Obama is sending 3,000 troops to West Africa to stop the deadly outbreak. But 250,000 people could already be infected by Christmas.

What are troops going to do to help combat a virus? Guns don't work on a virus, Obama!

Aide work, passing out food, the number likely includes Corps men and doctors, and likely a Hospital ship parked off the coast.

Also, the woman that wrote 250k by December is nuts. 77-270kish is a hypothetical worst case scenario, by the end of December.

This site has science and graphs. http://www.eurosurveillance.org/viewarticle.aspx?articleid=20894

We could be hit by a solar storm that wipes out all of Africa's population by the end of December too.

Ebola is a bitch ass virus anyways. I wiped out the entire population of the Earth in way less time then Ebola has existed in Plague Inc.

I imagine a number of civil affairs teams will be going as well.

I don't understand this at all. Maybe if he armed them with flame throwers and quarantined the area, this might make sense but... yeah, I don't see that happening.

That number given doesn't seem too incfedulous, given how fast it is spreading. Look at the numbers of deaths per day in Liberia alone. It has gone from 2 deaths a day up to 59 a day, in the span of just a few months. And even when it was 2 a day they were already overwhelmed.

The US Military has done a LOT of humanitarian missions over the years. We used to pretty much only do them, until 2001 when we got side tracked. (A few other smaller things as well.)

Says who? Just you? CA numbers are rising fast, because the military knows their worth is incredibly high.

Because more people have it now. It hasn't really been going up exponentially since it first appeared in Dec 13 though.

I see. I know we helped with Operation Tomodachi but that was entirely different. Also, wasn't a relief hospital looted not to long ago?

We have two massive Hospital ships for a reason. They don't exist for the use off the US.

The military isn't just about war and killing people. Because of the resources at their disposal as well as their outstanding logistics, they make for an incredible humanitarian response.

Unfortunately, I haven't heard much about the work they do. All I hear about is the war and killing people. Glad to be told otherwise.

The tsunami that hit Thailand in 2004 for example. The US Navy was the first in the world to arrive and help, with a carrier group I believe.

The Mercy was there for the Tsunami. The Comfort also helped out Haiti.

It will be notional, just as Pershing never wore all the stars he was entitled to.

Much easier to contain a potential threat to the US and US interests if we already have troops with boots on the ground in a dangerous area, no?

I just want to throw this out there, as it is one of the reasons why this is a serious situation to be mindful of. Every time there is a new infection there is a chance of the virus mutating. I'll have to check the exact number again but since this outbreak the virus has mutated over 500 times. Now the likelihood of it mutating into an airborn virus is very, very, small.. but given how many people are infected and are getting infected, it could happen. It is much better to be proactive and to help these countries get this under control.
