do think it's the best single player FF in a long time in terms of actual gameplay.

Combat's pretty good. The storytelling mechanism is... well different people will say different things about it. I got it, but I don't know if I can say if I -liked- it.

Those boys though.

THOSE BOYS.

The camaraderie is very believable and is pretty fantastic. I really liked how the band grew and matured over the course of the game. And there is one scene ... I think it's during the credits or right before it ... it's wonderful.

I really don't want to buy a 1080ti with the next volta card due out likely sometime between April - June. That means i'll be waiting to play until I get the new card as I really want to experience it at 4k 60 FPS. I can't do HDR because I was dumb and didn't notice the high latency on my new TV for HDR.
