Really interesting article Silvean. I have read through this once but will read again later on. I think it needs two readings to absorb all the information within it.

The sections relating to character background and character world view I found most poignant. I was certainly able to relate this to Bremerial -more so to her than any of my other characters, past or present. She has a keen sense of self, her own back story and is consistent in her passions. Well passion, singular. :D That's the anchor around which everything revolves.

However from my personal experience, there is one thing to guard against. Not letting communications with people outside the game affect your dealings with them inside the game. This is REALLY hard to do. Its not so bad when those communications reinforce friendships. But when a comment made in a forum or some public or even private areana is, shall we say, not what is expected, (and I'm being incredibly euphemistic here) then that can totally screw up your ingame RP.

I've only ever had that happened to me twice in 17 years - which is probably good going really. Once was with my rogue about 13 years ago, and the other with Bremerial herself. Both 'incidents' resulted in a total 180 degree change in my relationship with certain individuals in the game. I didn't create a backstory for the change - which perhaps I should have done for RP sake - and just brushed off comments, as it had nothing to do with 'Bremerial' per se.

Your article draws out what I think is the beauty of this game, and I suppose any RP game. You can be who you want and if you remain true to your character and consistent, then that establishes credibility, which is an important element of role playing.

Incidentally to prove a point, I 'the player' am actually tea total, playing an ale obsessive..... Yeah I know. Shocker!

Ye know, some of the best roleplay has been with characters who have been grumps. Dont ask me why.

Not bad at all. Well written. I liked some of your background questions quite a lot. I would've suggested that people throw in some personal flaws as well as strengths for roundedness and realism.

I agree, fantastic guide that covers the bases quite well. I would suggest expanding the section on attire and perhaps elaborating in regards to clothing/body alterations. Being able to customize the look of your character is a huge part of what makes gemstone and text based RPGs special. If it might get off to too much of a tangent, perhaps a separate article and a provided link would suffice. A quick list of store inventory databases, a blurb about playershops would be helpful there too.

I would also add artisan skills of all sorts, perhaps under the "stats and all that" setting as a way to round out your character.

Good work, Silvean.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to Krakiipedia at work. I'll look at it later, but it would honestly be better to have a fashionista look it over. I know that for many players, starting a new character also means getting to outfit that character, which helps in great part to form that character's identity. I think even for players new to RPing/Gemstone this is an important step for character development.

Is this script out now?

I'm gonna get so many RPAs if so!

I ran a Mentor class a while back about how it's possible to reveal a lot about your character through subtleties in attire etc. If you like, I can see if there's a log available for putting onto krakii?

Definitely. It'd be a good link for that section at the very bottom of the guide, if not in the expanded section on attire itself. Al has been adding embedded links to the guide quite regularly. She can likely get to it far faster than I could.

Conflict makes for more interesting stories. Even the little snippet in Silvean's guide is made so much better by the ranger disapproving of the cook.

Handling conflict in a non-PvP game can be a bit tricky though and might deserve some mention.

Krakii now has a page for "Roleplay or RP" at: http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/RP

My new guide is linked at the bottom of that page. It may be appropriate to link other guides in the same place. It may also be a good idea to update my guide itself with a third appendix dedicated to roleplaying resources.

I sometimes see purely mechanical posts in folders dedicated to roleplaying issues on the official forums. This could be accidental but I think it's a result of players who are both deeply invested in the game and completely unaware of what differentiates roleplaying from "att rat," i.e. what differentiates roleplaying from the host of other possible activities in a roleplaying game. I have read posts on both this forum and the officials expressing similar confusion. Because of this, I wanted to provide some clarification on the topic as quickly as possible; a starting point for people interested in roleplaying in Gemstone. This done, I will take some time to reflect and gather resources before adding new content to the guide.

Thanks for the kind words. Please keep making suggestions for new content and other resources to look at. Building up a central repository for roleplay materials is a good thing. Talking about roleplaying is a good thing; I don't think Gemstone has ever come close to its potential in that regard.

[I was going to include a funny a picture here to prove I don't take this stuff too seriously but I have to run. Please use your imagination.]

Can I just say that when you mentioned Hearthstone Porch, it brought back a whole load of memories for me. 16-17 years ago, that was like the Mecca, the Nirvana,,the Eden of Wehnimers. I was a young snert of a pure picking rogue and I used to watch in awe of people way way too old to be living congregated there. I genuinely remember being too afraid to talk to them. No BS. I remember being in absolute awe of Blades and I hung on his every word! I suspect that was more about me, projecting myself and my own emotions onto my character, but then I was such a green RPer.

Thanks for mentioning Hearthstone. I forgot all the emotions that place used to evoke!!,

I've found the log and cleaned it up but it's long. Should I email it to someone or just go ahead and post it here?

Silvean wrote an excellent new section on character attire/features http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/The_Art_of_Roleplaying_in_GemStone_IV_(guide)#Feat ures_and_Attire

Also the log of the style class is up and link can be found at the bottom of Silvean's guide.
