Hannibal, for sure. Best. Show. Ever.

True Detective and The Blacklist are both super-good, from the episodes that I've seen. Gotta love villainous and scheming James Spader, and True Detective has some truly amazing characterization.

What's not good, though? Attempting to watch Criminal Minds from S1E1. Entertaining, but... ouch.

I haven't watched "normal" TV in decades really, but there's actually a ton of legit great shows out now... all available through other means like NetFlix, Hulu, or whateves.

I can't stand mediocre crap TV... but I'm honestly (and pleasantly) surprised at the quality of some of the shows out there now.

I'm pissed Courtney won Master Chef! Somehow at the beginning of the season I had a rotten feeling the "ex-gentleman's-club-dancer" would somehow end up winning. Did you see the show? Not that that justifies my comment, or negates your reaction to my comment, but it's not that far of a stretch to reach that conclusion. Where I felt my comment was more conjecture than fact I do understand your reaction to it. Of course if they actually were and that affected the outcome of the contest then they are both culpable. I might even go further to suggest that the male in that situation would be more at fault for taking advantage and deceiving the audience with a fake contest.

I get that you want to "keep women in their place" but I'm sick of comments like Back's and I will not be bullied into keeping silent. I'll be sure to remember that every friendly woman who appears on a COOKING SHOW is acting like a prostitute.

A woman is a prostitute when she is proposing that you pay her for sex, and she should not be "treated like a prostitute" or assumed to be one at any other time.

I would not have said it if the other girl won mainly because she wasn't an ex-stripper plus I thought she was far more attractive. The winner just had an all around saccharin sweetness about her.

Don't know if you saw my other post but one of the male contestants was accusing of sleeping his way into his lifestyle. No one batted an eyelash over that one.

When you have people you have sex and the roles of the genders. But I agree to automatically assume someone achieved something because they were banging their way to the top is in poor taste.

There were plenty of other friendly women on that same cooking show that nobody accused of being a prostitute.

A woman is a prostitute when she is proposing that you pay her for sex, and she should not be "treated like a prostitute" or assumed to be one at any other time.

This is simply not reality. Back is fully allowed to make any assumptions he wants about anyone. You're the one making this a statement about the entire female population, as opposed to the singular female in question.

yes, I know the plight of men must be referred to every time a woman gets slut shamed. I also believe this is a wrong assumption to make and I think it's wonderful when a man is confident enough to be the lesser earner and/or be the one who stays home and takes care of the kids.

Nor will they. Notice nothing was said about my statement that all men are sluts.

This level of activism is even more blinding than the hate/ignorance it's supposed to combat, as evidenced here by Allereli immediately going Defcon 5 because an evil man makes an accusation that a flirtatious ex-stripper might possibly have done something untoward to win a competition over other less-attractive women.

What happens when the number of men and women who are 'slut shamed' is equal? We'll still have the issue of slut shaming but it won't have anything to do with the gender of said person as you are trying to make it out to be. It is a different problem altogether, but keep banging that drum I guess?

maybe more men should speak up and defend other men.

you haven't seen defcon 5.

the idea is to challenge people to think about what assumptions they make about others and what their words really mean. strippers aren't automatically stupid, hookers, drug addicts or anything else. if a stripper becomes a chef, good for her. while you think these assumptions are "safe," they are really not and reflect a very dark undertone of what society thinks of women.

I watched most of the episode, I skipped the parts in the beginning where Courtney wasn't featured and watched the entire Pressure Challenge. And after watching it I feel even more justified in speaking up. Courtney did well in 2 of 3 of the cakes and Leslie in only 1 of 3. Courtney also did better than Leslie on the cheesecake than Leslie did better than Courtney on the key lime pie. Leslie really fucked up on the salt for sugar issue.

Also, Courtney was not more attractive than the other women, nor did she flirt or act/dress/portray herself in any way unprofessionally or inappropriately.

I got a better idea. Quit giving words more value than they should have and quit worrying about what other people assume.

strippers aren't automatically stupid, hookers, drug addicts or anything else.

They aren't automatically not, either. The fact that they have a significantly higher statistical chance of being these things over your average woman should not be overlooked for the sake of some imaginary self-righteous indignation.

if a stripper becomes a chef, good for her.

I agree completely.

I totally agree. I've thought from the beginning that Courtney was a very talented cook. Back is the one accusing her of something, I've simply been sticking up for his ability to do so, and trying to make you realize how silly your soapboxing is.

Also, Courtney was not more attractive than the other women.

Hey, what can I say? I've got a thing for big-nosed women.

Also, Courtney was not more attractive than the other women, nor did she flirt or act/dress/portray herself in any way unprofessionally or inappropriately.

I completely agree. I turned it on to check her out and was like "whut". I was expecting her to be in a mini skirt and 6 inch heels. She didn't even bend over in front of the judges. Completely unassuming mousey woman. There has been way hotter on the prior seasons and they didn't always win.

That's what I was expecting too when I saw all of this talk of her being a stripper and a slut and that's how she won.

I've never even seen this show but I wanted to see what the fuss was about and... I'm just not seeing it.

I mean I guess she could have been sleeping around with the judges but it's not like she's some sort of gorgeous super model wearing skin tight outfits to win with sex appeal instead of cooking talent.

Defend them against what? Words? Lol.

I got a better idea. Quit giving words more value than they should have and quit worrying about what other people assume.

The power of words, especially the power of naming, is a persistent theme in myth. To name something is a means of control.

"Perhaps your name is Rumpelstiltskin?"
"The devil has told you that! the devil has told you that!" cried the little man, and in his anger he plunged his right foot so deep into the earth that his whole leg went in; and then in rage he pulled at his left leg so hard with both hands that he tore himself in two."

I just thought it was amusing that it was the first article that popped up with that simple search. And if I made it a link from anywhere else it wouldn't be the first article that popped up and not so amusing to me. Searching the TMZ website there doesn't appear to be any articles regarding this matter. Googling "masterchef season 5 favortism" returns 23.9k results, and googling "masterchef season 5" returns 1.14mil results.

What? Women are more picky than men about who they sleep with. Do you disagree?

I think you need to use more words in your posts. How am I to know it's really you posting if you don't write a novella in each post you submit?

Stop confusing me.

I'm sure you couldn't possibly be suggesting that words have no weight?

Ridiculous.

Sound is without mass, therefore without weight. Therefore words have no weight.

Words exist in written form as well.

I'm just flabbergasted that anyone would claim that words are powerless things.

As a reader, I've been moved by words my whole life.

On reflection my comment was pretty insensitive. Good for Courtney if this gets her out of her past situation.

I'm with Jeril on this. I don't give a rats ass one way or the other, as I don't watch these shows, but I read this thread, and immediately googled 'Masterchef season 5 winner BULLSHIT' and got over 800k results. It made me laugh because it's all over the internet that this was a producer's decision and the show was fixed.
