Roundtime: 3 sec.
You attempt to blend with the surroundings, and feel confident that no one has noticed your doing so.

A deranged sentry searches around nervously.
A deranged sentry discovers you in your hiding place!

A deranged sentry swings a pearlescent abalone-hafted halberd at you!
You evade the attack with ease!

1) You're level 16.

2) Animals and Undead are notoriously harder to hide from. Also, certain areas are harder to hide in than others. Also, some things (like those sentries) have natural bonuses to finding people hiding.

To put it in perspective, my rogue is nearing 70, 3x in hiding, and rank 5 smastery, and still gets sniffed out by roltons sometimes. It's just how it works.

If I remember rightly those things are just annoyingly perceptive, some creatures are like that. I'd suggest you avoid them.

Some mobs are insanely perceptive, so that could be your issue. Or, it could be that you're 16 and just don't have enough ranks under your belt. Someone else might have more productive advice, but that's what I would assume to be the issue. At 3x S&H, at least later on in game, you should be good to hide from everything but the more perceptive undead.

^also, what they said.

Awesome. Thanks guys.

Would changing to one of the races with +stealth bonus help at all?

I figured that since I was 3xing at level 16 I would have quite a jump because of hide skill versus ranks. Unless there is perhaps a hiding bonus from level as well?

No, you're just dealing with something that's extremely perceptive. The game is wonky like this...although it makes sense, really. Some things are just impossible (or nearly impossible) to hide from at any level, with any skill, and any race. It's just how the system works. Hiding in the rift is a bitch, hiding in OTF is relatively easy. Hiding from undead is a bitch, hiding from trolls is relatively easy. Etc. etc.

No one does anything well at lvl 16.

When I first moved into the rift, I could NOT hide in front of certain mobs at 2.5x S&H. I was literally spotted 9 out of every 10 attempts to hide. At that same level, I moved up to planes 2 and 3 and had absolutely zero issues. A LOT of it has to do with the perception of what you hunt.

It's a sentry. One presumes it would be well suited for the tasks of guarding, and watching.

As other's said, undead and animals are particularly difficult to hide from. Sometimes you get context clues in the creature's name, like in this case. Sometimes you need to DESCRIBE your target, so you can get a better look at them. This can also provide useful information about the creature or creatures you are hunting.

Sometimes shit just don't make no sense, like Thond said, and a rolton will find you even when you are significantly advantaged over it. Open-ended rolls FTW?

That is because a rolton can smell you from a mile away.

I dont know why you guys are dismissing the abilities of 'the warrior killer'. May you never cross paths with the maw of death at night. . .

desc rolt
This is obviously a prime example of the beast of legend, the fiend of song and tale. Known near and far as an implacable enemy of early settlers, it was this ferocious sheeplike creature that earned the epithet of Warrior-Killer in its sordid past. The rolton is covered with a dirty, matted, disgusting-looking grey pelt that might once have been white and is still abysmally smelly. However, it isn't this trait alone that gives him such a terrifying appearance. As the animal bleats at you, it is then you get a view of the 'maw of death', with its long, curved incisors that gnash and gnaw. The critter has some nasty-looking hooves as well.
